Commands used in the CHARACTERS BlockCommand ReferenceTAXLABELSThis command allows one to specify the names of the taxa. It serves todefine taxa, and is only allowed in a CHARACTERS block if the NEWTAXAtoken is included in the DIMENSIONS statement.CHARSTATELABELSCHARSTATELABELS allows one to specify both the names of the charactersand names of the states. This command was developed as an alternative tothe older commands CHARLABELS and STATELABELS. Here is an example:charstatelabels1 eye_color/red blue green,3 head_shape/round square,5 pronotum_size/small medium large;A forward slash (/) separates the character name and the state names, witha comma separating the information for different characters. If no statenames are to be specified, the slash may be omitted; if no character namesare to be specified, the slash must be included, but no token needs to beincluded between the character number and the slash. If state x is the laststate to be named, then subsequent states need not be named but states 1through x must be. If no name is to be applied to a state, enter a singleunderscore for its name. Character names must not correspond to anothercharacter name or number; thus, 1 is not a valid name for the secondcharacter listed. PAUP* does not use character-state label information;however, it will extract the name from a CHARSTATELABELS command.CHARLABELSThis command allows one to specify names of characters:charlabelsflange microsculpture body_lengthhind_angles #_spines spine_size_ _ head_size pubescent_intervalshead_color clypeal_margin;Character labels are listed consecutively. If character x is the last characterto be named, then subsequent characters need not be named, but characters1 through x need to be. If no name is to be applied to a character, a singleunderscore can be used for its name. Character names must not correspondto another character name or number; thus, 1 is not a valid name for thesecond character listed. The command should be used only for non-transposed matrices (intransposed matrices, the character labels are defined in the MATRIXcommand).16 February, 2002 PAUP* 4.0 beta documentation
