Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition Sept. 30 - Oct. 6, 2012NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANANDWhen Das, my nephew and scion of the Royal familythrough his father Chirakkal T. Sreedharan Nair (themaster Kalarippayatu exponent of Kerala and the authorof the book published by Westland) told me that thepresent titular ruler of Chirakkal Kovilakam, Sri KeralaVarma Thamburan, is a permanent resident of ShanthiColony, hardly two km from my home, my own royal bloodthirsted for a pow-vow with royalty, because my maternalgrandfather was a Rajah, of a tiny princedom AduthalaKovilagam, a few miles from Chirakkal. My mother was the last of the Rajah’s generous productof 6 children to my beautiful grandmother whose bewitchingbeauty conquered the narrow wall of caste, leaving me,my granny’s grandson, to inherit the royal dark skin ofKerala Varma. I have the proud privilege of inheriting theroyal epidermis, says my mother who was probably 4years old when the old bloke left for a meeting with Yamaleaving the Nair scions impoverished. The link between the Royalty thus established, I wantedto meet the present head of the Chirakkal Kovilagam, nowa mere name after Indira abolished Royalty, of whomnephew Das spoke in glowing terms. The reigning RajahSri Kerala Varma, Valia Thamburan, is a retired PhysicalDirector of a College in Madras, (Presidency College, Ithink he said) and that cemented our connection further, because I had been a Presidentian, years beforeyoung muscles did not prevail over the skulled grey matterthat now leads to bus-wars.Nephew Das and I were before Royalty and Mrs.Royalty. As is mandated by the Constitution of India, oneof their sons is in Obamaland and the other is in Bangalore. His copious grey hair and walrus moustache and therobust physique and a firm handshake, my debut withroyalty, made me wonder whether my maternal grandfatherwas similarly endowed! Das, who was in Chirakkalthen, when I expressed a desire to visit my grandfather’spalace, took Lakshmi and me in his car to Aduthala butthere was not even a photograph of the elusive Rajah oreven an oil painting. So all I can imagine is that mymaternal royal grandfather must have been a handsomestrapper like me!My day was made. Thank you, Das.Feeding in tandemBy Our Staff ReporterWhile one goat nibbles on leaves, another rests its frontfeet on the other one’s back to enable it to reach a bunch ofleaves.
