Awards <strong>and</strong> Prize Manuscripts<br />

ALEXANDER D. LANGMUIR PRIZE<br />

MANUSCRIPT AWARD<br />

The ADL Prize was established in 1966 by<br />

the EIS Alumni Association to encourage EIS<br />

officers to publish papers based on epidemiologic<br />

work done while in the EIS. The award<br />

is given to a manuscript or publication done<br />

by a current EIS officer or “first-year alumni”,<br />

<strong>for</strong> a well-designed <strong>and</strong> executed, clearly <strong>and</strong><br />

persuasively written report of an epidemiological<br />

study.<br />

PHILIP S. BRACHMAN AWARD<br />

This award recognizes excellence in teaching<br />

epidemiology to EIS Officers. The Brachman<br />

Award is sponsored by the graduating class of<br />

EIS Officers.<br />

DISTINGUISHED FRIEND<br />

OF THE EIS AWARD<br />

Awarded by the EIS Alumni Association, the<br />

Distinguished Friend of EIS Award, recognizes<br />

a person <strong>for</strong> his or her valued contributions<br />

that have made an important difference to the<br />

health, welfare <strong>and</strong> happiness of EIS Officers<br />

<strong>and</strong> the EIS Program.<br />

IAIN C. HARDY AWARD<br />

The Iain C. Hardy Award recognizes a current<br />

EIS officer or an alumni within 5 years of<br />

having completed EIS training who has made<br />

an outst<strong>and</strong>ing contribution to the control of<br />

vaccine-preventable diseases.<br />

DONALD C. MACKEL<br />

MEMORIAL AWARD<br />

This award is sponsored by the EIS Alumni<br />

Association <strong>and</strong> recognizes a current EIS<br />

officer <strong>for</strong> the oral or poster presentation that<br />

best exemplifies the effective application of<br />

a combined epidemiological <strong>and</strong> laboratory<br />

approach to an investigation.<br />

J. VIRGIL PEAVY MEMORIAL AWARD<br />

Sponsored by the EIS Alumni Association,<br />

this notable award recognizes a current EIS<br />

Officer <strong>for</strong> the oral or poster presentation that<br />

best exemplifies the effective <strong>and</strong> innovative<br />

application of statistics <strong>and</strong> epidemiologic<br />

methods in an investigation or study.<br />

OUTSTANDING POSTER<br />

PRESENTATION AWARD<br />

This award recognizes a current EIS officer.<br />

The outst<strong>and</strong>ing poster is selected on the basis<br />

of (1) scientific content, including originality,<br />

study design <strong>and</strong> analysis; (2) public health<br />

impact; <strong>and</strong> (3) effectiveness of presentation.<br />

PAUL C. SCHNITkER<br />

INTERNATIONAL HEALTH AWARD<br />

This award recognizes a current EIS Officer<br />

or first-year EIS alumni that has made an<br />

unusual contribution to international public<br />

health. Paul C. Schnitker, M.D., died<br />

in a plane crash in Nigeria in 1969. He was<br />

en-route to serve as a public health officer<br />

in the response to famine <strong>and</strong> other public<br />

health problems resulting from the Biafra<br />

Civil War in Nigeria. He is the only person<br />

who has died while serving as an EIS officer.<br />

JAMES H. STEELE VETERINARY<br />

PUBLIC HEALTH AWARD<br />

This award is given to a current or <strong>for</strong>mer EIS<br />

Officer who has made outst<strong>and</strong>ing contributions<br />

in the field of veterinary public health.<br />

This award recognizes outst<strong>and</strong>ing contributions<br />

in the investigation, control, or prevention<br />

of zoonotic diseases or other animalrelated<br />

human health problems.
