Ambassador Qader po<strong>in</strong>ted out that as an ISA Council Member <strong>Bangladesh</strong>has been actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the fram<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> laws that would govern future exploration andexploitation <strong>of</strong> deep seabed resources. Express<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Bangladesh</strong>’s <strong>in</strong>terest to take part <strong>in</strong> deep seabedm<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g projects as an <strong>in</strong>dividual contractor or <strong>in</strong> partnership with other countries, Ambassador Qadernoted that <strong>Bangladesh</strong> would like to host an ISA sponsored workshop <strong>in</strong> the near future. He alsosought the Secretary General’s support for scholarships to <strong>Bangladesh</strong>i experts <strong>in</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e scientificresearch under the ISA endowment fund. <strong>The</strong> ISA Secretary General Mr. Odunton agreed to the<strong>Bangladesh</strong> ambassador that <strong>Bangladesh</strong> can expand its technical capacity on sea related matters byhost<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>of</strong> ISA’s annual workshops. He suggested that <strong>Bangladesh</strong> should submit a detailedproposal as per the ISA directives and assured to duly consider <strong>Bangladesh</strong>i candidates forscholarships.Established <strong>in</strong> 1994 as an autonomous <strong>in</strong>ternational organization under the provisions <strong>of</strong> theUN Convention on the Law <strong>of</strong> the Sea (UNCLOS), the ISA is mandated by the United Nations toadm<strong>in</strong>ister all exploration and exploitation activities <strong>in</strong> the deep seabed area where precious liv<strong>in</strong>g andnon-liv<strong>in</strong>g resources are located .
