They did this with flying colours, with the sale of threerams for $10,000 – the first, KN121, to Kilcoolin Pastoral Co at Hamilton,KN285 to the Charinga stud, and KNP34 to the Minta stud at the AdelaideRoyal ram sale. These top sales were backed up by the on-property saleresult where 142 rams topped at $4200 and averaged a very solid $1287,while four rams averaged $5750 at Adelaide. Big, relatively plain-bodiedPoll Merino rams with wonderful free-growing wools with definition, densityand natural nourishment are the reason the regular Kamora Netley Parkclients are gaining new clients each year. Paul and Justin Boughen have notrested on their laurels though and after several significant sire investmentsin recent years, 2013 was no different. They paid $11,000 at the Adelaideram sale for a ram from Charinga then attended their on-property ram saleand paid $24,000 for another top ram that will blend well with the KamoraNetley Park breeding ewes. Plain bodies with good wool cutting skins werethe main attraction of these two new sires. Another top line-up of KamoraNetley Park rams will be offered this year. They will include more impressivesons of the highly successful Kamora 1, Moorundie Park NE20 (by Nyowee430 and purchased in partnership with Nyowee for $8000), Kamora 270(by Moorundie Park B297), Kamora 206 (by Moorundie Park G181), Uardry($16,000 purchase) and Nyowee L88 and his sons. Kamora Netley Park willbe displaying rams at Burra, Bendigo, Hamilton, Karoonda and Adelaide in2014. Its annual ram sale is on Friday, August 1 with about 200 Poll Merinorams on offer.KAMORA PARKDual-purpose, fine medium woolled Poll Merinos that offer consistentand repeatable performance is the key breeding objective of Colin andJulie Boughen and family, Kamora Park stud, Sandalwood. Their maturebreeding ewe flock averages just on 20µ fibre diameter. To achieve theirbreeding objectives, the stud has been selecting for dual-purpose traitsof carcase and wool since 1963, for bigger, plainer-bodied sheep forwell over a decade, and for early growth and improved muscling throughmeasurement with Merino Select. Independent assessment of theirprogress is achieved through Merino Select rankings and improvement. This is reinforced by successes in show classes, particularly the RAS FibreMeat class where Kamora Park has been the most successful exhibitorthroughout the history of this class with two outright wins, plus two winsfor three highest-scoring rams. The stud also won in a similar class atthe Bendigo Sheep and Wool Show (all-purpose class) in 2012. In CRCtrials, KP304 (RAS Fibre-meat winner) excelled in the Turretfield SARDIdemonstration flock and was consequently placed in the top ten siresnationally in all three indices (FP+, MP+ and DP+). Understandably, semenorders for this ram have come from across Australia and semen is stillavailable from KP304 and the other top sires. Continued client successesin sheep and wool sales and hogget competitions are Kamora Park’smost important measuring stick of progress. At its 2013 annual sale,157 rams sold to $3100 and averaged $963. At Classings Classic, sevenmore rams sold to $5000 (x2) and averaged $2764, highlighting depth ofclient satisfaction. This was topped off by a $15,000 high at Adelaide andthree rams averaging $8800. Overall Kamora Park sold 167 Poll Merinosat auction for an $1179 average, but there were plenty of very goodrams at great value in those results. In 2014, Kamora Park will again bedisplaying at the Burra Merino Expo on March 18, Bendigo Sheep and WoolShow in July, Karoonda Districts Merino Field Day on July 25, HamiltonSheepvention on August 4-5 and Royal Adelaide Show on September10-12. Kamora Park will be offering rams at its annual on-property ramsale on Friday, August 1 at 11am, with about 180 rams in the main auctionplus mini auction rams, plus the Classings Classic on Monday, September8 at Murray Bridge. Colin, Julie, Wade and Katelyn Boughen welcome yourenquiry and inspection.KELVALEThe Kelvale Poll Merino Stud was founded in 1966 by the Kellock familyand is now managed by Stephen and Peta Kellock with guidance fromDavid and Bev Kellock. Originating at Farrell Flat in the Mid North, throughsecession, it has now been relocated to Keith in the South East. There arecurrently 1000 stud ewes that are mated to Kelvale bred sires with a littleoutside influence, through AI and ET programs. Its main breeding objective isto improve the density, length and quality of the wool grown by plain-bodiedsheep. Breeding a highly productive animal with high growth rates and goodmuscle patterning has given the stud faster-growing animals which excel incurrent markets. Kelvale is currently shearing every six months and obtainingtesting lengths in excess of 60 millimetres with some lines above 70mm. Inthe current wool market, no discounts are being incurred at this length butthe aim is to genetically breed the length to above 70mm consistently. Avaluable tool the stud employs is the individual sampling of skin, to test thedensity and length of wool follicles. Deep crimping and bold, white wools aregrown with an average flock micron of 19.5 but the goal is to achieve 19within the next few years. Kelvale is actively involved in the collection anduse of data for the Sheep Genetics program – it has found the data invaluableto continually evaluate and improve carcase traits. Maintaining and breedingfor a plain-bodied sheep has allowed for the practice of mulesing to begradually phased out of the stud since 2005. No lambs have been mulesedin the stud or commercial flocks since 2008. Kelvale has also increasedlambing percentage to be consistently above 110 per cent from ewes matedwith some mobs achieving more than 130pc in the past three years. Thestud is prepared to look outside the square to breed a highly productivesheep that will thrive anywhere in Australia. It is now selling rams into Tas,Vic, NSW, Qld and across SA. Kelvale will display sheep throughout the yearand welcomes an inspection and chat at any of the following events: MidNorth Field Days at Burra, South East Field Days at Lucindale, Broken HillAgfair, Australian Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo, South East Stud MerinoBreeders Field Day at Keith, and the Hamilton Sheepvention. An on-propertyram sale will be held at Keith on Friday, August 8 at 1pm.Details: Stephen 08 8755 1761 or contact your local stock agent. Less skin means minimal flystrike, fewer chemicals, and no mulesing, reduced second cuts at shearing, and emphasis on theability of the ewe flock to rear a lamb each year. Achievements include aflock average of 20µ. All rams and ewes are subjectively and objectivelyclassed by renowned Classings Pty Ltd classer Bill Walker. The stud hasbrucellosis-free accreditation and Ovine Johnes Disease MN2 status. Sires inuse are Wallaloo Park, Lorelmo-Willalooka, Leahcim, Roemahikta, Ridgwayand Lucernbrae. There is emphasison conformation in order to withstand moderate to high rainfall. A constitutionto handle high stocking rates and develop genetic resistance to worms isalso a priority. The stud has a structured management program to increasefertility genetically. A number of clients consistently wean up to 130 per centlambs and regularly achieve outstanding results for sheep and wool sales.Growth rates and carcase traits have always been important at Mernowie. There is emphasis on post weaning weight gain with ASBVs +10 and abovebeing targeted.
