Watch theBroadcaster for further details. How did you do this week with the reading challenge? No need to reportto me but how about a little self-assessment? First, did you withspecific intent, sit down by yourself to read something? Your Bible ora devotional book counts, even a newspaper or magazine. Ultimately, however, I really want you to get into a book read for the knowledgeyou might gain, the life instruction it might provide or the entertainmentit might offer. One of my most favorite books recently read wasan historical fiction about one of America’s darker moments, when allJapanese were ordered into internment camps. Hotel on the Corner ofBitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford, tells both a sad and yet beautifulstory of loyalties and timeless devotion. It was hard to put down!!Secondly, for most individuals reading this, did you read with yourchild/ren? Those who study the reading development of childrenknow very well that reading to kids already at a very young age (evenmy 15 month old grandson will point at pictures while I read) is abuilding block for future reading skill. Hearing sounds and wordsand eventually connecting those to symbols starts the reading processon its way. Beyond that, cuddling up with a child and a good book—what could be better! Deepen the relationship with your child whiletalking through the contents of what is being read and the end result isthe development of comprehension skills. One of the greatest predictors of children who read is how much readingis going on in the house by adults who are the child’s first teacherand lifelong mentor. What an awesome responsibility we shoulder asparents in just this one single area. While we may think that at ayoung age, this little “responsibility” may not be so critical, long termstudies do verify the results; children of readers tend to become readers. It sure makes sense as in other areas of life, children will do astheir parents do— children of parents who hunt tend to be interestedin hunting or just in general terms, our children often will grab on tothe hobbies to which we become so loyal. I can’t think of too manyother things of such great importance that we might want to pass on toour kids.Continue to be a reader and support the growth of readers in yourhome!!Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most importantactivity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually needfor learning to read.Marilyn Jager Adams

March is Reading Month Activities at Borculo ChristianAs you walk into school you will notice the fish pond on the wall in the lobby and a string of fish comingfrom it. We had a tremendous response during the first week of March is Reading Month activity and the fishkeep coming. As we thought about the “catch” we might get, we decided it would be judicious to award onefish for every 30 minutes of reading. We were worried our boat might sink just like Peter’s did with a hugecatch of fish and based upon the first week of reading emphasis, I think we made a wise decision!!!!Today we had a mystery reader come to each classroom to read something to the students for 15 minutes.Tomorrow we will be having an unannounced time for D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read. Next weekWednesday is Read-a-Word Day: each student is asked to look up a new word in the dictionary and wearthat word along with the definition all day. What a great way to increase our personal vocabulary word bank. Please be thinking about the March 23 activity—a book swap. Above all, continue to encourage your childrento continue reading, for that matter, do it with them!!Sports ReportThe girls volleyball team was again victorious winning both matches last night against Muskegon Christian. Congratulationsgirls and best wishes as the season winds down to a close with just three more matches to play.Baby NewsAfter 9 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Jackson is finally home!!! We know he suffereda stroke during or shortly after delivery. All of the tests done on him reveal that the stroke wasnot caused by any internal condition. This is great news, because there were a lot of potential causesthat would have affected him the rest of his life. Furthermore, Jackson is showing no signs of havinglong term affects from the stroke, as he is moving all his limbs well and feeding well. He is at greaterrisk for developmental issues going forward, but the doctors are confident by his early signs that he willbe just fine.
