A note from Corrieand HollyCorrie and Holly both approached CitizenAdvocacy for different reasons in September 2007.Two years later, both women now share one thingin common: a friendship that developed through theEveryday Champions’ matching process.Corrie discovered the services of Citizen Advocacythrough a case worker at her group home when shefelt she needed more stable friends in her life.Although she felt well enough to work part-time orattend school, Corrie would often be too exhaustedat the end of the day from struggling with hermental illness to build strong, stable relationshipswith others who were also struggling with similarproblems. Corrie yearned for a friend who couldhelp her just relax and have fun, someone withwhom she could trust.Holly submitted her name to volunteer with CitizenAdvocacy over two years ago. She was drawn toCitizen Advocacy by the flexible volunteering hoursand the chance to connect and help someone livingwith mental illness. Holly comes from a familytouched by mental illness, and wondered if perhapssome of the skills she had learned growing upwould help her as an advocate.Holly and Corrie love to watch funny shows ontelevision, take walks in the park on beautiful sunnydays, and play board games. They still talk aboutthe time Corrie destroyed Holly in a game ofMonopoly! Another favourite activity is going tothe IMAX theatre, especially to see movies aboutanimals (for Corrie) or history (for Holly).Aside from having lots of fun together, Holly hasalso been able to help Corrie set up her computer, find friends and conversation groups online, anddownload new music onto her mp3 player. Thisyear the two women attended Evening in theMaritimes and found it to be an awesomeexperience; while Holly was impressed with themagnanimity, Corrie had the opportunity to get aphotograph with Kurt Stoodley from ‘A’ television(which of course is saved to the screen of her cellphone). Corrie says the whole experience of beingpart of this event has been one of the most specialdays of her life. Both Holly and Corrie would like to thank CitizenAdvocacy for bringing them together, and hope thatthe organization will be able to help many others inOttawa find the friends that they need.Cruising down the river on aSunday afternoon….It was on June 7 th 2009, a Sunday afternoon, whenmore than twenty matches got together for a boatcruise on the Ottawa River. Organized by the SocialActivities Club of Citizen Advocacy, the wholeexperience was fun and provided the opportunity tolook at the City of Ottawa and its neighbors from adifferent perspective. In the same way, matches metone another and celebrated being part of CitizenAdvocacy. For many of the boaters, this was theirfirst cruise and despite the lack of natural sunshine, their faces were glowing with happiness, joy andcontent. The next planned activity is a Halloween party onWednesday, October 28 th at 6 pm – details to followcloser to the date. The Social Activities Club islooking for matches to help organize games for thisevent. New members are always welcome. In this issue we are pleased to introduceDenis Comeau, board member, and Lillian Thibault, events volunteer!Denis Comeau joined Citizen Advocacy’s Board ofDirectors May 2009. Some of his positions include serving asthe Ambassador of Canada to Thailand and SouthKorea!7

Upon returning to Canada in July 2007, Denis knewhe wanted to get involved in his community. At thesame time, Citizen Advocacy was looking forsomeone with international experience and who wasalso bilingual, so Denis saw this as a greatopportunity. Denis was really impressed by themission and the quality work of Citizen Advocacyand plans on doing his very best to contribute to ourorganization.Denis and his wife have two sons. The eldest wasborn in Switzerland and now lives and works inPanama, and his youngest was born in Singaporeand is in his 2 nd year of university. When Denis has some time to himself, he enjoysgolfing, although admits that he isn’t very good atit. Planning for Citizen Advocacy’s FutureJenna, an honest, caring and good humored woman, came to Citizen Advocacy in March 2007. She was lookingto share some of her many interests – skating, shopping, and cooking, with someone lonely and in need of afriend. More importantly, Jenna wanted to help better the life of a young person by being a resource and asupport to them. Here at Citizen Advocacy, there is no shortage of protégés looking for someone like Jenna!Analisa is known by many in her community as an artistic, kind, outgoing person and an excellent skater. Whenshe came to Citizen Advocacy, she was looking for an advocate with whom she could build a long lastingfriendship.
