It was a bright , warm andgenerally a pleasant day. The resultwas that many had their mostsatisfying outing all winter and a newcoarse record of 15.30 by DannyHannon of Sligo AC.Seventy eight runners started on theDonegal Road at 2:00pm sharp. Thiswas quite an improvement from thelast day in Donegal. While the vastmajority were from a twenty mileradius of Ballyshannon, it was nice tosee support from Omagh, Finn Valley,Killybegs, Letterkenny, North Leitrimand Sligo. There was a big number ofjuveniles there from Bundoran andthey looked very impressive in theirnew outfits.Danny Hannon is a very wellregarded road runner in the Sligo-Leitrim area. He is also noted for hisfront running. On this occasion hewent to the front as expected. Hewas followed closely be MalcolmMcCauseland with Ollie Thomas alsogetting involved at an early stage. Therace up front was hard and this wasalways in Hannon's favor. He cameaway over the last kilometer to win byeight seconds.The first O-40 was Bertie McGuinn in5th place overall. His time of 16.27was a major improvement on his lastouting. Jim Hynes of Finn Valley wasthe 2nd vet. On this occasion JimBoyle of South Donegal Harrierschased him to within 3 seconds.Jackie Harvey of South DonegalHarriers is still improving rapidly andon this occasion won the ladies racein 19.27. Colette Woods of Omaghwas 2nd and Carol McGartland ofOmagh 3rd.Oliver Thomas (Snr) was determinedfrom the start that he would win aprize. There was those whowondered out loud about hiscredentials to be in the front row atthe start but Oliver proved his pointby winning the O-45 section. MichaelSandilands of Finn Valley kept his100% record in the O-50 section.First U-19 Boy was Michael Drummfrom Omagh. Michael is still U-17also and his 16.46 was excellent.Charlie McGrane from Ballintra gotup early on to win the U-16 section.He was 14th overall in 17.24.Ollie Thomas had a good race. He isat an ideal age for a good athleticscareer and I look forward to seeingthe best of him every time out. PatBurke who has run well on all sorts ofsurfaces this winter finished 4th. Thiswas a good outing for him and themain objective for him is theupcoming track season.
