Generals<br />

Why electronic ballasts?<br />

The electronic ballast became the standard in the lighting industry. It<br />

leads to significant energy and money savings in nearly every application.<br />

The lamp operation is flicker free and the ballast produces virtually<br />

no noise or hum.<br />

The incoming 50/60 Hz power (115 or 230 volts) is converted to highfrequency<br />

AC (usually 20 to 40 kHz). This leads to a constant gas<br />

discharge compared to conventional ballasts and prevents cathode<br />

flicker.<br />

<strong>Electronic</strong> ballasts are more efficient than magnetic ballasts in converting<br />

input power to the proper lamp power. The operation of uvlamps<br />

at higher frequencies reduces end losses, resulting in an<br />

overall lamp-ballast system efficacy increase of 15% to 20%.<br />

<strong>Electronic</strong> ballasts are directly interchangeable with magnetic ballasts.<br />

They operate with most of available uv-lamps. Long term<br />

usage has demonstrated the reliability of electronic ballasts.<br />

<strong>Electronic</strong> ballasts that operate two or four lamps at once, are allowing<br />

the use of a single ballast in systems with several lamps. This<br />

reduces installation and field wiring costs. Other advantages are<br />

reduced weight, quieter operation and reduced lamp flicker.<br />

<strong>Electronic</strong> ballasts basically consist of the following functional units:<br />

• filter - EMI-filter to attenuate conducted RF noise<br />

• rectifier<br />

• PFC (power factor correction) - provides sinusoidal line<br />

current<br />

• charging capacitor<br />

• frequency controller (<strong>for</strong> high-frequency conversion)<br />

• power stage<br />

• resonant tank<br />

and also<br />

• fault logic (open-circuit / short-circuit protection)<br />

Instant, rapid or preheat?<br />

There are three modes of operation of the lamps:<br />

� rapid start<br />

� preheat start (-PH)<br />

� instant start (-IS)<br />

Rapid start ballasts<br />

These ballasts are used <strong>for</strong> lamps with four-pin connection.<br />

During startup a short high current pulse is sent to the lamp filament.<br />

This reduces unwanted sputtering of emissive material at the<br />

electrodes.<br />

Compared to instant start ballasts, lamps tend to live longer with<br />

rapid start ballasts, in case of many on-off cycles. So rapid start<br />

ballasts are recommended when the switching cycle <strong>for</strong> the lamps<br />

is more than three times per day.<br />

During operation current is flowing through the lamps filament. The<br />

electrodes of the lamps must fit with this ballast type.<br />

Preheat start ballasts (-PH)<br />

These ballasts are also used <strong>for</strong> lamps with four-pin connection.<br />

Preheat ballasts provide a preheat current at the filaments that<br />

allows the electrode to heat up be<strong>for</strong>e ignition. During the preheat<br />

interval, voltage across the lamp drops to a level that reduces the<br />

unwanted glow current. The ballast applies sufficient voltage to the<br />

electrodes, long enough <strong>for</strong> the electrode to reach the emission<br />

temperature to prevent lamp ignition be<strong>for</strong>e the electrodes are<br />

heated up.<br />

After the end of programmed time <strong>for</strong> preheating, the ballast applies<br />

a voltage across the lamp to ignite it with minimal loss of emissive<br />

material. This optimizes the lifetime of the lamp.<br />

These ballasts are intended <strong>for</strong> applications with many switch on<br />

cycles.<br />

We offer preheat start ballasts on request <strong>for</strong> lamps with a<br />

minimum power of 200W (see the “PH“ in the type name).<br />

Instant start ballasts (-IS)<br />

These ballasts are used <strong>for</strong> lamps with two-pin connection (see the<br />

“IS“ in the type name).<br />

Instant start ballasts ignite lamps by applying high voltage across<br />

the lamp during setup. The high voltage typically ignites the lamp<br />

immediatly. These ballasts do not heat the electrodes.<br />

Instant start ballasts should be used <strong>for</strong> continously lamp operation<br />

with less than three switches per day. The advantage is the lower<br />

wiring ef<strong>for</strong>t compared to four-pin connection.<br />
