Congratulations to SimonDay and Alan Pickard who have gone solo and toTony Cooke for his Silver C duration. lP.N.ULSTER & SHORTSThere hasn't been much .to relieve the monotonyof circuit bashing at this dog-end of a rotten year- except gales and storm force winds whichhave stopped all flying and threatened to layScrab tower flat. But at least we can now watchunflyable weather panoramically and curse in,comfort as our 'landlord, the Ulster Flying Club, recently opened a large and lavish clubhouse toreplace its (ormer wartime shack. We've doubled our strength on the distaff side, when Twy Miller soloed some weeks ago and endedMonica Galloway's distinction of being NorthernIn;land's only current woman glider pilot. There have been several fi,rst soloists .recently butwe are concerned about the low recrllitment ofab-,inilios.'Much excitement on the local streets recentlywhen, afre·r a rope failure, Billy Craig landed theBlanik, with a pupil, in a small fltld nearby. TheB1anik trailer was away for mods so after we'dder~edand car,ted the wings back in a Skylark 2trailer, ,the fuselage was walked a mile or so backalong the public pavements ,to the airfield much >to the astonishment of passing drivers anddelight of the local kids.Jeremy Bryson was away doing his stuff for thebalance of payments in Australia as these noteswere written. On one previous such trip he cameback with a Diamond goal; with our own '74soaring season being an estimated six hours one'day in Apr~I, we ,eagerl.y await 'to hear whether hegot in any bigh-sunlmet gliding.R.R.R.VINTAGEOur Easter rally will be at the South Wales Club.Usk. from March 28-31.ECWORCESl'ERSHIREJot is some time since we appeared in thesecolumns but in s,pite of ,reports in the last issue(hat we have collapsed, the club is flourishing andflying througlJout the year.We share our airstrip with the WarwickshireParachut~Club, a very thriving group, and luanyof t'heir members now glide as well. The currentfleet of gliders in our hangar include a Blanik, T21, a Grunau Baby plus several privately owned"hot ships" and powered aircraft. We are lucky to have what we ·consider is thefinest tug in the business, the Polish Wilga, and ithas had a good record this year. A seCQnd lUg aircraftis, now being rebuilt for next year, so weshouldn't be short of launches.O1ris Buxton, our CFI, keeps his eagle eye onus and our safety record is extremely.good. Membershipis increasing slowly but the dreadfulweather hasn't helped. This year has seen many visitors landing alBickma~ from Sholxlon, Nympsfield andHusbands Bosworth, all claiming various badgesetc. Wc hope they have been made welcome andwill come again.I.NJ.WYCOMBE Al>R PARKAt the end of the 1974 soaring season our totallaunches were 8800 compared witb I ((XX) theyear !;>efore. This Wll$ Cl reasonable achievementconsidering ,the petrol crisis and the generally badweat, her we had last summer. At one time the raiAwas so bad that even when it did clear enough (0fly, the airfield was waterlogged for three daysand we had to operate on the hard runway normallyonly used by the power clubs on the site. One interesting statistic does emerge - hasanyone else noticed wha\' fantastic glidingweather we have had on all but a few Tuesdaysthis year? Our two week expedition to Sultan Ban"didn't produce the hoped for crop of Golds andDiamonds. The longest flight was by DougWalker who achieved an hour in a snow storm. As for personal achievements, our "homegrownpundit", Alastair Kay, completed hisSilver C in 1973, gained his Gold distance lastsumme·r plus his PPL Clnd now has his Gold Cwith a height gain of only 200ft short ofDiamond height. This Wll$ at Portmoak afterbeing driven away from Sulton Ban.k by the badweather.Richard Aldous, having discover,eO how hisglass ship wor·ks, has again been .flashing arounddoing spectacular Ihings and is now at the top ofthe' National Ladder. As only the third largestgliding operation ,in England, it gives us a greatfeeling of satisfaction to whip away lhe Ladderfrom the biggest club!J.M.C.W.YORKSHIREAs usual we ,rook forward to a new soaring seasonwith enthusiasm. Let's hope our fireside plans fOrlonger, faster and higher flights than ever beforedon't fade into the harsh reality of a long, wetsumme.r.The fact that ·there is an economic crisis appearsto have escaped a large number of our syndicatemembers who have found ways and meansof acquiring sleek new gliders for 1975. Those ofus witll wood and glue aircraft would feel quiteashamed 10 open the trailer doors if it were notfor lhe fact thal Mike Carter in the "vintage" K6E managed, top place on lhe club ladder lastyear.Although we continue training and soar, ingflights throughout the winter, many of our memberskeep in louch at this .time of year by altendingour various social funct'kms. The firsl was by Ray Speke, whose intereslin gliding goes back. to the 19305. and thesecond by Yvonne Brilton who re-soloed afterseveral years. Yvonne is our only current sololady but is being .caught up rapidly by more of thegirls. On the MoT side (I prefer to call it "supportservice"), {lur narrow drum winches are provingIhat Ihis is certain'ly a better system than havingscroll gears to contend with, although the winchdrivers have ,to be switched-on to avoid ,(Jile cablecoming off the drum.
