Hinkley New Nuclear Build NewsBusinesses in South Somersetand the Mendips are poorlyrepresented on the HinkleySupply Chain and risk loosingout on business says theChamber.Somerset Chamber has been working closely with EDFEnergy as it develops its plans to invest in a multi-billionpound new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point overthe next decade.The energy company estimates that the constructionphase will put £100 million per year into the localeconomy during construction and once in operation thiswill result in £40 million per year to boost Somerset’scoffers, but businesses in South Somerset and theMendips could be loosing out as few companies in thisarea have chosen to register.Over 900 Somerset businesses have so far registeredon the supply chain portal. To date 93 local businesseshave benefited from work totalling £19 million in value.A further 65 regional businesses have benefitedfrom contracts valued at £34 million, with local andregional contracts currently exceeding £61 million.Rupert Cox, CEO of the Somerset Chamber commented:“EDF have been clear that they want as many Somersetbusinesses as possible to benefit from contracts tosupply the project. Businesses of all sizes and acrossall sectors should urgently consider signing up atwww.hinkleysupplychain.co.uk. This detail will then be madeavailable to EDF Energy and interested contractors whodeliver the work packages involved.During the building of the proposed new nuclear powerstation it is estimated that the excavation worksnecessary will move 4.2 million cubic metres of rockand soil (4 times the volume of Wembley stadium), thatthe concretereinforcement will beequivalent to 22 Eiffeltowers (150,000 tonnes)and that the weight ofstructural steel used in theconstruction of buildingsand plant will beequivalent to the SydneyBridge (50,000 tonnes).The temporary powersupply required for theconstruction of thepower station is likely tobe similar to the powerrequirement of 28,000homes (35 MW).EDF Energy expects to employ around 25,000 people tobuild the power station and associated developmentsduring the construction period, and anticipates creatingat least 5,000 jobs for Somerset people and manymore jobs through the supply chain. Once built thepower station will require 900 permanent jobs duringoperation. In excess of £6 million is being invested inskills and training in Somerset to prepare the workforcefor the project.Locals will benefit from plans for a temporaryJetty and road infrastructure improvementsThe approved 500 metre-long temporary jetty will allowsignificant volumes of construction materials to bedelivered by sea, as part of EDF Energy’s transportstrategy of minimising traffic on local roads. One seavessel alone will avoid up to 250 heavy goods vehiclesusing the local road network.Plans for the Cannington Bypass have been broughtforward with work to begin mid 2013 (subject toplanning approval early 2013), and plans to install a £3million traffic management system, will help tominimise the impact for local road users say EDF.More project news can be found atwww.hinkleysupplychain.co.uk9
