Yale University School of Medic<strong>in</strong>e is one of fours sites across the country to have a Cl<strong>in</strong>icalScholars Program. The other three programs are at the University of California at LosAngeles, the University of Michigan, and the University of Pennsylvania. Yale has been a sitefor the Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Scholars Program s<strong>in</strong>ce the <strong>in</strong>ception of the program 35 years ago. One ofthe more prom<strong>in</strong>ent graduates of the program is Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. SurgeonGeneral.Commitment to <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong>As part of their tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> community research and its translation <strong>in</strong>to action, Cl<strong>in</strong>icalScholars learn how to work with local community leaders, together assess health prioritiesof the community, and explore ways to address those priorities. Although most Cl<strong>in</strong>icalScholars will only be <strong>in</strong> the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong> community 2 years, they are committed to mak<strong>in</strong>g acontribution to the community while they are here.The faculty of the program is committed to provid<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>uity <strong>in</strong> the program’srelationships with community organizations as Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Scholars move on and supportCl<strong>in</strong>ical Scholar community projects dur<strong>in</strong>g their time <strong>in</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong>.A Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee on Community <strong>Project</strong>s has been established to guide the Scholarsand faculty efforts <strong>in</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong>. The Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee has representation fromcommunity organizations such as the Health Department, the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong> Family Alliance,the Hill Health Center, the Fair <strong>Haven</strong> Community Health Centers, Yale <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong> Hospitaland the Hospital of St. Raphael’s, the Community Action Agency, JUNTA for ProgressiveAction, other Yale community-based efforts, and former Scholars. All members of theSteer<strong>in</strong>g Committee share a commitment to full community engagement.Current <strong>Project</strong>sIn addition to partner<strong>in</strong>g with the <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong> Family Alliance on the <strong>Photovoice</strong> project,another Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Scholar is work<strong>in</strong>g the organization <strong>in</strong> an evaluation of the Street OutreachWorker Program.Other projects underway <strong>in</strong>clude: 1) work<strong>in</strong>g with local health organizations and the <strong>New</strong><strong>Haven</strong> County Medical Association to establish a <strong>Project</strong> Access <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong> to <strong>in</strong>creaseaccess to specialty care for the un<strong>in</strong>sured; 2) work<strong>in</strong>g with the Teen Pregnancy PreventionCouncil and <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong> Board of Education to better understand the attitudes of <strong>New</strong> <strong>Haven</strong>teens with regard to pregnancy and contraception; and 3) work<strong>in</strong>g with the HealthDepartment and others <strong>in</strong> the state to improve trauma care.Key Contacts: Georg<strong>in</strong>a Lucas, MSW, Deputy Director, (203) 785-6761Marjorie Rosenthal, MD, MPH, Assistant Director, (203) 785-637724
