Jazz, it's a tough 

business for some. 

Never a headline music form, not since 1962 anyway, it suffers 

from a lack of media exposure and big record company support, 

yet as a live form, here at least, it goes from strength to strength. 

We are enjoying one of our greatest seasons for stellar artists. This 

October we have enjoyed Avishai Cohen, Joe Lovano and Dave 

Douglas, The Bad Plus, Steve Smith and Jeff Lorber all selling 

tickets like there is no tomorrow. Our Late Late shows are getting 

ever more popular, and it doesn’t stop there. Stacey Kent, Dianne 

Reeves, Terence Blanchard, Ravi Coltrane, Dee Dee Bridgewater 

and the rest of November’s shows will also all be playing to packed 

houses. Happy days. 

There’s a nod to the past on its way. We have been trying for years 

to find a way to bring a US Big Band over but the economics have 

always got in the way, however we are really pleased that we have 

been able to engage the Mingus Big Band for a week here at the 

club in late November, just like in the olden Pete King and Ronnie 

Scott days. Double houses all week we look forward to hosting a 

mass of New York A-list musicians playing the music of Charles 

Mingus, whose legacy is so well maintained by his widow Sue, who 

will be over here with us too. And then December/Christmas, and 

a lot of familiar faces back again to help the annual mayhem 

along, but a change at New Year when house favourite Georgie 

Fame and his Blue Flames join us (and Ray ‘8 Clams’ Gelato) to 

bring in 2013. Georgie has even promised us his party set-didn’t 

know he had one. Lawks.

Roberto Fonseca is one of the most extraordinary, charismatic young 

pianists, composers and band leaders to explode from Cuba in recent 

times. He wowed audiences as a member of Buena Vista Social Club, 

co-produced Ibrahim Ferrer’s last album with Nick Gold, and his debut 

album Zamazu was released to global acclaim. An explosive pianist, 

Fonseca’s dazzling music draws on the traditions of Cuban music 

though he also brings the lyricism of Herbie Hancock and the drive of 

McCoy Tyner to his music as well as an unparalleled gift for melody. 

Soulful and beguiling, his music transcends artificial definitions such as 

jazz or Latin but is a vibrant, wondrous contemporary reinvention of the 

venerable traditions of both musics.

George Clooney's film Good Night, and Good Luck returns to London for the 

first time since last year’s amazing Sing The Truth concert with Angelique 

Kidjo and Lizz Wright. These rare intimates shows, her first solo shows since 

a sold out Barbican show in April 2008, offer a unique opportunity to get up 

close to one of the pre-eminent jazz vocalists in the world today. Quadruple 

Grammy award-winning and signed to the legendary Blue Note label, 

Reeves' story-telling instinct, sultry vocals and breath-taking virtuosity have 

won rave reviews across the globe.

Independent and ‘the doyen of Brazilian singer-songwriters by the 

Guardian singer, guitarist, composer, drummer, and percussionist, 

Vinicius Cantuaria’s music is Brazilian jazz at its finest, and song 

writing at its most adventurous. With its decidedly twenty-first century 

feel, Cantuária’ sound might best be described as ‘post-electronica 

acoustic’ as he expertly mixes the samba and bossa sounds of his 

native Brazil with more contemporary New York downtown sounds.

many of jazz’s brightest new talents (including pianists Robert Glasper 

and Aaron Parks) and he appears here with a formidable outfit featuring

PATTI AUSTIN 

World-renowned jazz-tinged soul and pop singer who made her 

professional debut at the age of five, but became a star in the late 

‘70s with a run of superb albums for the CTI label. Collaborations 

with Tom Browne, George Benson, Quincy Jones and Michael 

Jackson followed, and Austin continues to record marvellous 

sophisticated pop records while also exploring the work of such 

iconic figures as Ella Fitzgerald and George Gershwin.

SOUL FAMILY 

Hosted by charismatic singer Williams, Soul Family Sunday is a 

monthly event presenting a host of top-notch guests from the world 

of UK R&B, soul and jazz. Blessed with a huge range, Williams moves 

effortlessly between heart-rending ballads, funky originals and deft 

swing and she has been joined by guests ranging from Beth Rowley 

and Gwyneth Herbert to Roachford, Jamie Cullum and Omar.

The second son of John and Alice Coltrane, Ravi is a superb tenor 

and soprano saxophonist and noted composer whose unique, 

compelling music has been described as having an elusive beauty. 

Ethereal but powerful, edgy but compelling his shifting compositions 

and superlative playing have marked him out as a major voice in his 

own right and he appears here supporting his highly acclaimed 

Blue Note debut album, Spirit Fiction released earlier this year to 

considerable critical acclaim.

THE JAZZ 

PASSENGERS 

Legendary New York Downtown group, the Jazz Passengers were founded 

in 1987 by Roy Nathanson and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes in order to bring 

lively humour and entertainment back into modern jazz. The name, a takeoff 

on Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, signifies that the musicians are merely 

along for a wild ride. The band also includes percussionist E.J. Rodriguez, 

bassist Brad Jones (a cohort of Elvin Jones and Muhal Richard Abrams), 

Steely Dan touring vibist Bill Ware and guitarist Marc Ribot, who has 

appeared on albums by noted singer/songwriters Elvis Costello and Tom 

Waits. Nathanson and Fowlkes met while playing in the pit band for the Big 

Apple Circus, which gave them the opportunity to play the Charles Mingus 

music they loved and pay the bills as well!

DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER

Don’t miss this unique chance to catch one of jazz’s greatest voices. Hailed by Time 

Out as the “last of the great jazz divas” and arguably the finest jazz singer of her 

generation, Dee Dee Bridgewater sang with Roy Ayers and the Thad Jones/Mel 

Lewis orchestra in the ‘70s and appeared in the Broadway musical The Wiz. But it 

wasn’t until the late '80s and a series of fantastic albums for the Verve label that 

she received international acclaim, including a Grammy award-winning celebration 

of Ella and more recently, recordings of French Chanson, Kurt Weill and ‘To Billie With 

Love’, a heartfelt celebration of Billie Holiday. It was after the Billie Holiday show at 

the Barbican in 2010 that she became stranded in London due to a volcanic ash 

cloud preventing air flight and performed an impromptu set at the club. She had 

such a great time that she vowed to come back, and after last year’s massively sold 

out five night run when she had so much fun, she promised to return again.

AND THE DRUMHEDZ

Superb, effortlessly funky drummer from Houston Texas who has played 

with Adele, D’Angelo, Beyoncé, Kenny Garrett, Terence Blanchard, 

Wynton Marsalis, Me’shell N’Degeocello, Lalah Hathaway, Ledisi, Sonny 

Rollins, Mos Def, Erykah Badu and a whole host more, but probably best 

known at Ronnie’s for his roof-raising performances with the Robert 

Glasper Trio/Experiment. Now charting his own course expect savagely 

funky jazz, funk, hip hop grooves and a whole lot more from one of 

modern music’s most powerful and influential drummers.

the Delta, West Coast and British. Expect blues classics from Eric 

Clapton, BB King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Albert King,

Arguably the greatest big band of them all. There are few sounds in jazz as 

exciting as the rambunctious, hard-swinging 14 piece Mingus Big Band, but 

then there have been few musicians and composers as dynamic and 

driven as the great, late Charles Mingus who died in 1979. During his own 

lifetime the great composer often struggled to keep a big band together 

and although his small group recordings are amongst the greatest in jazz, 

it was always the voicings of the larger ensemble that Mingus wrote for. 

This then is a unique chance to hear some of the most exciting music in 

jazz heard how the composer wanted it to be heard. Under the artistic 

direction of Sue Mingus, the Mingus Big Band performed every Thursday 

night from 1991 to 2004 at Fez under Time Cafe in New York City. It 

maintained weekly residencies in the city from then until October 2008, 

when it began “Mingus Mondays” at Jazz Standard. Sue now brings her 

peerless ensemble to London for twelve shows in six nights for what will 

be some of the Autumn’s hottest tickets.

Blues/pop hero Paul Jones (the Manfreds, The Blues Band, and BBC 

Radio 2 presenter) joins Digby Fairweather’s Half Dozen for a 

rockin’ show that takes in everything from Dixieland, to hard bop 

and R’n’B. Fairweather is a jazz institution, a fine trumpeter, writer 

and broadcaster who enjoyed a long association with the great 

George Melly before joining forces with Jones for what promises to 

be a hugely enjoyable show.

Knight, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Jackson 5 and of course Stevie

vocals and baritone saxophone, Boysy Battrum alto and tenor saxophones, 

Mighty Matt Foundling on piano, Bullmoose K. Shirley on guitar, Shark Van

classic big band tunes: the perfect soundtrack to the festive celebrations with superbly

Manchester-based jazz & blues singer/pianist Jeremy Sassoon returns 

to Ronnie Scott’s following his memorable sell-out debut at the club

rapturous responses wherever it has performed. The show features a fourpiece 

horn section, three backing singers and has a mix of well-known 

Ray Charles classics (Georgia, What I’d Say) and lesser known gems 

from the late great ‘Brother Ray’ (The Jealous Kind, This Little Girl of Mine).

Celebrated big band, first founded in 1965 by Bill Ashton OBE, the National 

Youth jazz Orchestra has been nurturing young British jazz talent for 

almost five decades. NYJO features some of the best, most gifted and 

talented of the next generation of Great British jazz musicians. Today’s 

presentation is A Christmas Carol in Six movements, a glorious jazz suite 

specially written for NYJO by Paul Hart and is performed with readings 

from Dickens’ most famous short story.

special shows she pays a very personal tribute to the great Nina 

Simone, a regular and much loved visitor to Ronnie’s, with a fine band 

featuring pianist Simon Wallace, bass player Steve Watts and ex-Nina 

Simone drummer Paul Robinson.

Who better to usher in a Soho new year than the great Georgie Fame? A 

genuine legend of the British music scene for over fifty years, Fame’s 

blend of jazz and R&B earned him three number one hits in the early ‘60s. 

He has been a fixture of the Soho scene since then, when his cool vocals 

and superlative hammond playing lit up such legendary venues as the 

Flamingo and Wag club and a key member of Van Morrison’s groups. 

Ray Gelato brings in the New Year with his own unique take on the 

swinging sounds of Cab Calloway, Louis Jordan and co to the party and 

the superb Ronnie Scott All-Stars round out the show.
