While it honors specifically a youth who rosefrom the irrigation ditches of Maui to become the most publicizedswimmer developed in Hawaii since the fabulous and almost legendaryDuke, the Keo Nakama Meet actually is representative of whatCoach Sakamoto has dons for the water sport in the Hawaiian Islands. So it is with humble appreciation and great pride that this writerattempts to record the achievements of Coach Soichi Sakamoto asbriefly as possible. What he has accomplished, what he is doing forthe youth of Hawaii, and the still unfilled goals he has mapped outahead would easily fill a volume.Much has already been written of his early success—of how hetook up coaching as a hobby in 1928, while a school teacher onMaui, to teach his boy scouts and school kids the fundamentals ofproper swimming . . . of how the hobby developed into a careerand the organization of the 3-Year Swimming Club in Puunene . . .of how from this humble beginning he developed such championsas Keo Nakama, Halo Hirose, Jose Balmores, Bill Smith Jr., BunmeiNakama, Fujiko Katsutani, Chic Miyamoto, Thelma Kalama, CatherineKleinschmidt, Evelyn Kawamoto, Richard Cleveland and Bill Woolsey.Let's go back to 1938 when "Coach," as he is called by his boysand girls and fellow workers, brought two shy youngsters to Honolulufor a meet at the Waikiki Natatorium.Unherald Keo (then known as Kiyoshi) Nakama and Halo(Takashi) Hirosc were the youngsters. Nakama made history bybeating Ralph Gilman of the All-American team in the 400 meterfreestyle and later Kco and Halo finished second and third behindOlympic champion Jack Medics in the 200 meter event."Coach" took the two swimmers to his first National Meet atLouisville, Ky., that year. That was the beginning of world-widefame for Coach Sakamoto and swimmers coached by him were indemand from colleges all over the mainland. Keo and Halo wonsilver medals in their first Nationals and their "Cinderella" showingwas so sensational that they stole the spotlight.Page 4(continued to page 48)XXAWHAT HAWAII MAKESMAKES HAWAIIKOPA SUDS—Lasts LongerMAMA SAN—Soap PowderMid-Pacific Soap & Supply Co.......:-:-:-:-.:-.:-:--:-:-.:••:-:-:-:-:-:••:••:••:•

However, atIndianapolis, the concerted effort and interest of the swim-loving citizensErre been responsible for this repetition. The swimming and diving facilities at Broadripple Pool, where the meetusiI be staged, arc ideal, and the pool itself, is considered "fast" as manyoutstanding times and records for both men and women have been madeat it.All of the visiting performers in this Gth Keo Nakama Meet will gosack to Indianapolis to complete as many of them are title-holders, and--cog them are: Pat McCormick, Gail Peters, Judy Roberts, Barbara Stark• Bumpy Jones; the others arc the country's strongest contenders in thecontention.Hawaii will have its share of swimmers, who will go to the Championshipsto either defend their titles, or be among the contenders. SOICHI SAKAMOTO(continued from page 4)Halo was picked on an All-American team that toured Europe andset a world 400 meter relay record. Ken was invited to Australiaand won legions of friends for Hawaii. From this beginning was born the new era of swimming in Hawaii. As boys like Keo, Halo, Bill Smith, Balmores and others started theirassault on national championships and records, the swimming worldrealized that Hawaii at long last was developing the successors toDuke Kahanarnoku, Warren Kcaloha, Pua Kealoha, Manuella Kalili,Buster Crabbe and other aquatic greats of the 'twenties. With war in Europe and the Pacific cancelling the 1940 and '44Olympic Gaines, Coach Sakamoto's great ambition of giving Hawaiiinternational champions was sidetracked until 1948-10 years afterhe first struck out to develop Olympic champions.Of the swimmers he started developing for the '49 Olympics, only Bill Smith remained on his squad when the Games were revivedin '48. Bill, along with another of Coach Sakatnoto's proteges,Thelma Kalama, made the U. S. team and both returned with threegold medals. Smith won the 400 meter freestyle and enchored the800 meter relay team while Thelma was a member of the women's400 meter relay.Three of "Cosh's" proteges made the 1952 Olympics, RichardCleveland in the 100 meter from-sir- EZ II-miry in the 200 andFord Konno and Yoshi °ya ws. tire min islanders whose riseto the top were undoubtedly lingered ley the 1=1:.CeS3 ofSmith, Hirose and Nakama.
