Keep Getting the Lead Out!Loons, swans, cranes andother waterbirds can die fromlead poisoning after swallowinglead fishing sinkers andjigs lost by anglers.Biologists have studied the effects of lead sinkers and jigs onwaterbirds, such as loons and swans, since the 1970s. Their ongoingresearch has documented that, in the Northeast United States andCanada where loons breed, lead sinkers or jigs can account for 10to 50 percent of dead adult loons found by researchers.State law prohibits the use of lead sinkers and jigs in all freshwatersof New Hampshire. The ban prohibits the use of lead sinkersweighing 1 ounce or less and lead jigs less than 1 inch long alongtheir longest axis. The sale of these lead sinkers and jigs isprohibited in the state of N.H.WHAT YOU CAN DO:• Use non-lead sinkers and jigs. It's the law.• Spread the word. Tell other anglers about the problem withlead.• Dispose of old lead sinkers and jigs properly. Drop-offlocations include all N.H. Fish and Game offices andhatcheries.70

It’s up to boaters and anglers to keep nuisance species frominvading New Hampshire’s waters.Exotic Aquatic Plants: Several species of non-nativeaquatic plants invade waterbodies, forming thick underwaterstands of tangled stems and vast mats of vegetationat the water’s surface. They can crowd out important nativewater plants. Always check your boat — both beforeit goes in the water and after. If there are plants attachedto your boat, remove and dispose of them away from any waterbody.Don’t throw them back in the water. It's the law!It is illegal for anyone to transport, import, purchase, propagate, sell ordistribute 14 species of non-native aquatic plants in N.H. Among themare: Eurasian milfoil, variable milfoil, fanwort, purple loosestrife and waterchestnut.Zebra mussels: These non-natives cause numerous problems, including attaching themselves to boat hulls and clogging waterintake systems. Let’s keep zebra mussels out of N.H.DIDYMO: Didymosphenia geminata, a.k.a. "didymo" or "rocksnot," has been discovered in the Connecticut River and its tributaries. If you fish, boat or swim in this river, be sure to disinfect all of youritems before using them elsewhere.
