A Message from the PresidentIt is a pleasure to present the <strong>2009</strong> <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong>.It has been a remarkable year for <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Thanks to the contributionsof our Board of Trustees, faculty and staff, we have continued to strengthen the<strong>College</strong> in a myriad of areas, building upon our core mission of providing anaffordable, high quality education to our students.<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> is experiencing an exciting period of progress. Several initiatives thatwere launched in <strong>2009</strong> have taken root and have exhibited solid success this year.The Personalized Achievement Contract (PACT) has expanded to include morethan half of the <strong>2009</strong> incoming freshmen class, which has exceeded our goal.Our new Library Learning Commons was completed this fall and now providesmore efficient and streamlined access to services for students in one centrallocation. Enrollment has grown to be the largest freshmen class on our fivecampuses in a decade.Within this report you will read about the highlights of the past year. As we lookto the future, our direction is guided by the Five-Year Strategic Plan <strong>2009</strong> – 2014,shaped by our core values:n a belief in the potential of human beings to transform themselves through aquality education;n a commitment to an inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity ofits members;n an understanding of the value of a liberal arts education in the developmentof intellectual capacities, ethics, diverse perspectives and the free exchangeof ideas;n a recognition of the role of faculty scholarship to the development ofquality pedagogies and research; andn an understanding that through our interactions, our service and ouroutreach to students we make a distinctive impact.As president, I am greatly enthused by what I see at <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong>: a facultydedicated to delivering quality education; a staff that is committed to excellence;a student body that is motivated and focused on achievement; and extraordinarilygenerous donors. <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> Alumnus Anthony Mullen ‘02 Named <strong>2009</strong>National Teacher of the YearAnthony Mullen ‘02 was named <strong>2009</strong> National Teacher of the Year and honored byPresident Obama at a White House Ceremony this April. A special education teacherat the ARCH School, an alternative education branch of Greenwich High School(Greenwich, CT), Mullen he earned MS degrees in both elementary education andspecial education at <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong>.A Bronx native, Mullen served as a New York City policeofficer for 20 years. Working with troubled teenagers, herealized that many were destined for prison unless theyreceived the benefits of a quality education and positiverole models. Determined to provide troubled youngpeople with the crucial help they need, he enrolled in<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> to obtain the graduate degrees in educationrequired for him to make a contribution towardssubstantially bettering the lives of at-risk youth.Photo credit: Ron SachsThe National Teacher of the Year Program, a project ofthe Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), isone of the oldest and most prestigious national honorsprograms that focus public attention on excellence inteaching. <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> Holds Inaugural Bronx Leadership DinnerOn December 3, 150 guests gathered at <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s Bronx campus to celebratethe Inaugural Bronx Leadership Dinner. As part of a larger effort to deepen andstrengthen the connection in the Bronx community, <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> was privileged tohonor four of its outstanding advocates. Theyare Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.;Rita DiMartino, vice chairman of the boardof Bronx Lebanon Hospital; Serafin Mariel,founder of New York National Bank andchairman of the New York YankeesStadium Community Benefits Fund; andBishop Ronald Bailey, senior pastor of LoveGospel Assembly. students<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> Expands PACTA Revolutionary Student EngagementProgram<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s breakthrough PersonalizedAchievement Contract (PACT) program, a one-of-itskind in the U.S., has experienced tremendous growththis fall. From a beta group of 50 first-time, full-timefreshmen in spring <strong>2009</strong>, to more than 500 enrolledin the fall <strong>2009</strong> incoming class, the program nowoffers more than half of the first-time, full-timefreshmen class one-on-one professional mentoringunlike any other college in the nation. The PACTbreaks down traditional institutional silos andprovides students with personal, customized andongoing attention and planning to ensure successduring their college careers and beyond. The team joined4,000 students from 300 universities from around the world in the simulation ofvarious committees and discussion of key issues of the United Nations. <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong>has participated in the conference for the past 22 years, making it among the top 30schools in the country for continuous participation. Additionally, <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> isan NGO (non-governmental organization) associated with the department of PublicInformation of the United Nations.Technology Upgrades in the ClassroomIn keeping with the latest technology, new “Smart” classrooms have been installed onall five campuses. These classrooms have been upgraded with the latest technology,including LCD projection, Internet connectivity, DVD/VCR equipment, andSympodium interactive monitors, a pen-equipped computer monitor that allowsusers to write electronic notes on the computer screen for projection.<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> Named Military FriendlySchool for 2010G.I. Jobs magazine announced that <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> has been named a Military Friendly<strong>College</strong> for 2010. This designation ranks <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> in the top 15 percent ofcolleges and universities nationwide for military students. <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> Adds Men’s And Women’sLacrosse for <strong>2009</strong>-2010 SeasonUnder the direction of head coaches Steve Manitta (men)and Francesca DeLorenzo (women), <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong>Athletics added men’s and women’s lacrosse that willcompete in the competitive East Coast Conferencebeginning with the spring 2010 season. Under Manittaand assistant coach Jordan Levine, a Major LeagueLacrosse all-star, the 2010 men’s team started theirinaugural season with a squad of 32 student-athleteshailing from all over New York State and New Jersey.Members of the women’s lacrosse team duringfall practiceTwelve Mavericks Receive DII ADAAcademic Achievement AccoladesIn August <strong>2009</strong>, 12 <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> student-athletes received2008-09 Division II Athletics Directors Association (DII ADA)Academic Achievement Awards presented by WeatherPORT.The Academic Achievement Awards recognizes the academicaccomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level. InJune <strong>2009</strong>, 35 student-athletes were named to the East CoastConference (ECC) Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the 2008-09 academic year. Six hundred twenty-eight student-athletescomprise this year’s Honor Roll, awarded to student-athleteswho earn a 3.25 GPA or better in a given academic year, withrepresentation from all ten member institutions.Assistant Men’s Lacrosse Coach JordanLevine Named to MLL All-Star Game<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> assistant men’s lacrosse coach JordanLevine was selected to play in the eighth annual MajorLeague Lacrosse (MLL) All-Star Game. <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> Alumni Return to Hoop It UpOn January 31, more than 50 alumni and family members, former coaches, staffmembers, and friends returned to <strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s Dobbs Ferry campus for itsannual Alumni Basketball Day. A fun-filled alumni game was held in between theMavericks’ women’s and men’s varsity doubleheader versus Molloy in the newlyrenovated gymnasium.Ralph Smith ’76 was named Co-Most Valuable Player for his sharp-shooting, alongwith Jessikah McKenzie ’03 and her dazzling display on the court. United Nations Ambassadors from Ecuador and New Zealand on CampusIn partnership with the United Nations (UN) Ambassador’s Club,<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> hosted events that brought the Ambassadors fromEcuador and New Zealand to the Dobbs Ferry campus, providingextraordinary opportunities for dialogue amongst distinguished UNambassadors and the college community in a panel discussion format.In the inaugural panel discussion held in April, Ambassador MariaEspinosa and Ambassador Ahmad Kamal discussed “Ecuador in itsRegion and in the World,” exploring the Republic of Ecuador andits relationship to the United States and its neighbors. The role ofLatin America in global politics, its emerging trends, and likely futurescenarios were also discussed. Ambassador Maria Espinosa is thePermanent Representative of Ecuador to the UN, and former ForeignMinister of Ecuador.In the second panel discussion held in October, Ambassador JimMcLay and Ambassador Kamal discussed “New Zealand in its Regionand in the World.” The discussion provided insight into New Zealand’srelationship with its neighbors and the United States, and its role inthe global arena. These children, the class of2023, received a piggy bank and 23 pennies to starttheir college savings, were read The Cat in the Hatin the new Library Learning Commons and had funactivities in the gymnasium with Coach Steve Manitta.Assistant Professor Pat Feaster, EdD, organized theevent with the aim of putting college into the mindsof children at an early age, and to encourage theirparents to foster this interest.<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> Receives $3.5 Million New York StateHECAP Grant<strong>Mercy</strong> <strong>College</strong> has been awarded a $3.5 million grant from the Board of the NewYork State Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program (HECap) to supportrenovations to the college’s main campus in Dobbs Ferry. The funding supportsrenovations that are vital to the <strong>College</strong>’s continuing efforts to improve and enhanceservices to students, as well as provide additional space for expanded academicprograms.
