A CertifiedHuman Res<strong>our</strong>ces Pr<strong>of</strong>essional,Koslowsky is a former Vice-President <strong>of</strong> Human Res<strong>our</strong>cesat Palliser Furniture. He ledCME <strong>Manitoba</strong>’s AdvancedManufacturing Initiative forseveral years, and has servedon the boards <strong>of</strong> CrosstownCivic Credit Union, WorkersCompensation Board <strong>of</strong><strong>Manitoba</strong> and ProvidenceCollege.Wanda McGorum is ProgramCoordinator at the UnitedFood and Commercial Workers(UFCW) Local 832 TrainingCentre, responsible for theplanning, development andimplementation <strong>of</strong> a widerange <strong>of</strong> adult training andeducational programming.Prior to joining UFCW in 2005,McGorum spent 16 years withUnited Way <strong>of</strong> Winnipeg whereshe held positions in Res<strong>our</strong>ceDevelopment, Marketing andCommunications.RECORD HIGH FALLENROLMENTRed River College’s fallenrolment hit another recordhigh in September 2009, with3.3 per cent more full-timestudents on campus than theprevious year.Growth has taken place inall student categories, withsignificant jumps in AdvancedDiploma, Certificate, andApprenticeship enrolments.College <strong>of</strong>ficials say findingsomewhere to put newstudents is a growingchallenge.“For several years we’ve beenoperating near full capacity,”explained Catherine Rushton,Interim President <strong>of</strong> Red RiverCollege. “Through creativescheduling and programdelivery we’ve accommodatedmore students, but the case forexpanding the College to meetgrowing student and industrydemand is clear.”NEW RESEARCH GROUPESTABLISHEDWith ice-cold winters andblazing hot summers, Winnipegis an ideal location for testingthe energy efficiency <strong>of</strong>buildings. And thanks to arecent multi-million dollargrant awarded to Red RiverCollege, the city is positionedto become a national leader inthe growing field <strong>of</strong> sustainableinfrastructure research.RRC will receive $2.3 millionover five years from thefederal government’s Collegeand Community InnovationProgram to form a researchgroup dedicated to improvingbuilding and constructiontechnologies.Based out <strong>of</strong> RRC’s Centrefor Applied Research inSustainable Infrastructure(CARSI), the new researchgroup will work closely withlocal industry on collaborativeprojects to support innovationand move new products intothe marketplace.ACHIEVING EXCELLENCEIN SUSTAINABILITYThe Province <strong>of</strong> <strong>Manitoba</strong>has recognized Red RiverCollege with a 2009 Excellencein Sustainability Award forResearch and Innovationthanks to its leadership indeveloping sustainable newtechnologies.Through its Applied Researchand Commercializationprogram, the College hasengaged in several projectsfocused on sustainability inthe building, construction andtransportation sectors. Much<strong>of</strong> this research has involvedtesting new technologies thatgenerate environmental andeconomic benefits, such as:• Evaluating the thermalproperties and performance<strong>of</strong> a prototype <strong>of</strong> the doublecurtain wall that was usedin construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>Manitoba</strong>Hydro’s new headquarters.• Converting 10 standardhybrid cars into plug-inhybrid electric vehicles andmonitoring their performancein a cold weather climate.• Integrating a new engine/transmission combinationinto a bus chassis forMotor Coach Industries tomeet heightened emissionstandards in the UnitedStates.• Testing a hydrogen-poweredtransit bus for cold weatherperformance.• Using spent cooking oil toproduce biodiesel for Collegevehicles, and soap to be usedas hand and equipment degreaser.“By working closely withindustry to develop innovative
