It was a great day with many and various celebrations. The day commenced with a Eucharistic celebration at Mary Immaculate Church, Waverley at 10.00am. This celebration was celebratedby Fr, Martin Milani (College Chaplain). In attendance at this Mass were the Year 12 students, their parents, grandparents, friends andstaff. The celebration was a most fitting one and one that the students and their parents will cherish and remember. Thanks to allthose who contributed to the success of this farewell liturgy. After this Eucharistic celebration we had a very pleasant light luncheon outside the Performing Arts Centre….thanks to the MothersClub and especially the parents of the current Year 11 students. At approximately 12.30pm, after the whole student body and staff gathered in the Centenary Quadrangle, the Year 12 graduands werepresented individually to their parents, friends and the student body. Each individual Year 12 student was presented to theHeadmaster. A little was said about each of the graduands as they were presented. Both the Headmaster and the College Captainspoke fittingly on the occasion. The Graduating ceremony was a very well conducted one and one that the College's Year 12 studentsof 2008 will surely remember. The College wished them all the success in their coming HSC examinations. In the evening the Year 12 graduands with their partners, their parents and staff enjoyed the formal at the Australian Jockey Club (AJC)Randwick. It was a very pleasant evening according to all accounts. After this occasion, to really finish the night off, the Year 12s andtheir partners were bussed to the Star City wharf where they boarded a boat for a harbour cruise.I believe that the Year 12 students will remember their graduation day with fondness. Everything went very well. Thanks to all thosepeople who had anything to do with the organization and conduct of the various aspects of the day.Below are the names of the recipients of the various Major awards, which were presented at the Graduation assembly.Rupert HigginsOliver NewlingTrent WilsonJustin GreerByron HodgeJack ClancyCarlito CoronelLuke BrbotCharles WakimDaniel FlemingRhys HanrahanMartin KastengrenJulien MalidinJack DowdellDavid MunkDominic RobinsonJohn CousinsPeter FenechYear 12 GraduationYear 12 Award Winners 2009: Prize OrderBr LB Tevlin Memorial Prize for Dux of the CollegeThe M O'Halloran Prize for ChemistryMathematics Extension I2nd in Overall Academic PerformanceBishop Patrick Dougherty Prize for Studies Of Religion IIExtension English IIThe Alice & Mildred Thomas Prize for Extension I EnglishHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceHeadmasters Academic MedallionEqual 3rd in Overall Academic PerformanceThe Barry McDonald Prize for Legal StudiesAncient HistoryHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceEqual 3rd in Overall Academic PerformanceWaverley Council Award for General ProficiencyVisual ArtsThe Abram Landa Prize for Advanced EnglishHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceJJ O'Brien Award for Leadership, Study & InvolvementCollege Vice CaptainHeadmasters Academic MedallionReuben F Scarf AwardMax Coleman Memorial Award for Prefect of the SodalityCollege Vice CaptainThe Ray Aston Memorial Prize for BiologyCaltex All Rounder AwardHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceWJ Corbett Award for Best All Round SportsmanCollege CaptainBr P Oakley Prize for PDHPEHeadmasters Commendation AwardInformation Processes & TechnologySoftware Design & DevelopmentHeadmasters Commendation AwardHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceHeadmasters Commendation AwardHeadmasters Academic MedallionHeadmasters Commendation AwardBr F S Farrell Prize for PhysicsMathematicsEngineering StudiesMusic ExtensionMusic Course IIBishop Geoffrey F Mayne Prize for Studies Of Religion IHeadmasters Academic MedallionSport Lifestyle And RecreationThomas SmithMarcus FinocchiaroNicholas SkladnevZakir SayedMarcus RamirezLane EndicottMark NealeJack WhittenHistoryRafael WillettsGeorge AndrianakosJustin ChadwickHarrison HatfieldNicholas McGannDaniel DuffyNicholas MellickHugo GooldThomas ScarfOliver WyvillJonathonWojciechowskiVarshaa PallaathRichard OngLuke StarrEvan LuiRaymond LiangMatthew HortonKit BakerPrize for Senior SciencePrize for Music Course IPrize for Modern HistoryThe Judge Thomas Prize for Mathematics Extension IIPrize for Mathematics GeneralPrize for Industrial TechnologyPrize for HospitalityThe George & Elizabeth Thomas Prize for ExtensionThe John Mc Cluskey Memorial Prize for GermanPrize for GeographyHeadmasters Academic MedallionPrize for Food TechnologyThe Catherine Smithurst Prize for Standard EnglishThe Br PA Conlon Prize for EconomicsHeadmasters Academic MedallionBr R J Wallace Prize for DramaPrize for ConstructionHeadmasters Academic MedallionCatholic StudiesBusiness StudiesHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceHeadmasters Plaque of Academic ExcellenceHeadmasters Academic MedallionHeadmasters Academic MedallionHeadmasters Academic MedallionHeadmasters Academic MedallionHeadmasters Academic Medallion14 3

On a very pleasant day with an audience of 500parents and friends, over 300 cadets paraded in a very creditabledisplay of drill. Of particular interest during the parade was thetrooping of the flags, followed by the exchange, as the new CadetUnit of 2010 took over care of those flags. The parade wascommanded by SUO Byron Hodge and the RSM Luke Brbot. TheReviewing Officer on this occasion was Br. Leary, Headmaster ofthe College, Patron and Commanding Officer of the Unit. In hisaddress the Reviewing Officer encouraged the cadets to seeleadership as an invitation to stay at a task for as long asnecessary and not to walk away because of difficulties. Both heand the Commander of the Brigade complimented the cadets onthe standard of their drill and their turn out. The finale of theparade was the Passing Out of the graduating cadets who slowmarched from the parade to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne", beforeleaving the parade ground by the main archway at the barracks.Later that night the graduating cadets and their parents gatheredfor the annual Valedictory Mess, held at the Mercure AirportHotel. The highlight of this function was the presentation ofeach CUO and Senior Rank with his Record of Service. This"reference" is a highly prized document as it details all theachievements and skills which the cadet has accumulated overfive years of service. Needless to say these documents are valuedfor employment purposes as they highlight perseverance andloyalty, skills which are still much in demand these days.Waverley CollegeOld Boys' UnionCouncil for 2009/10Patron: Mr R PaxtonChaplain: Fr. After a successful 2008 that marked theCentenary of the Old Boys' Union at Waverley College, the OldBoys moved into their second Centenary in 2009.Our centenary book “The Wave rolls on” was launched on 3 May2009 to coincide with the May Procession and the Old Boys'Union AGM. We were pleased and thankful that Peter Frost(Deputy Headmaster – Senior) launched the book in a smallceremony in the Performing Arts Centre to mark the occasion. The book was in two formats. It was produced on DVD with over5,500 copies sent to every Old Boy on the mailing list. A limitededition of hard copy books were distributed to various libraries, and purchased by interested Old Boys. Our sincere thanks go toJustin Fleming for writing an excellent 100 year history of theOld Boys' Union.Following the book launch, a new committee was elected at theAGM when Paul Robinson stood down as President after a tenyear period. On behalf of the Old Boys I would like to thank Paulfor his tireless work and devotion to the role. We are in the process ofdeveloping a more usable data base that will include a mentoringsegment to assist current Waverley students. The system will alsostreamline the class reunion organising and Old Boy contacts. The committee looks forward to developing a vibrant, active OldBoys Union.Col BlakePresident (Class of 1962)As an Old Boy of Waverley College many of us might recall theMay Procession as a spiritual event, a compulsory event oranother Sunday in May. The May Procession of 2010 celebratesthe Centenary of this event. For some it still is a spiritual event; it remain compulsory still for present day Waverley Collegestudents and is on a Sunday afternoon in May though theevolution of the event makes it more in tune with our time. Both young and old are invited to participate in seeking theintercession of Our Lady the Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ inthe celebration of the hundredth year of the Waverley CollegendMay Procession on Sunday 2 May 2010 in the Quadrangle ofWaverly College Our Lady's Mount 131 Birrell Street Waverley at2pm .Please join us in praying the Rosary on our spiritual journey inChrist on this very special day.We are delighted to soon launch our new online communityfor Waverley College.Waverley Online has been developed to enhance yourrelationship with the College and other Waverley past students.? However more importantly, thefeedback about our College and the resources available to ourstudents and teachers alike was tremendous and it reflects thecommitment the College has shown in building anenvironment that we can continue to be proud of.Waverley College, since 2007 has invested in eight interactivewhiteboards at the Junior School and over 20 for the SeniorSchool, with more to follow. The response has been quiteremarkable. Teachers say the students are more alert and moreinterested in the subject matter as a result of the new resourceand that there is a pronounced sense of willingness in theirapproach to their studies. Teachers too benefit from a moreinteractive exchange with students. The interactive whiteboardsallow for more enhanced graphics and animation with thestudents becoming far more IT savvy as a result.Waverley has been a leader for many years in pushing newtechnology and the interactive whiteboards roll-out is a key partof the IT program. The investment in interactive whiteboardsand the resultant classroom refurbishments to accommodate thenew resource are very positive outcomes.O l d B o y sIn Queens Park Pavilion the College has photos of Old BoyInternational Sportsmen. The College is interested in gathering photos andinformation of Old Boys who have achieved in all walks oflife, with the hope of displaying these photos outside theClasssrooms to provide inspiration to the present students. So, if you know of an Old Boy who has been a highachiever in Art or Music or Academics or Business or in anyother field, you are invited to nominate such a person, andsend Photos & details by E-Mail to the Deputy Principal,Mr A Galletta on tgalletta@waverley.nsw.edu.auOr by post to Mr A Galletta, Waverley College, 131 BirrellSt. WAVERLEY 2024.4 13

This was followedby a physically challengingfixture against St. Augustine's'which prepared the boys wellfor the inaugural CAS homeand away structure. Theseason's successes were basedon the foundation of the workinvested by the RugbySupporters' Committee and the College referee community.St. Edmund's always provides our players and coaches with avaluable opportunity to resolve selection dilemmas and confirmgame strategies. Some of our age - groups faced bigger and moremobile players; yet, they managed to provide a capable anddetermined opposition. Brother Murphy was heard to say that ourboys were courageous in the way they played the ball at thebreakdown and particularly in defence. The Augustine's fixture provided little respite between the St.Edmund's game and the first CAS round against Knox. Intraditional custom, Waverley hosted three schools for the firstfixture of the Second Term. A total of twenty-five games wereplayed throughout the day, culminating in a very physical FirstXV game. The First and Second XV fixtures against Knox Grammar were apositive reflection of how the game should be played. The playerscontested with skill, flair and contained aggression. The presence of the Class of 1959 at the fixture against St.Aloysius was a testament to the enduring quality of theexperiences and friendships made at the College. Although manychanges have been made at the College since the Class of '59graduated, the principles and values held dear to them then arestill manifested today by the students attending the school. Themost significant of these is the tenacious and determinedapproach with which Waverley boys face challenges..Waverley teams displayed good discipline and employed sensibletactics in the wet conditions. Some teams even managed to playbeyond their expectations. One team in particular displayed allthe ingredients necessary for success in a closely contested game:tenacity, consistency and, above all, discipline. In terms of junior age-groupsuccess, four teams producedundefeated seasons: The 15Cteam were presented the KavaShield for the MostConsistent Team Result, whilethe 15B, 15E and 14E teamsall went through theirrespective seasonsundefeated. The successes produced by ourboys were celebrated at thePresentation Dinner where wewere fortunate to hear the wise words of Br. Brian Murphy and AdamFreier's inspirational poem "Blue and Yellow Fever". The success ofthe evening was due to the efforts of Mr Rob Wallace, Mr ScottMonroe, Mrs Kathy Davies, Mrs Judy Michael and Mr & Mrs Hodge.I would also like to acknowledge the parents who consistentlyvolunteered their time to help with the BBQ, canteen, stafflunches and afternoon teas, while juggling their own sons'needs. The example that these parents provided, demonstratesthat the Waverley spirit is not limited exclusively to the studentbody. In the past few years the Firsts have won a premiership andshared two. These results were achieved by "home-grown" talent. An interesting statistic to note is that 12 of the fifteen boys whoplayed in the First XV in 2007 were in the U13As in Year 7.All our boys, teachers and parents should be congratulated fortheir collective contribution to the success of the 2009 RugbySeason.Andrea Folli MIC RUGBYAll WelcomeCard NumberExpiry Date:______________________Card Name:_______________________________Signature:___________________________________________________________________The rugby season has been a constant source of inspiration forsome and a cause of frustration for others. While some teams andplayers have consistently improved and succeeded, others havebeen hampered through injury and inconsistent performances.Yet, our players and coaches persist with the realisation of theirgoals, despite the setbacks experienced during the 2009 season.Phil O’Sullivan (WC’38)PHIL “Mr Cricket” O'Sullivan has been recognised for hiscontribution to the local community with acommemorative plaque at Bronte Park, just a few metresfrom where he stepped off the tram and played his firstgame of cricket 84 years ago. Phil founded junior cricket inWaverley, was president of the Waverley District CricketClub and devised the Australia-China Friendship CricketTour in 1988. He operated the family business, O'Sullivan'sGarage at Bondi Junction, for 67 years before handing overthe reins to his grandson (Phillip WC 1992) three years ago, servicing the College “Bus” and cars for many years, andserved in the Battle for Australia during World War II.He has raised tens of thousands of dollars through serviceto Rotary, Red Cross and other organisations and was thefeature cricket writer for the Wentworth Courier for morethan 30 years, from the 1960s to the 1990s.The plaque is one of six installed so far in WaverleyCouncil's “Recognising Our Community Leaders Walk”from Bondi to Bronte.Ironically, it is through these setbacks that we see true characteremerge. Many of the teams had the disciplined rugby. Theseperformances are indicative of the Waverley spirit that permeatesthrough the College.Waverley boys traditionally produce outstanding performanceswhen it counts most. The Opens' performances from the Fourths, through to the Firsts, displayed the collective desire to finish theseason with strong wins and cement the First's claims to theprestigious CAS title, albeit shared with Knox Grammar. Besidessharing the prestigious Henry Plume Shield, Waverley was alsorepresented by Ryan Marais and Charles Wakim in the NSWSchoolboys First and Second Teams respectively.125

C A S F O O T B A L LC O L L E G E L E A D E R S 2 0 1 0The benchmark was set in 2008 when the1st XI were crowned CAS Premiers, butincredibly they retained the title and wonagain in 2009. The team wrote themselvesinto Waverley history as the first toachieve back-to-back CAS titles. Atremendous effort, though in somerespects only a dot on the spectrum ofevents that occurred on and off the fieldthis season, such as the Junior Footballcamp, the Independent Cup, the St.Andrews Cup, the football season for allgrades and years, the Football Presentation Night and mostnotably, the Football tour to the UK and France. In the Christmas break over 2008-9, 32students embarked on a football tour toEngland, Scotland and France, experiencing different cultures andplaying 6 matches in 3 action-filledweeks.Starting in London, they journeyed upto Scotland and back, passing Liverpooland Manchester before catching the train to Paris, France. They played against specialist football schools and academieson the trip, as well as visiting famous sites in between. Theyparticipated in a training session hosted by the ManchesterCity Academy, watched several EPL matches and toured bothOld Trafford and Anfield. The football season as a whole was highlysuccessful for all teams, but with the inductionof a new home-and-away season, consistencybecame the key to the CAS competition.Overall, there were far more wins than loses andmany teams were a draw or win away fromfinishing the season undefeated. The 1st XI in 2009, led by Thomas Scarf, had avery successful season, finishing the CAS seasonwith only one loss and retaining their title asCAS Premiers for the second consecutive year. They also won the Rizzo Cup; awarded to the best team in theschool. The team represented the College withpride, putting in the hard yards at everytraining session and evidently seeing it payoff with results. They played well-structured,disciplined football, keeping possession andconstantly attacking - consequently scoringthe most goals within the CAS competition.Congratulations go out to the eight boysfrom the 1st XI who made the CAS representative teams, especiallyMassimo Luongo and Thomas Scarf who also made the CIS team.Furthermore, to Massimo Luongo, who was selected in the NSWteam to play in the National Titles in Perth - being awarded Playerof the Tournament and subsequently being selected in theAustralian Schoolboys team - an outstanding achievement. The following are the College leaders for Term 4, 2009 till thecompletion of Term 3, 2010. It was hailed a great success both on and off thefield by the boys, parents and the College alike. The tour helped maintain the boys' skills in the off-season, aswell as the annual Junior Football Clinic held in the secondweek of school holidays where over 50 boys from Years 5 - 9attended and benefited from the expertise and knowledge ofthe coaches. The 2009 season began with the 1st XI entering the St.Andrews Cup at Oak Hill during the Term 1 holidays, performing incredibly well and losing only one match of the 5played.3 on 3 Crazy Hat Volleyball CompetitionTowards the conclusion of term three this year, students fromyears seven to twelve participated fervently in the annualthree on three crazy hat volleyball competition. This event isone of many held throughout the year as part of the college’sinter-house competition. The Crazy Hat volleyball comprequires students who participate to form a team of three fromtheir designated House, and wear an unorthodox hatthroughout the duration of the competition thus adding tothe revelry and rivalry of the occasion.Throughout the week of fierce competition there was a greatdisplay of talent not only from the student body but also theThe Waverley College Football Supporters Club (WCFSC) are highlyinfluential in their support of Waverley football and hosted thePresentation Dinner, capping off the season with a huge attendanceof over 350 people, including Ex-Socceroo and SBS CommentatorCraig Foster as the special guest. It follows the journey ofa young boy who plays 3 levels inside the computer game, "Power". During the first two levels of the game (adventure and fame) hequickly runs out of power as he keeps all of the prizes for himself. Playing the third level, humanity, he decides to share his prizes withother characters instead of keeping them for himself. As a resultof this sharing he generates enough power to finish the game aswell as bringing all of the characters back to life. The idea behind Wakakirri is to tell a story which makes apositive impact on the world. Students are judged on dance, music, sets, props, costumes, storyline, teamwork, behaviour anditem sustainability.96 boys from the Junior School competed at the Hills Centre inAugust. We won the award for the best school in public andgained a gold award for our sets and props. Building on the ever improving results of recent years, the Waverley College athletics team is showing no signs of slowing. The season format saw an intense, competitive and condensed fiveweeks of CAS athletics invitations. Equal to the task, the Waverleyathletes regularly broke personal bests and worked as a true team asthey finished third at this year's CAS championships. The Waverley Athletics Team was well represented under theleadership of team captain, Nicholas Mellick, Vice Captain oftrack, Matthew Horton, and Vice Captain of field, Luke Starr. Thesenior students were instrumental in serving as inspiration to theyounger and less experienced members of the team. Furthermore, the recruited professional coaches and teachers of the collegeoffered their words of wisdom and encouragement in search ofthe elusive CAS title. Acknowledging the importance of everytraining session, attendances were consistently high. The valuesof camaraderie and respect were clearly visible within each of thedifferent events at training.
