To the reader<br />
<strong>Divers</strong> <strong>Alert</strong> <strong>Network</strong>® (DAN®) is a nonprofit medical and emergency assistance<br />
organization, the only one solely dedicated to diving safety. For more than<br />
30 years, it has served as a lifeline to the scuba industry, operating diving’s only<br />
24-hour emergency hotline (+1-919-684-9111) as well as a non-emergency<br />
medical information line (+1-919-684-2948). DAN’s continuing mission is to<br />
help divers in need with medical emergency assistance and to promote diving<br />
safety through research, education, products and services.<br />
DAN is focused on education. Whether in the form of emergency response training,<br />
lectures, workshops or webinars, we are dedicated to providing health and<br />
safety information to the diving community. Our network of physicians and<br />
academic centers adds an additional layer of service and ensures that we provide<br />
the highest quality of information and support possible.<br />
With years of experience answering and researching diving medical and safety<br />
questions, it is clear that certain topics are of common interest. We have compiled<br />
more than 100 of these for use as quick reference and to ensure that those<br />
who may hesitate to ask are nonetheless informed.<br />
The creation of this book is made possible because of member support. DAN’s<br />
nonprofit efforts, like the DAN Emergency Hotline, Medical Information Line<br />
and research, are largely supported by the membership dues and insurance<br />
purchased by divers like you. DAN Membership supports our operations and,<br />
in turn, we support the entire diving community. Your membership not only<br />
enables DAN to do all that it does to assist the diving community, it comes with<br />
