2014FINE START: Elders SA stud stock marketing manager Tom Penna and manager Tony Wetherall at the 2013 Elders SA Stud Merino Expo atBurra. West Coasters have traditionally been good bidders and that attitude tends to flow on to sales that follow across the rest of the state.West Coasters bring a smileBy TOM PENNAAUCTIONEERS have good andbad days.We come across tough salesthat are no fun for anyone. But,selling Merino and Poll Merino ramsin recent years has been good fun. There are probably not manyother industries that see the sameenthusiasm and purpose as we dofrom a group of on-property rambuyers. There may only be 40-50people at a sale, but when ‘SaleOh!’ is called it is action stations, things happen, people invest withconfidence. The mood of our ram selling seasonis initiated on Eyre Peninsula – orThe West Coast as it affectionatelyknown. Their early sales setthe scene. West Coasters havetraditionally been good bidders andthat attitude tends to flow on to salesthat follow across the rest of thestate.Ben Dickenson, Elders, Cummins, said: “Due to the wool market gettingstronger and less volatile, Merinos onthe West Coast are moving forward infavour. Also in favour are our youngewes – one of my clients attained$140 for surplus ewe lambs last year”.“Our wether lamb job has alsogained traction. We are seeing more‘traders’ looking to backgroundyoung Merino wether lambs thatreturn higher skin and wool prices. We have had increased interest inour pastoral wether lambs, selling at$45-$62,” he said.“We have also seen increasedinterest for our breeding ewes fromSouth East and NSW buyers lookingfor wool-cut and true West Coastframe for terminal lamb production. Our clients are realising a moresustainable long-term focus, with ourewes making $120 plus.”Another aspect to success of manyMerino sales has been the uppingof the ante by pastoralists. We areseeing buyers from the bush operatein the $800-$1500 range at sales. They are astute and, in many cases,long-standing stud clients who haveseen the merit of buying betterquality rams.Greg Foster, Elders Port Augusta, said that the rains that came midyearin 2013 gave the North WestPastoral district a new lease of lifeafter a prolonged dry period.“Grown sheep responded quicklyto the fresh winter feed and theJuly to September-drop lambingpercentages were at record levels,”he said.“Markets responded favourablyand lifted as the opportunity to placestore sheep placed pressure on theprocesses, forcing a change in thesupply-demand equation.“Spring and early summer of 2013was dry but there was a bulk ofwinter feed to carry sheep through. As always the next rain is welcome.”Craig Shearer, Elders Port Augusta, said “the last 12 months had alsobeen positive for northern pastoralgrowers”.“The 21u ranged from 1057 centsclean in early May to a high of 1274cclean in early December. At thehigher end of these levels the 21-23uwools have been trading in the 95pcdecile range since 1991 and returningbetween $1250 a bale for burry fleecewools and $1700 a bale for freestylewools,” he said.“Cuts were back in parts of the areabut we saw microns also lower, yieldssimilar to other years to lower levelsin some areas and vegetable matterconsiderably lower than normal.“The forward market has beentrading at spot auction prices and attimes to a premium to the market, giving growers very good hedgingopportunities.”While it must be said that it takesbuyers from everywhere to make asuccessful selling season, I can tellyou that auctioneers feel better aboutlife when a car load of West Coastersand or pastoralists drive through thegate on sale day.16 Merino Annual 2014www.elders.com.au

2014 Day One – On-propertyGREENFIELDSGreenfields Merino stud, founded in 1949 on Ashrosebloodlines, had regular purchases of Ashrose stud rams andewes as well as stud rams and semen from Collinsville. Collinsville bloodformed the basis of the Greenfields Poll Merino Stud, founded in 1957. Thestud sells rams to all parts of SA and interstate and they are keenly soughtfor their well-nourished, bright, stylish wool and large, plain bodies. Emphasisis on breeding early-maturing sheep with strong constitutions. Greenfieldsclients regularly achieve high returns for their quality wool clip and top pricesfor livestock sold at saleyards. In 2013, the stud offered and sold sevenstud Merino and Poll Merino rams at the Royal Adelaide Show ram saleto a top price of $15,000, averaging $9214. Its annual on-property sale inSeptember was another highlight, where 98 rams sold to a top of $5200,averaging $1900. In the mini-auction, 35 rams averaged $668. Greenfieldshas two lambings a year, enabling quality rams to be available for selectionthroughout. Studmasters Jim, Robert and James Sullivan are committed tobreeding top-quality Merinos and Poll Merinos, constantly striving to producerams with superior genetics. They are available to assist clients with classingand provide general advice with ram selection and flock management. The stud’s annual on-property production sale is onMonday, September 15, where 150 rams and 300 stud ewes will be offered.GUM HILLEstablished in 1885, Gum Hill Merino Stud has experienced and survivedmany economic and seasonal changes. The challenges that havecome from these experiences have directed the type of Merino that thestudmasters, over many years, have chosen to pursue. As one of only twosurviving studs which originally began practising extensive measurementfor economic factors from the mid 1950s onwards, the need for a profitableand productive animal has resulted in the stud producing plain-bodied,strong-constitution, fertile, easycare animals that are performing for clientsunder a range of commercial environments. It believes that the individualanimal’s all-round performance for fleece weight, body weight, micron, comfort factor, and fleece rot or flystrike is as important as pedigrees. GumHill is a family-owned and run business, having been in the Lines family since1885, and covers properties at Mount Bryan in the Mid North and Keith inthe South East, allowing for an increase and diversity in client requirements.Rams are bred at both properties, and the top 60 per cent of the drop areoffered for private selection in July and October. Gum Hill does not auction itsrams because it believes that clients need individual time to make the correctbreeding selection for their flocks. With clients spread across Australia, thestud’s breeding flock can meet most commercial sheep breeders’ objectivesrequired from the modern Merino.Details: www.linesgumhill.com.auHAMILTON RUNThe Hamilton Run Poll Merino stud is a continuation of stud Merino sheepbreeding which began in the 1950s by the Andrews family. Wool type selection that is so important in the range of testingclimatic conditions in this country and Hamilton Run’s highly waxed andlow suint wools, enhanced with the Well Gully infusions have excelled in allareas. At Hamilton Run an electronic tagging system is used for collection ofdata. Rams are selected visually and backed by the use of ASBVs, providingadditional selection pressure at classing. A Pedigree Matchmaker systemprovides accuracy of mothering over its large ewe base, saving a lot of labourand time. In line with demand and to keep prices affordable for regularclients, the Hamilton Run Poll Merino ewe base has grown, with a largernumber of rams being offered this year, giving a wider selection range.Together with a flock of an additional 1000 meat-predominant stud ewes, more than 600 rams are sold annually by auction and private selection. Thirdgenerationstud Merino breeder Greg Andrews has established and basedthe stud in the undulating country at Jamestown. Sheep are run betweenthe home property and pastoral country of the Southern Flinders ranges.Hamilton Run produces sheep with outstanding constitution and structure, growing stylish medium wool of high follicle density. Its genetics influenceflocks over a wide range of environs including south east Qld, central andnorthern NSW, the southern and Wimmera areas in Vic, plus all regions ofSA. Client successes support the versatility and adaptability of HamiltonRun sheep. At its2013 annual on-property ram sale at Jamestown, 100 Poll Merino rams soldto $3200 and averaged $1478. To assist repeat clients, Hamilton Run offersfree ram delivery and complimentary ewe classing services. The HamiltonRun ram sale at Jamestown is held annually in September and this year, ison Thursday, September 4. They did this with flying colours, with the sale of threerams for $10,000 – the first, KN121, to Kilcoolin Pastoral Co at Hamilton,KN285 to the Charinga stud, and KNP34 to the Minta stud at the AdelaideRoyal ram sale. These top sales were backed up by the on-property saleresult where 142 rams topped at $4200 and averaged a very solid $1287,while four rams averaged $5750 at Adelaide. Big, relatively plain-bodiedPoll Merino rams with wonderful free-growing wools with definition, densityand natural nourishment are the reason the regular Kamora Netley Parkclients are gaining new clients each year. Paul and Justin Boughen have notrested on their laurels though and after several significant sire investmentsin recent years, 2013 was no different. They paid $11,000 at the Adelaideram sale for a ram from Charinga then attended their on-property ram saleand paid $24,000 for another top ram that will blend well with the KamoraNetley Park breeding ewes. Plain bodies with good wool cutting skins werethe main attraction of these two new sires. Another top line-up of KamoraNetley Park rams will be offered this year. They will include more impressivesons of the highly successful Kamora 1, Moorundie Park NE20 (by Nyowee430 and purchased in partnership with Nyowee for $8000), Kamora 270(by Moorundie Park B297), Kamora 206 (by Moorundie Park G181), Uardry($16,000 purchase) and Nyowee L88 and his sons. Kamora Netley Park willbe displaying rams at Burra, Bendigo, Hamilton, Karoonda and Adelaide in2014. Its annual ram sale is on Friday, August 1 with about 200 Poll Merinorams on offer.KAMORA PARKDual-purpose, fine medium woolled Poll Merinos that offer consistentand repeatable performance is the key breeding objective of Colin andJulie Boughen and family, Kamora Park stud, Sandalwood. Their maturebreeding ewe flock averages just on 20µ fibre diameter. To achieve theirbreeding objectives, the stud has been selecting for dual-purpose traitsof carcase and wool since 1963, for bigger, plainer-bodied sheep forwell over a decade, and for early growth and improved muscling throughmeasurement with Merino Select. Independent assessment of theirprogress is achieved through Merino Select rankings and improvement. This is reinforced by successes in show classes, particularly the RAS FibreMeat class where Kamora Park has been the most successful exhibitorthroughout the history of this class with two outright wins, plus two winsfor three highest-scoring rams. The stud also won in a similar class atthe Bendigo Sheep and Wool Show (all-purpose class) in 2012. In CRCtrials, KP304 (RAS Fibre-meat winner) excelled in the Turretfield SARDIdemonstration flock and was consequently placed in the top ten siresnationally in all three indices (FP+, MP+ and DP+). Understandably, semenorders for this ram have come from across Australia and semen is stillavailable from KP304 and the other top sires. Continued client successesin sheep and wool sales and hogget competitions are Kamora Park’smost important measuring stick of progress. At its 2013 annual sale,157 rams sold to $3100 and averaged $963. At Classings Classic, sevenmore rams sold to $5000 (x2) and averaged $2764, highlighting depth ofclient satisfaction. This was topped off by a $15,000 high at Adelaide andthree rams averaging $8800. Overall Kamora Park sold 167 Poll Merinosat auction for an $1179 average, but there were plenty of very goodrams at great value in those results. In 2014, Kamora Park will again bedisplaying at the Burra Merino Expo on March 18, Bendigo Sheep and WoolShow in July, Karoonda Districts Merino Field Day on July 25, HamiltonSheepvention on August 4-5 and Royal Adelaide Show on September10-12. Kamora Park will be offering rams at its annual on-property ramsale on Friday, August 1 at 11am, with about 180 rams in the main auctionplus mini auction rams, plus the Classings Classic on Monday, September8 at Murray Bridge. Colin, Julie, Wade and Katelyn Boughen welcome yourenquiry and inspection.KELVALEThe Kelvale Poll Merino Stud was founded in 1966 by the Kellock familyand is now managed by Stephen and Peta Kellock with guidance fromDavid and Bev Kellock. Originating at Farrell Flat in the Mid North, throughsecession, it has now been relocated to Keith in the South East. There arecurrently 1000 stud ewes that are mated to Kelvale bred sires with a littleoutside influence, through AI and ET programs. Its main breeding objective isto improve the density, length and quality of the wool grown by plain-bodiedsheep. Breeding a highly productive animal with high growth rates and goodmuscle patterning has given the stud faster-growing animals which excel incurrent markets. Kelvale is currently shearing every six months and obtainingtesting lengths in excess of 60 millimetres with some lines above 70mm. Inthe current wool market, no discounts are being incurred at this length butthe aim is to genetically breed the length to above 70mm consistently. Avaluable tool the stud employs is the individual sampling of skin, to test thedensity and length of wool follicles. Deep crimping and bold, white wools aregrown with an average flock micron of 19.5 but the goal is to achieve 19within the next few years. Kelvale is actively involved in the collection anduse of data for the Sheep Genetics program – it has found the data invaluableto continually evaluate and improve carcase traits. Maintaining and breedingfor a plain-bodied sheep has allowed for the practice of mulesing to begradually phased out of the stud since 2005. No lambs have been mulesedin the stud or commercial flocks since 2008. Kelvale has also increasedlambing percentage to be consistently above 110 per cent from ewes matedwith some mobs achieving more than 130pc in the past three years. Thestud is prepared to look outside the square to breed a highly productivesheep that will thrive anywhere in Australia. It is now selling rams into Tas,Vic, NSW, Qld and across SA. Kelvale will display sheep throughout the yearand welcomes an inspection and chat at any of the following events: MidNorth Field Days at Burra, South East Field Days at Lucindale, Broken HillAgfair, Australian Sheep and Wool Show at Bendigo, South East Stud MerinoBreeders Field Day at Keith, and the Hamilton Sheepvention. Old Ashrose is basedon Collinsville blood, which was introduced in the 1930s. Sires have beenintroduced in recent years from studs of a similar type, including Collinsville,Ashrose, North Ashrose, Kolindale, Greenfields and Charinga. The studaims to breed large-frame, plainer-body sheep with sound conformationand constitution. Weaning and yearling weights are used to focus on earlymaturity. Wools are well nourished, soft handling and white, with strongselection placed on wool quality, staple length, strength and yield. Thefive-year average fibre diameter is 21µ. The aim is to continue to produce a21µ clip while increasing fleece and body weights and lambing percentages.Market trends for wool and meat quality are continually reviewed to ensureOld Ashrose sheep remain relevant to current and future requirements. In2013, a total of 2800 Merino and Poll Merino stud ewes were mated. At the2013 on-property sale, 94 rams in the main auction were offered and sold toa top of $5200 for an $1774 average while 48 mini auction rams averaged$714. A pleasing feature of the sale was the number of interstate and localram breeders who bought quality stud rams at reasonable prices. Its aim is to produce sheepthat maximise profitability in wool and carcase markets for their businessand yours. Bred in the lower-rainfall pastoral country east of Burra, OldKelvale sheep are renowned for their strong constitution and ability to thriveand reproduce under erratic seasonal conditions. Breeding with sound andconsistent genetics has resulted in a dual-purpose sheep that is profitablein the wool market, possesses a large, plain body and a heavy wool cuttingability with a soft, white 21-22µ fleece. The large, early-maturing frame ofOld Kelvale sheep maximise profitability in the carcase market. In the pastfive years, its wether lambs averaged well above $100 a head – a consistentand profitable return. Micron testing, eye muscle testing and visual classingprovides us with valuable guidelines for breeding and sire selection, resultingin sheep that are successful in ram sales, wool sales and commercial sheepmarkets. A number of Old Kelvale rams will be displayed at the field days atthe Burra Oval, along with the Royal Adelaide show team for 2014. 2014 Day Two – Burra Ovalof client flocks. The Dallas’ have placed more emphasis onplainer bodies, higher growth and improved carcase traits inthe past two decades, but not at the expense of wool cut andnourishment. Selection for lower microns, staple length andnatural nourishment now sees them producing an averageof 9 kilograms of 20µ wool over their entire ewe flock. This clearly meansmore profit. The stud’s wool cut and quality in 2013 was phenomenal. Visualassessment and experience is supported by actual measurement of fibrediameter, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, comfort factor, bodywrinkle score, wool quality index, bodyweight (growth), fat, eye muscle depth, and scrotal circumference, thus eliminating guesswork and speeding up flockimprovement. Orrie Cowie will display at Burra in March and Bendigo in July, with a cross-section of all its successful family lines. ‘The right wool withthe right genetics on the right body’ is a line applicable to Orrie Cowie, fromthe paddock right through to the fashionable consumer. This also fits withthe purchase last year of a magnificent Coddington Poll ram for $28,000.With figures of 16.5M, 2.6SD, 15.8CV and 99.7CF, his progeny are muchanticipated. The Orrie Cowie lambing in 2013 was outstanding and will leadto a wider selection. In their Poll families, the rams that are performing reallywell are: Flinders (Nepowie) – progeny are outstanding, quick early growersand also mature into very big sheep; Earle (Exceller) – progeny have somemagnificent wools and are still big sheep; Regal (M66) – producing someabsolute pearlers; and Prince (Napoleon) – breeding as good as he looked, which was always impressive. Their Merino (horned) families of specialinterest are: Exceller – still pumping out rich white crimpy wools; and Aris(Radnor-Banavie) – young rams showing some excellent early growth andbig plain bodies. Dennis and Heather said the demand for semen from thesetop-performing sires had been very pleasing, and they invite further semenenquiries. The stud was founded on ewes and rams bought fromRidgway Advance in 2005, has been on the Ridgway Advance bloodsince 2001, with some infusion from Calcookara Stud. Before this, it wasMernowie, Kelvale, Barton Hill, Moorundie Park and Craiglee in the 1970s,80s and 90s. Pepper Well Poll selects for early-maturing, big long-framedsheep, heavily muscled in the right places, loin and hind leg, which isattached to a huge pelvic area. These animals are always covered withuncomplicated skin, draped in very long , white , bold staples of silkysoft , deeply crimped , aligned wool. Mature ewes average 20µ. About90 per cent maiden ewes are used in the stud mob to fast-track geneticgain. It dislikes pampered stock -stock are run tough, stud included, withno shedding and little strategic supplementary feeding. Simplistically, itall boils down to how much profit your sheep make for you from eachmouthful of grass they eat. Pepper Well Poll ceased mulesing with the2008-drop – too easy. Fertility rates have been as high as 131pc lambsmarked to ewes mated. Robust sheep that breed on with high fertility, good early growth with excellent wool and the ability to put on weightfast when the feed is on is what the stud is all about. Pepper Well hasbeen OJD vaccinating since 2006, is brucellosis-free and waiting for itsrecent PFC 350 results. This, combined with minimal or no shedding, nofoot trimming and with ASBVs (coming soon) make the right ram selectiona breeze. The 2010 stud drop of 120 ram lambs weaned at 100 daysweighed 40 kilograms in average body weight, topping at 53kg bodyweight after trucking and a 24-hour feed and water curfew. Think aboutthose numbers for a second: that is some serious early vigour! To backthis up this year, the entire drop, with 100-day weaning weight of 38 kg,are now 172 days old at 54kg, ranging from 20 to 69kg. Pepper Well’s2014 sale will be held at its Keyneton property on Tuesday, September 2,and inspections can be arranged by appointment. Combined withthorough visual assessment, the figures provided help identify rams andewes that exhibit the genetic potential to make gains in wool quality, volume, early maturity and fertility. It is these characteristics that Southroseclients consistently select for each year and by including ASBVs with all2014rams sold, they are able to confidently choose rams that suittheir individual breeding objectives. Clients have the option ofselecting from mulesed or un-mulesed rams and from 2014,all rams available will also be approved Gudair vaccinates inaddition to maintaining their Sheep MAP status. This change isto avoid a clash with the bi-annual Cleve Field Days, a major event forEyre Peninsula producers. Most of the big, productive White River ramswill be fully paddock-reared, and the leading 10 from each stud havehad extra preparation to fully display their genetic capabilities. This yearmarks the start of a new chapter in the evolution and development ofthe White River Merino and Poll Merino studs. After relocating the entireoperation on upper Eyre Peninsula at Minnipa and Poochera and buildingthe Poll Merino numbers up to match the annual Merino offering ,theDaniell family is now settled and ready to make the transition ‘back tothe future’. It has always been their objective to get back to offeringselect rams at the Adelaide Ram Sale after the stud relocated, so look outfor a good selection of White River rams in Adelaide in 2014. The familyhas invested strongly and astutely in new genetic infusions in the pastfive years, especially in their Poll Merino program as it has been built up.Expect to see some of those new genetics on display at Burra in March. The latest investment, and arguably the most significant, was at the 2013Adelaide Royal Show when White River paid the $34,000 top price forCollinsville Poll 120102. While the ram obviously impressed John andWes Daniell then, they are even more impressed now. “He has put on18 kilograms of bodyweight since Adelaide and cut 11kg of 20µ wool atjust over seven months wool growth. That wool is so well-defined andnourished, which is very important for clients in our environment,” Johnsaid.www.elders.com.auMerino Annual 2014 25
