You’veBeenFramedJohn SingletonAyrshire Group Vice ChairAfter beginning my working career in the Post Office, I left tostudy a degree in Business Studies at Glasgow Tech (now theCaledonian University), and it was only in the honours yearthat I selected the labour studies option (partly to avoid themarketing and accountancy options!) which pointed metowards a career in HR - the rest is history!I moved around a bit to begin with, working briefly for aninternational airline, an FE college and a contract cateringcompany, but have been at South Ayrshire Council and itspredecessor for over 17 years now, having started on a 9 monthtemporary contract! I've got a generalist HR role, but spend a lotof time on recruitment, HR systems and restructuring issues.I recently took up a temporary part time lecturing role, teachingan employee relations module on an HRM degree course, andreally enjoyed the challenge of passing on my knowledgeand experience of the theory and practice of ER, in a way whichenthused the students about the importance of the history andcurrent best practice in ER.I owe a lot to my first boss at the Council, who encouraged meto upgrade to full membership as soon as I could, and introducedme to what was then called the Ayrshire Personnel Group.I've been on the Committee of what is now the CIPD AyrshireGeographical Group ever since, including a stint as chair, duringa period of rapid and exciting change, and get a tremendousbuzz (not to mention great personal CPD!) from organisingand facilitating development events for local members andparticipating in WOS Branch activities as a Committee member. Now a Chartered Fellow, I'm also an external moderator forCertificate courses, ensuring that centres and students aremeeting CIPD academic standards of delivery, assessment andachievement, and have given advice to local students andmembers on membership and upgrading.I am convinced that my active involvement with CIPD locallyand nationally has helped my personal, professional and careerdevelopment, and I really enjoy the networking and knowledgegained from attending events – I've formed many lastingfriendships and had the privelege of learning from somefantastically skilled and dedicated practitioners. My advicewould be – get involved! – the more you put in to yourmembership, the more you'll get out of it.If you want to be in this section, please get in touch:clovis.westnews@yahoo.co.uk>>>>>>>>>>>Making the mostof online journalswww.cipd.co.uk/journalsWe’ve selected around 350 full-text journals on a wide rangeof HR, management and training topics to create our onlinejournals collection. To do this, click the slidingtoolbar in ‘Limit your results’ on the right-hand side andthen on ‘update results’.Alternatively, you can click on ‘sort by’ to arrange yourresults by relevance rather than by date.Go to ‘Narrow Results by’ on the left hand side for furthersuggestions on making your results more relevant.AbstractsYou can read short summaries of articles from the results listif you hover your mouse over the magnifying glass icon atthe end of article titles.Extra tip! How to compile your own database of useful articlesFirstly you’ll need to create an account.
