For information on the National Health Service please consult http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/WEJ Craig Travelling ScholarshipPage 3 of 4

British Council Australia has provided the following information about insurance:‘Any full-time international student in the UK for more than 6 months is covered under the NHS (National HealthService). Additionally, Medicare has a reciprocal agreement with the NHS for coverage. The student should register witha Doctors Surgery once they arrive. The international office or hall of residence will direct them to the appropriatesurgery. If they are travelling around the UK they should carry their NHS card with them and visit an emergency room at ahospital if they need medical assistance. If they travel outside the UK they should consider travel insurance. Allinsurance is deemed a personal choice by the British Council as there is no allowance given for covering insurance costs. However, it is suggested that scholars obtain travel insurance for the period of travelling from Australia to the UK and thefirst week and then whenever they leave the UK and their return to Australia. This makes insurance much moreaffordable.’11.
