He is also Professorof Indigenous Development in The University of Auckland’s Faculty ofArts. Charles is a musician and researcher with in<strong>te</strong>rests in the creativepo<strong>te</strong>ntial of mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), particularly as thisrela<strong>te</strong>s to the whare tapere (traditional houses of performing arts), thewhare wānanga (traditional institutions of higher learning) and indigeneity. Charles is a formerDir<strong>ec</strong>tor of Gradua<strong>te</strong> Studies and Research at Te Wānanga o-Raukawa, Ōtaki.Daniel Patrick | Ex<strong>ec</strong>utive Dir<strong>ec</strong>torDaniel Patrick was Business Manager for NPM from 2008 until early2011, when he b<strong>ec</strong>ame Ex<strong>ec</strong>utive Dir<strong>ec</strong>tor. His role is to dir<strong>ec</strong>t andplan the Centre’s business activities, including contracting, financialoperations, resources planning, risk management and managingthe Centre's investment portfolios. Daniel holds a Bachelor's degreein Applied Sciences and a Mas<strong>te</strong>r's degree in Health Sciences withhonours. He came to the Centre having been the Research ProgrammeManager for the Social Statistics Research Group, and establishing the Centre of Methods andPolicy Applications in the Social Sciences (COMPASS) at The University of Auckland.Dr Daniel Hikuroa | Research Dir<strong>ec</strong>torNgāti Maniapoto, Tainui, Te ArawaDr Daniel Hikuroa was appoin<strong>te</strong>d Research Dir<strong>ec</strong>tor in 2011. Hedir<strong>ec</strong>ts the Centre’s Research Plan, provides leadership in indigenousdevelopment research, while maintaining his own personal researchprogramme. Joe’s research examines oral r<strong>ec</strong>ordings inthe Māori language of kaumātua from the Rongomaiwahine-Kahungunuregion of Hawke’s Bay. Formerly Dean of Māori Studies at the Eas<strong>te</strong>rn Institu<strong>te</strong> of T<strong>ec</strong>hnology,Joe led the establishment of its degree programme in Māori language and culture, the campusmarae and his tribe’s radio station Radio Kahungunu, which he still heads.Dr Marilyn Tangi Ina McPherson | Senior Research Fellow:Research PerformanceTe Rarawa, Te Aupōuri, Ngāti KahuDr Marilyn McPherson's (also known as Dr Brewin) role is to conduc<strong>te</strong>xcellent research relevant to the NPM Research Plan and help monitorthe Centre’s research. Her three current research in<strong>te</strong>rests are aroha inresearch; trends in Māori injury prevention and safety; and San FilipoSyndrome. BusinessMarie-Chanel Berghan | Business ManagerTe Rarawa, Ngāti Wai, Ngāti Maniapoto, Te ArawaMarie-Chanel Berghan looks af<strong>te</strong>r the Centre'sfinancial, contract and operations (physical resourcesand infrastructure) management. Marie-Chanel has aPostgradua<strong>te</strong> Diploma in Business Administration andin Business, Māori Development. Before joining the centre, she was theWhakapiki Ake Proj<strong>ec</strong>t Manager at The University of Auckland’s Facultyof Medical and Health Sciences for five years and prior to that, a Proj<strong>ec</strong>tAdministration Manager at Hewlett Packard.Premika Sirisena | Centre CoordinatorPremika Sirisena has been with NPM since its inceptionin 2002. She facilita<strong>te</strong>s and coordina<strong>te</strong>s the Centre’swork by providing administrative and operationalsupport. Premika has legal qualifications from SriLanka and the Uni<strong>te</strong>d Kingdom, and gained ex<strong>te</strong>nsiveexperience working in management and marketing in Sri Lanka and theUni<strong>te</strong>d Kingdom before moving to New Zealand.Honorine Franswah | Centre AdministratorHonorine Franswah assists with all the administrativefunctions of NPM, including r<strong>ec</strong>eption and s<strong>ec</strong>retarialduties. Honorine holds a Bachelor of Arts and bringssubstantial administrative experience from nearly 20years involvement in the manufacturing s<strong>ec</strong>tor in India.More r<strong>ec</strong>ently she provided administrative support at The University ofAuckland prior to joining the Centre.Sys<strong>te</strong>ms DevelopmentDr Tim West-Newman | Sys<strong>te</strong>ms DevelopmentManagerTim West-Newman develops and implementsadvanced t<strong>ec</strong>hnical business solutions includingwebsi<strong>te</strong>s for NPM. Moving to New Zealand in 2007,Helen previously worked in the Research and En<strong>te</strong>rprise Office at theUniversity of Otago, advising on research funding.Gretchen Carroll | Communications CoordinatorGretchen Carroll organises and prepares variousNPM communications, including the annual report, theCentre’s websi<strong>te</strong>s, research summaries and marketingma<strong>te</strong>rial. She is also the editor of Te Pūwānanga andwelcomes readers to get in touch and send in storiesand photo submissions (email comms@maramatanga.ac.nz). Gretchenhas worked in journalism, communications and PR for more than 10 years– most r<strong>ec</strong>ently at Cambridge University Press and prior to that, she wasa Communications Manager at AUT University.
