C A S F O O T B A L LC O L L E G E L E A D E R S 2 0 1 0The benchmark was set in 2008 when the1st XI were crowned CAS Premiers, butincredibly they retained the title and wonagain in 2009. The team wrote themselvesinto Waverley history as the first toachieve back-to-back CAS titles. Atremendous effort, though in somerespects only a dot on the spectrum ofevents that occurred on and off the fieldthis season, such as the Junior Footballcamp, the Independent Cup, the St.Andrews Cup, the football season for allgrades and years, the Football Presentation Night and mostnotably, the Football tour to the UK and France.In the Christmas break over 2008-9, 32students embarked on a football tour toEngland, Scotland and France,experiencing different cultures andplaying 6 matches in 3 action-filledweeks.Starting in London, they journeyed upto Scotland and back, passing Liverpooland Manchester before catching the train to Paris, France.They played against specialist football schools and academieson the trip, as well as visiting famous sites in between. Theyparticipated in a training session hosted by the ManchesterCity Academy, watched several EPL matches and toured bothOld Trafford and Anfield.The football season as a whole was highlysuccessful for all teams, but with the inductionof a new home-and-away season, consistencybecame the key to the CAS competition.Overall, there were far more wins than loses andmany teams were a draw or win away fromfinishing the season undefeated.The 1st XI in 2009, led by Thomas Scarf, had avery successful season, finishing the CAS seasonwith only one loss and retaining their title asCAS Premiers for the second consecutive year.They also won the Rizzo Cup; awarded to the best team in theschool.The team represented the College withpride, putting in the hard yards at everytraining session and evidently seeing it payoff with results. They played well-structured,disciplined football, keeping possession andconstantly attacking - consequently scoringthe most goals within the CAS competition.Congratulations go out to the eight boysfrom the 1st XI who made the CAS representative teams, especiallyMassimo Luongo and Thomas Scarf who also made the CIS team.Furthermore, to Massimo Luongo, who was selected in the NSWteam to play in the National Titles in Perth - being awarded Playerof the Tournament and subsequently being selected in theAustralian Schoolboys team - an outstanding achievement.The following are the College leaders for Term 4, 2009 till thecompletion of Term 3, 2010. The College Captain isTimothy Brydon, the Vice-Captains are Matthew Davies andMichael Millett. The College congratulates all of these youngmen. A ceremony….Prefects Investiture, occurred on Thursday,October 22, the first week back to school in Term 4. They were acredit to Waverley as they proved excellent ambassadors forthe school. It was hailed a great success both on and off thefield by the boys, parents and the College alike.The tour helped maintain the boys' skills in the off-season, aswell as the annual Junior Football Clinic held in the secondweek of school holidays where over 50 boys from Years 5 - 9attended and benefited from the expertise and knowledge ofthe coaches.The 2009 season began with the 1st XI entering the St.Andrews Cup at Oak Hill during the Term 1 holidays,performing incredibly well and losing only one match of the 5played.3 on 3 Crazy Hat Volleyball CompetitionTowards the conclusion of term three this year, students fromyears seven to twelve participated fervently in the annualthree on three crazy hat volleyball competition. This event isone of many held throughout the year as part of the college’sinter-house competition. The Crazy Hat volleyball comprequires students who participate to form a team of three fromtheir designated House, and wear an unorthodox hatthroughout the duration of the competition thus adding tothe revelry and rivalry of the occasion.Throughout the week of fierce competition there was a greatdisplay of talent not only from the student body but also theThe Waverley College Football Supporters Club (WCFSC) are highlyinfluential in their support of Waverley football and hosted thePresentation Dinner, capping off the season with a huge attendanceof over 350 people, including Ex-Socceroo and SBS CommentatorCraig Foster as the special guest. All award winners must becongratulated, as well as the WCFSC on the organisation of such afantastic event.A final thank you to current WCFSC President, Alex Imvriotis andCommittee members Jackie Bock, Ben Hughes and John Cardoto aswell as all other parents in the WCFSC for their involvement andassistance with football at Waverley. The final show downin the senior division, between QuinnHouse and the Math's staff saw anarrow victory to the mighty QuinnHouse. In the junior division Laceywas also up against Quinn, though Lacey was far too good on the day.The nature of this competition and others held throughout the yearis testimony to the fact that immense rivalry and a healthycompetitive spirit exists in the college fraternity. I wish to thank allstudents who have competed so enthusiastically and willinglythroughout the year. The Waverley College Spirit is alive and well.Mr. Dane Inman House Coordinator.6Waverley College Junior School Wakakirri 2009 - Choice not Chance - If you had power would you keep it for yourself or use it to helpothers ?The 2009 Wakakirri item "Choice not chance" was inspired by the Red Cross slogan "The Power of Humanity". It follows the journey ofa young boy who plays 3 levels inside the computer game, "Power". During the first two levels of the game (adventure and fame) hequickly runs out of power as he keeps all of the prizes for himself. Playing the third level, humanity, he decides to share his prizes withother characters instead of keeping them for himself. As a resultof this sharing he generates enough power to finish the game aswell as bringing all of the characters back to life.The idea behind Wakakirri is to tell a story which makes apositive impact on the world. Students are judged on dance,music, sets, props, costumes, storyline, teamwork, behaviour anditem sustainability.96 boys from the Junior School competed at the Hills Centre inAugust. We won the award for the best school in public andgained a gold award for our sets and props. This performanceearned us a place in the Grand final at the Sydney EntertainmentCentre in September where, once again, we won the award forthe best school in public. Grant spoke toyears 9 and 10 to inspire theircreativity and boost their interestin reading.Grant Hyde was born and raised in Maroubra in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.A Bookmaker's son, he attended Waverley College graduating in 1986.After he left school he worked as a Clerk for his father until he wasgraded with the NRL's Eastern Suburbs Roosters. Over the following yearshe worked as a hotel manager, gym instructor, building project managerand a real estate agent all with varying degrees of success.Lords of the Pacific is an epic adventure of love, revenge and war set in thePolynesian islands. It was his interest in human history and his love ofthe Polynesian people that brought him to complete his first novel in 2008.Grant was enthused and inspired by a former English teacher at theCollege, Mr John Roberts, and credits his encouragement as one of thesparks as to the start of his journey as a writer.Old Boy authors and booksThe Wave Rolls OnThe launch of The Wave Rolls On, A history of the Waverley College Old Boys' Union 1908 to 2008 took place afterthe May Procession.The Wave Rolls On was launched by Peter Frost, Paul Robinson and Col Blake in front of 70 Old Boys and theHeadmaster Br Paul Leary. A copy was presented to the Senior College library: a welcomed edition to ourcollection. The Wave Rolls On is an informative read and recommended for all.The Wave Rolls On documents the diverse range of experiences and facets of the College as seen through thegreat array of students to pass through College.A particular chapter on the POW diary of Old Boy Sgt James Lynch is moving.“ S H O U T ”Australian Men ofMark Books donatedto the CollegeThe Men of Mark of Australiapublished as two bound volumesin 1888 have been presented tothe College by the Late Justice ofAppeal Martin Hardie. Martinwas dux at the College in 1923.Martin's contribution to public life was diverse and is to be congratulatedand we thank his family and in particular his widow for the books.These volumes were presented to year 7 and 8 students by Alex Broun arelative of Martin and also an Old Boy. Alex himself is a playwright ofnote, with his emphasis on one act plays with his works being preformedthroughout the world. Alex as well, is a journalist for the AustralianRugby Union.The Men of Mark volumes are rich in Australian history and are onperiodic display in the library foyer. The volumes were issued to markthe centenary of the foundation of the Australian colonies and containbiographies of prominent Australian pre 1888.Waverley College, in partnership with St. Clares'College, Waverley, staged the Musical, "SHOUT"on June 18th, 19th and 20th at the ParadeTheatre, NIDA Campus, Kensington.Over these three days four performances wereconducted. All performances were veryprofessionally done and all involved should bevery proud of themselves, both staff, studentperformers, musicians, backstage, sound andlighting students and staff. The CollegeMaintenance staff did a tremendous job inproducing the stage, that is, the setting up….somesix weeks in the preparation of all thescaffolding…done initially at the College and then transported and re-done over three days at thetheatre. ( All three nights were fully booked out and I know that people who attended reallyenjoyed the performances.)All associated with the musical are to be congratulated. The College was very thrilled that JusticeBarry O'Keefe and his family (some twenty of them) graced us with their presence on theOpening Night. They certainly enjoyed and appreciated the production and the talent of thestudents.Well done to everyone.10The Waverley College athletics team continues to go from strengthto strength. Building on the ever improving results of recent years,the Waverley College athletics team is showing no signs of slowing.The season format saw an intense, competitive and condensed fiveweeks of CAS athletics invitations. Equal to the task, the Waverleyathletes regularly broke personal bests and worked as a true team asthey finished third at this year's CAS championships.The Waverley Athletics Team was well represented under theleadership of team captain, Nicholas Mellick, Vice Captain oftrack, Matthew Horton, and Vice Captain of field, Luke Starr. Thesenior students were instrumental in serving as inspiration to theyounger and less experienced members of the team. Furthermore,the recruited professional coaches and teachers of the collegeoffered their words of wisdom and encouragement in search ofthe elusive CAS title. Acknowledging the importance of everytraining session, attendances were consistently high. The valuesof camaraderie and respect were clearly visible within each of thedifferent events at training. The boys went into CAS withconfidence at the conclusion of the season. The dedication andsteadfast commitment of all coaches and athletes during theseason is to be commended.Congratulations to all boys involved in the track and field squadthis season. From the squad members through to those athleteswho competed in 9 events on C.A.S. day, every member of this175-student team made this a great team with which to beinvolved.
