Fosen 1Style—Tone—Voice—Mood—Adapted from Tough, Sweet, and Stuffy by Walker Gibson#1The hills across the valley of the Ebro were long and white. On this side there was no shade andno trees and the station was between two lines of rails in the sun. Close against the side of thestation there was the warm shadow of the building and a curtain, made of strings of bamboobeads, hung across the open door into the bar, to keep out flies. The American and the girl withhim sat at a table in the shade, outside the building. It was very hot and the express fromBarcelona would come in forty minutes. It stopped at this junction for two minutes and went onto Madrid.#2The facts presented are that the duties of a professor encompass not only the usual lecture andteaching duties but also the communication and advancement of knowledge through researchand publication. Appointments are commonly made to college and university faculties with theexpectation that the individuals involved will carry on independent research in their fields ofcompetence and will put that research to use in advancing the body of learning in that area byteaching, lecturing, and writing. It is customary, therefore, for professors to engage in researchfor the above purposes. Where the research is undertaken with a view to scholarly publication, the expenses for such purposes cannot usually be considered to have been incurred for thepurpose of producing a specific income-producing asset . . .#3The sights, the scents, the looks, the lights . . .There’s absolutely no time like the holidays. Fosen 2#4With respect to problems of interim financing, and in consideration of the fact that short-terminterest rates are prohibitive, the decision was made by the Finance Committee that the projectshould not be pursued beyond stage three of the design process until appropriate long-termfinancing can be secured through established capital market sources.#5The move from a structuralist account in which capital is understood to structure social relationsin relatively homologous ways to a view of hegemony in which power relations are subject torepetition, convergence, and rearticulation brought the question of temporality into thethinking of structure, and marked a shift from a form of Althusserian theory that takes structuraltotalities as theoretical objects to one in which the insights into the contingent possibility ofstructure inaugurate a renewed conception of hegemony as bound up with the contingent sitesand strategies of the rearticulation of power.#6Nuclear receptor coregulators are coactivators or corepressors that are required by nuclearreceptors for efficient transcripitonal regulation. In this context, we define coactivators, broadly,as molecules that interact with nuclear receptors and enhance their transactivation.Analogously, we refer to nuclear receptor corepressors as factors that interact with nuclearreceptors and lower the transcription rate at their target genes. Most coregulators are, bydefinition, rate limiting for nuclear receptor activation and repression, but do not significantlyalter basal transcription. Recent data have indicated multiple modes of action of coregulators, including direct interactions with basal transcription factors and covalent modification ofhistones and other proteins. Reflecting this functional diversity, many coregulators exist indistinct steady state precomplexes, which are thought to associate in promoter-specificconfigurations. In addition, these factors may function as molecular gates to enable integrationof diverse signal transduction pathways at nuclear receptor-regulated promoters. This reviewwill summarize selected aspects of our current knowledge of the cellular and molecular biologyof nuclear receptor coregulators.
