Organic Chemistry IWinter 2012General CommentsRegistration:Prerequisite: CHM 157+158 (or equivalent General Chemistry Courses).Quizes/Exams:There will be three quizzes, three examinations and one comprehensive final exam. The lowest quiz scoreand lowest exam score will be dropped (this does not include the final). Since some quizzes and exams maybe more difficult than others, points will be added to everyone’s scores so that the class average score ofeach quiz and exam is the same. This point adjustment will occur after the 3 rd quiz and 3 rd exam arecomplete. The extra points associated with the dropped exam or quiz are not kept. All quiz and exammaterial will be taken directly from class lectures so it is in your best interest to attend. There will be no make up exams or quizzes, missed exams or quizzes will be recorded as zero (i.e. you willuse the missed quiz/exam as your dropped score).Homework:There is no assigned homework in the class for points. However, the questions in the book directly relate tothe quiz and exam questions. So performing as many of the homework questions in the Bruice book aspossible is highly recommended. The in-chapter questions will give you a basic understanding but, if youwant the best chance of getting a 4.0 in the class, I recommend you complete all chapter questions.Grading:The final grades in this course will be assigned on the basis of the grade distribution for the entire class(curve). After each exam the curve for that exam will be shown in class so you can determine where youstand relative to the rest of the students. I will also indicate an approximate grade distribution for eachexam. If you are concerned about your grade I encourage you to talk with me so that we can asses theproblem and develop potential solutions.Office Hours:In addition to the formal office hours listed, I am willing to meet with any student if I am not busy. Emailquestions are encouraged and often I will answer them in class if the answer is lengthy. However, I will limit the amount of time I am available to answer questions on the day before an exam todiscourage the practice of cramming immediately prior to examinations. Plan your study accordingly andtake advantage of the regular opportunities throughout the semester in which I am available to help you.Academic Misconduct:No cheating on quizzes or tests is allowed or permitted under any circumstances. This involves the use ofany materials or information brought in from outside class, accessed via cell-phone, or from programmablecalculators. This also is defined as looking at a neighboring quiz or exam for answers or confirmation thatyour answer was correct. It is also defined as allowing others to cheat off of your tests and not reportingcheating when you have knowledge that others are cheating. The only item available to you during quizzesand exams is scratch paper and a TI-30X calculator. Even if you do not intend to cheat, please ensure thatyou are sitting in a location where others cannot look at your tests as it will not be obvious to me who is thecheater and who is being cheated. In the event that any such incidences are found, materials of allindividuals involved relevant to the incident will be submitted to the Dean of Students for a formal hearing. The decisions regarding who is guilty and the nature of the punishment will decided at this hearing and arenot within my decision-making power. Consequences can be severe, including an automatic “0.0” in thiscourse, academic suspension, automatic withdrawl from all current classes without a refund, removal ofcourse credits from previous OU courses, and expulsion. In case it is not clear, read this section and DO NOT CHEAT!!!!
