Non-Emergency 848-3250 Emergency 9-1-1Serving our Community since 1957Weyburn Police ServiceEnsuring a safe and secure environment for the community7Who do I contact aboutmy firearm &/or license?Am I required to have myweapon registered?Do I need a valid licenseto possess my weapons?Frequently Asked QuestionsRegistration RequirementsThe Government has announced its intention to simplify licence requirements for firearm owners and to remove therequirement to register non-restricted firearms. However, any changes to the Firearms Act must go through alegislative process and pass in Parliament. This will take time. In the meantime, firearm owners and users arerequired to comply with the current law. An amnesty protects some owners of non-restricted firearms while theyacquire licences and registration certificates. All firearms must have a valid Canadian registration certificate. To be able to register a firearm, an applicant must beat least 18 years old and have a valid firearms licence allowing them to possess that class of firearm.Owners of restricted and prohibited firearms that were registered in the former Restricted Weapons RegistrationSystem (RWRS) were required to re-register their firearms in CFIS by January 1, 2003, to update the informationand link it to their licence.A registration certificate issued under the Firearms Act does not have to be renewed unless the firearm is modified ina way that changes its class. When a firearm changes ownership, it will be registered to the new owner as part oftransfer process. When someone borrows a firearm, they must also borrow the registration certificate for thatfirearm.Licensing for Canadian Residents 18 and Older:The Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) is the only licence currently available to new applicants. It isrenewable every five years. The fee to renew a licence is waived until May 16, 2009. As a general rule, applicantsmust have passed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course.Firearms Acquisition Certificates (FAC) issued under the former law are considered to be licences. They need tobe replaced with a PAL before they expire.Canada Firearms Centre1-800-731-4000Information above obtained from the Canadian Firearms Programhttp://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/default_e.asp
