Keep your Home Safe and Healthy while it is VacantAre you a snowbird and spend your winters south of the border? Are you away at your cottage everyweekend? If your home is vacant for short. or extended periods, here are some helpful hints tokeep it safe and healthy in your absence:• A vacant house should be visited two to three times a week and directly after any majorstorms or power outages.• In winter, keep the driveway and entrances clear of snow.• Always keep some lights on, inside and out, and empty the mailbox regularly. Nothing says "we are not at home" likean overflowing mailbox.• Consider an alarm system if you do not already have one. Alarm systems can be quite sophisticated and can includevideo surveillance and monitoring for water leakage and fire, however, they should not replace regular visual inspections.• Maintain a low but even heat throughout your home in winter.• Do not keep blinds fully closed for extended periods as it may create condensation and mildew on windows.Talk to your insurance company about your homeowners policy and what they may require you to do to protect your homeand your insurance converge if your home will be vacant for any extended period.Contributed by Carol Burke, owner of Burke Reality, a Property Management and Real Estate Brokerage Company. If you drink that’s your business,if you want to quit, we at AA can help youbulk barn390 Topsail Road, St. John’s - 745-701022 Gibson Drive, Mount Pearl - 747-717130 White Rose Drive, St. John’s - 754-584213 www.thewellnessguide.com

Let’s Be in the ListeningBonnie Lundrigan M. Ed.“Inner guidance is heard like soft music in the night bythose who have learned to listen.”....Vernon HowardWhat a fascinating year 2013 has been! An intense year ofamazing joy and deep loss.It began with a trip to New York with girlfriends. On the wayI visited Toronto and a dear friend of mine who I’ve knownand loved for many years went into a coma and died withbrain cancer four days later.I was in Israel with a group of people and my beloved teacherDebbie Ford in October 2012 studying and having fun. Justafter our return her body developed a second cancer andshe died in February 2013. I attended her funeral with 400people who also loved her many you may know, MarianneWilliams, Deepak Chopra, her coaching family and friends. It was truly a celebration of life.In June I had the honor of supporting another beautiful localwoman named Karen who was in palliative care through hertransition from this world. Her daughter, best friend and Italked, listened, and prayed. It was sacred and beautiful justlike she was.During a nine day Mindfulness Based Stress Reductiontraining course that I participated in this past June, I met awonderful new soul sister. She had a life threateningexperience with her health and came through strong andhealthy. We just celebrated her birthday! In November, I co-led a team to Guatemala with eight fellowNewfoundlanders to build a classroom. Relief anddevelopment work have been part of my journey since mythirties. My co-lead and I became wonderful friends, youknow the kind you can pick up the phone and call for a chatand you know she will be there to listen and support you withany of life’s challenges and joys. The year 2013 ended by witnessing and listening to thesadness and pain of close friends who lost their nephew tosuicide. The funeral was a beautiful celebration of his life. The ceremony was also permeated by deep pain, loss andsuffering for those who knew and loved him. His preciouslife ended so early. Suicide cannot be explained orunderstood. It is a result of the victim wanting to end thepain and suffering they experience from debilitating boutsof severe depression that tortures the mind and thought. Itis as real as cancer or any other life threatening disease, wejust can’t see the medical tubes or hair loss. We can onlywitness sometimes, and in hindsight, the signs of life’s lightbeing lost in a medical condition. Each one of us is here and alive in 2014 in this magicalplace called Newfoundland. Let’s work together to listen towhat we personally need to give ourselves and treatourselves with love and kindness. When we do this it givesothers permission to do the same. There are 525958 minutes available in a year ofopportunities to be in the listening. Sometimes It Takes TwoDana Warren"Out of the strain of the doing, into thepeace of the done" .Julia Louise WoodruffThe other day I took a bag to the shoe repair shop. This isa daypack that I’ve had for years. Most of its life has beenspent down near the shoes in my upstairs closet. It’s agreat bag – the perfect size for your computer, a hike, alittle shop at the grocery store, or a light trek downtown. Why then, did it sit for almost the whole six years of its lifein the bottom of a closet? Cause the… ready for this .… thezipper was broken. I must’ve picked it up twenty times, forgetting the zipper, and then saying “Gotta get that fixed”or “Should take that down to get it repaired.” Or worse, cursing it and then tossing it aside. I couldn’t even countthe number of times I thought about getting it fixed andthe complicated scenario my mind could create as to whynot now. It’s been through three household moves. I can’tthrow out a great bag, yet I can let it add to the clutter inmy life, no problem. The other day I was headed downtown to run a few errandsand I grabbed the bag, “Argghh!” I said. “The (insertmumbling words) zipper is broken!” I picked it up,determined to escape the trap of my psyche, and decided once and for all to stop the storyline of the bag that I couldn’tseem to get fixed. I went directly to the Modern Shoe Hospital. I walked in, laid the bag on the counter and told the storyof where it has spent most of its life. The fine fellow on the counter took the bag out of my hands, did his magic and twominutes later I was on my way with a smile and a new bag. Free of charge. Why am I telling you this? Because, an action that took TWO MINUTES, has sucked at least twenty-four hours out of mylife. Most people have difficulty guess-timating how long two minutes actually is. We tend to greatly overestimate the time itreally takes to return a phone call, pay a bill, clear the dining room table or respond to an email. On the other hand wecan spend hours fretting about the things that we have to do and get lost in the ruminating trap of the mind. You’d beastounded at how many things you can accomplish in two minutes. And subsequently the release and sense ofaccomplishment you feel when you get to it.I am a firm believer of accomplishing little tasks, the ‘one bite ata time’ approach to life. It all adds up. My words of advice? If ittakes two minutes, do it. No ‘ifs’ ‘ands’ or ‘buts.’ Don’t stuff itaway, save it up or write a thesis about it. Don’t sit and ponder,or, more likely, agonize and wring your hands. Don’t tell yourfriends about it or try and make your partner do it. If a task takestwo minutes, then get to it and free the mental space. Full stop.Time yourself, you will be amazed! Ultimately, it’s the little thingsaccomplished that free us in these days of too much stuff onour plates and in our minds. Slowly but surely you will giveyourself free time to contemplate things that are moreimportant. Clear the clutter!I did a dance up the sidewalk. Parenting Tips in Hindsight!I attended a baby shower a few years ago where the hostess had arrangedfor the guests to sign a memory book for the mom - to- be. A request wasmade to also contribute a wise parenting tip if they desired. Most of themature guests were eager to share their parenting lessons and declaredhaving learned most of these the 'hard way."Here are the top ten tips submitted:1 - Always speak to your child in a soft voice. It doesn't matter if you are praising or disciplining.2 - Don't try to be your child's friend at the expense of being their much needed parent.3 - Give constructive feedback rather than lecturing a child when he mis-behaves.4 - For picky eaters, always give your child a choice in foods. Instead of saying "what do youwant for lunch" say "do you want soup or a sandwich for lunch today?"5 - Never let the day end without saying " I love you." Especially on challenging days!6 - Make time for just talking. Talk about anything they want to talk about.7 - Eat meals together as a family whenever possible.8 - Really learn to listen to what your child is trying to say to you.9 - Talk to your child about changes like going to a baby sitter well in advance.10 - My contribution was based on the Four Steps of Discipline from Barbara Coloroso's bookKid's are Worth It which is still highly recommended to parents today.• Show kids what they have done.• Give them ownership of the problem.• Give them options for solving the problem.• Leave their dignity intact.www.thewellnessguide.comCheck out the Business Profile Page*See sample Business Profile Page on page 24 *Annual Subscription $159.95Includes the following:• Online Business Profile Page(full page with images)• Web Listing• Hot link to your websitewww.thewellnessguide.com16

Volunteering - A Win-Win SituationWe all know someone who makes time in their busy lives to help others, but did you knowthat it also comes with the great health benefits...for the person helping too? It's true volunteering has been shown to:• Reduce pain• Lessen depression• Enhance your sense of belonging, and may even• Lengthen your life.Volunteer for Your HeartTwo uplifting studies about volunteering and improved health, more specifically, heart health have been published. Theseinvolved individuals on different ends of the age spectrum. In June 2013, the journal Psychology and Aging published results from a study of over 1100 people older than 50 who werefollowed for 4 years. While everyone had normal blood pressure at the beginning of the trial, those who volunteered for 200hours or more during the preceding 12 months were 40% less likely to develop high blood pressure. Interestingly, volunteeringat least 200 hours per year was also associated with increased physical activity and a greater sense of wellbeing.Another study of roughly 100 Canadian teenagers, published in JAMA Pediatrics online in February and then in print in April, showed that only 10 weeks of volunteering improved the cholesterol levels, body mass indexes (BMI), and markers ofinflammation for the altruistic high school students compared with their peers who did not get the opportunity to performacts of community service. The teens were randomly assigned either to volunteer by reading to younger students each weekfor several months or to a wait list control. (This means that both groups of students had the desire to volunteer.)Evidently, that sense of "feel good" that we get from doing good is real! And as Dr. Hannah Schreier, the lead author of the JAMA Pediatrics article, and her colleagues write, "The idea that individualswho help others incur health benefits themselves suggests a novel approach to improving health while simultaneouslypromoting greater civic orientation in our society."17 www.thewellnessguide.com

The Proof is in the PostureClare Barry BA, B.Ed., M.EdHave you seen photosof beautiful Africanwomen walking with abasket of goodsbalanced perfectly atoptheir heads? Theymove effortlessly astheir bodies seem tostretch up into the skyto bear their burdenwith pride! As a child,my mother insisted on good posture and often threatenedconsequences to encourage that goal of perfect posture. Mymother was seriously on to something; when balanced, thebody’s movements are spare and graceful. Posture is bothfunctional and important! In decades past, people used their muscles to full capacityjust meeting the demands of daily life. Ordinary activity wassufficient to keep their bodies balanced and functioningproperly. Everyday activities promoted good general health, easy mobility, good digestion and effective sleep. Today, modern, labour-saving technologies reduce the need tomove, leaving us with movement patterns that areincreasingly off-line and faulty. The effects of living withrestricted movement patterns are visible in our bodies andin the increase of chronic pain conditions in our society.Martha Graham, the mother of modern dance once said,“The body does not lie”. That is equally true in the treatmentof physical injuries. Our bodies tell our life story in the way wehold ourselves. Pete Egoscue, the creator of the EgoscueMethod of postural analysis, recognized this. His methodfocuses on 'design' movement, the movement we were bornwith - the motion which occurs when muscle function isbalanced side to side, front to back and gravity istransmitted uniformly through all the weight-bearing joints. Many exercise systems value balance and motor control;what is the Egoscue difference? The Egoscue methodbegins with the individual and captures pictures of the bodystanding at rest: front, side, back and side. The informationfrom these images is entered into a software programdesigned to identify the off-line and faulty components ofmovement from which a template of exercises is developedto remedy the postural limitations.side to side, front to back and vertical loading anomaliesidentified in assessment. E-cises involve the whole body. The Egoscue e-cises are a series of positions, stretches andstrengthening exercises that are designed to restore normalmuscle length, tension and strength. While many of the e-cises are used in other exercise systems, it is the selectionand order of exercise that defines an Egoscue menu.- Technique is critical to a successful menu, and for thisreason coaching is recommended.- The e-cises are simple to do and need no specialequipment.- A typical e-cise menu will take 40 to 50 minutes tocomplete; shorter programs are created when time is anissue.- A typical menu is periodically modified over a 12 to 16week period to effectively address observed dysfunctionsand compensations.Typical clients are those with musculo-skeletal pain, chronic, acute, result of injury, no known injury, etc; the commonthread is that they have pain. Clients are committed toimproving their quality of life, health and fitness and theyare willing to dedicate up to 1 hour per day to accomplishthis. A growing client group is elite athletes who seek toimprove performance by correcting basic movement faults. If you find yourself dealing with an injury that persists, consider having a full-body postural assessment that takesinto consideration the natural movements of your body. Torepeat Martha Graham’s wise words, “The body does notlie”. The proof is in the posture.Clare Barry, BA, B.Ed., M.Ed. is coownerand manager of Avalon LaserHealth, a multidisciplinary healthclinic that specializes in thetreatment of physical pain withlaser therapy. A retired teacher, sheis inspired by a passion for healthand wellness and humbled by thetenacity of clients who overcomegreat obstacles to live their livesfully – without pain. She can be reached atlivewithoutpain.ca or phone709-753-0155.Faulty movement patterns may be fixed (non-reversible) orcompensatory (reversible). As it is frequently the site ofcompensation which causes the pain, it is important thatassessment and exercise selection consider the whole body.Egoscue exercises (e-cises) target both compensatory anddysfunctional components, and are chosen to address the19 www.thewellnessguide.com

adrenal function to be strong and balanced in order to allowour minds and bodies to handle day to day functioning andto protect the body's response to injury and emergency.AdrenalFatigueby Dr Kathleen Mercer B Sc NDSome signs to be aware of when the adrenal glands are tooengaged are:• A fullness in the chest• Shortness of breath• A feeling of being wired, difficulty sleeping, flushes ofpanic or sweating without cause.• Often these symptoms can turn into, or be mixed with, periods of extreme fatigue, poor concentration and taskcompletion, emotional apathy and low sex drive.Physical signs over time can also be excessive sweating andweight gain, especially around the waste. When the body isin stress response, the digestive system is not workingeffectively therefore we are storing calories instead ofprocessing them properly. If you suspect that you may be experiencing some of thesesigns, you should see your Doctor to get a good round ofblood work and a physical exam. Once we know that thereis nothing more serious going on, then we can start toaddress strengthening and nourishing the adrenal systemback to a health.Treatment ideas may include some of the following:The adrenal glands (2 ) are walnut sized glands that sit ontop of our kidneys. One of their major jobs is to manage thebodies stress response. When we experience stress, theadrenal system will engage and the adrenal glands willexpress hormones, one of them being adrenaline, which willhelp our body and mind handle the stress that we areencountering. Once the stressful event has passed, thenother hormones will be expressed to bring the body functionback to normal. This adrenal response under healthycircumstances will allow for our muscles to contract, oureyesight and mind be sharp, our breathing become shallowand effective, our blood flow to change, and this is all normaland good. However, in today's world what is happening isthat people are staying in this stress response mode for toolong. This may be due to our busy lives, over working, notenough down time, financial stresses, etc. When thishappens and our bodies are in stress mode too long, thenthe body becomes out of balance. We end up having toomuch adrenaline in our bodies which often at first leads tofeelings of stress and anxiety and a feeling of beingoverwhelmed. The later stages usually present as anexhaustion and fatigue when the adrenal response is underfunctioning and we no longer respond to stressful triggersand this puts us in a situation of concern. We need our• weekly acupuncture for 4-6 weeks• herbs like liquorice, holy basil, borage, eleutherococcus, astragalus, ginseng and B vitamins• reducing stimulants, especially coffee. Every timewe drink coffee an artificial stimulation of the adrenalglands occurs. Over time this is exhausting.• Stress reduction techniques like breathing exercisesand meditation. Yoga is a super relaxation techniquewhich also has specific postures to nourish the adrenalsystem.• cardiovascular exercise• avoidance of all processed sugars.Consider seeing a Naturopathic Doctor to help put togethera plan that will address your individual needs to rebuild ahealthy adrenal system. To contact Kathleen Mercer regarding any health concern or to discussthe above recommendations, please call 709-722-4232 at Pine BudChiropractic Clinic, 25 Pine Bud Road, St. John’s.21 www.thewellnessguide.com

Sugar AlcoholsA Possible Hidden Culprit of GI Distressby Tara K Antle BSc.AHN, RHN, RNCPMedia, fads and marketing may influence how we viewcertain food items. Sugar is a huge topic that has beenfocused on over the last decade. Sugar Free or No AddedSugar products are easily perceived as being healthier thanregular products. Have you ever heard of a sugarreplacement and thickening agent known as a sugaralcohol?Sugar alcohols became popular to the Canadian marketback in the late 1980's in sugar free chewing gum. Withsugar alcohols we taste the sweetness, minus an aftertaste. However the chemical is not absorbable and may causehavoc in the intestinal tract. Any amount of sugar alcoholconsumed over 8 grams can cause GI distress, includinggas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, cramping, stomachextension and loud gurgling noises. Pretty nasty to say theleast.Sugar alcohols are found in products that claim No AddedSugar. They are sometimes listed in grams on the nutritionlabel, beneath carbohydrates, fibre and sugar. Interestingly, manufactures do not have to list sugar alcohols on the foodlabel, however you can identify them in the ingredients list. The word alcohol ends in “ol” and for the most part, so doesa sugar alcohol. Sorbitol, Maltitol and Xylitol are all examplesof sugar alcohols. Many products considered to be “diabetic friendly" containlarge amounts of sugar alcohol. Keep in mind that thecompany decides the serving size on a food label. Forexample, a food label might indicate that there are 4 gramsof sugar alcohol per 4 pieces of small candy. It seems to fitthe bill of less than 8 grams, however we generally eat moreof the product because we view it as healthier since it doesnot contain sugar. If we were to eat four pieces this morning, another four this afternoon, four tomorrow and four the dayafter that, we would easily have 16 grams of sugar alcoholin our system and may feel GI discomfort by experiencingthe above mentioned symptoms.Sugar alcohols build up in our system and it may takeseveral days to clear the chemical from our bodies.Examples of food and beverage products containing sugaralcohols found in most grocery stores include: No AddedSugar candy, cookies and baked goods; Fat Free, No AddedSugar pre-made puddings found in the dairy case; No AddedSugar bottled fruit; No Added Sugar ice cream and bottledwater that’s marketed as a sugar free health supplement.Play food detective and think “outside the box” with foodlabelling. If a product is marketed as not containing sugar, ask yourself “If sugar is not present in this product, where isthe sweet taste coming from?” The answer is usually froma chemical, such as a sugar alcohol or other artificialsweeteners.Studies have shown that people who consume sugar freeproducts tend to weigh more. The reason being is that theseproducts increase our appetites later in the day.Obviously, consuming large amounts of refined sugars areunhealthy as well. Be weary of foods and drinks marketedas containing All Natural Sugar. It’s usually an indication ofexcessive amounts of hidden sugar. Choose healthieroptions in moderation and respect portion control. Healthieroptions to sweeten foods and beverages naturally include;100% pure maple syrup, black strap molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg and pure vanilla extract.Personally, I’d prefer to take a small “hit of sugar”, that mybody can break down and absorb as opposed to a 'hit ofchemical' that will cause havoc to my GI system!
