The goal of the projectwas to help identify, through the eyes and voices of young people directly impacted byyouth gun violence, the root causes and effects of youth gun violence in their lives and inthe city of New Haven. Our data indicate that youth experiences of gun violence are closely tied to the absence ofpositive "opportunity structures” 5 as well as the concept of "social determinants of health."Opportunity structures are factors external to the individual that limit or empower action.Social determinants of health are societal conditions that affect health and can potentiallybe altered by social and health policies and programs. 6 They are largely shaped by thedistribution of money and power and account for the health inequities—avoidabledifferences in health status—among people. 7The youth voice captured through this research offers new insight for public officials, organizations serving New Haven youth and New Haven citizens on the social and economicinfluences resulting in youth gun violence.
