And I am glad it has happened.”Hall was fluent in French, Italian, and German and as ayoung woman wanted a career in the U.S. Foreign Service. While working as a clerk at the American Embassyin Warsaw, she lost her left leg in a hunting accident. The Foreign Service would not take her becauseof her disability. Undeterred and with the Second WorldWar looming, she joined the French army and worked asan ambulance driver. After the defeat of the French forces, she wentto Britain, where she joined the British Special OperationsExecutive, which taught her spycraft and sent her toVichy France to establish a network to support the FrenchUnderground, Manning said.Posing as an American newspaper reporternamed Brigitte Le Contre, Hall worked for 15 months inVichy, helping to coordinate the activities of the undergroundand aiding escaped prisoners of war.“From my point of view and that of many of mycolleagues, Virginia Hall can be considered the greatestwartime agent,” Chirac’s statement quoted one of her fellowagents as saying.Sought by the Gestapo, she escaped throughSpain and returned to Britain, where she joined the U.S.Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor to the CentralIntelligence Agency, Manning said.Hall returned to occupied France in 1944 andbegan to organize sabotage and guerrilla missions in supportof the Allied invasion of Normandy. She pretendedto be a milkmaid during the day, mapped drop zones, locatedsafe houses, and trained resistance fighters in sabotageand guerrilla warfare.Hall, who later worked for the CIA, received theU.S. Distinguished Service Cross in 1945 for her wartimeservice, the only female civilian to receive the honor. The discovery that Hall had never received theroyal warrant to accompany her MBE came during backgroundresearch for an oil painting of Hall. The paintingis ultimately meant to hang in the CIA’s museum, artistJeff Bass said.40Journal of Special Operations Medicine Volume 8, Edition 2 / Spring 08
