The Apexianmove physical entities (such as goods, water and people). These ventures employ a large work-forcewith limited education and skills and can uplift large sections of society. In contrast, ventures in knowledgeeconomy usually involve the production of knowledge intensive goods (like software's), and the largescale capture, movement and utilization of information using network infrastructure (such as computers, cable, fiber and routers). Building construction and maintenance of such infrastructure requires specialisedknowledge.Land, machinery and labour have been the contributory factors for the economic advancement of mostcountries until the first half of the twentieth century; there-after knowledge economy has been perceivedas the main driving factor of advancing the economic and social development. The role of knowledge (ascompared to natural resources, physical capital and low skill labour) has played a greater role in creationof wealth. The four pillars of knowledge economy, economic incentive, education and man-power training, innovation and information and communication technology (ICT) are taken into consideration to determinethe knowledge economic index (KEI) of nations. As per 2008 World Bank Institute assessment India'sranking is 100 while advanced countries of Europe, USA, and Japan have rankings within 20. ThoughIndia's IT sector has a global presence, manufacturing sector in India has to travel a long way to beglobally competitive. India has to provide quality education and skill-training to a larger section of itspopulation so that industrial firms, universities, research centres, consultancy firms foster an atmosphereof innovation.Dr. R.C. The ApexianA DaySivaji Sahu4th year, B.TechIt's 6 A.M. in the morning; I was set in fear and trepidation and nerved. All I could hear wasfiring of AK-47 bullets. I yearned for the people who were killed down. Then all of suddenI opened my eyes, and found that the firing of bullets was the alarm tone! Huh! I got downfrom the bed, opening the windows and gazed outside. It was beautiful, and my sunlit roomwas pleasant. And nothing else can be better than giving a warm hug to a new day andstarting the day's journey afresh to meet someone special.Walking across the roads along the street, I came to see many different people; people, whowere busy in their own work. Sweepers cleaning the road, scavengers collecting the discardedstuffs, someone driving the car to their work, someone shoo shoo-ing the dogs etc. But I'mon my way to reach my destination. And in the path, gradually the crowd increases. Fewpeople were there when I started from my room, and then slowly the crowd increased as Iapproached my destiny. The echoes from the destination could be heard from a distance andis something that made me nostalgic. There I reached my destination that annotated 'Welcome to Bhubaneswar', and I have reachedmy destination, Railway station, to meet someone special and the horns of the train thatmakes me nostalgic. It is again a place where one gets to see plethora of people from differentplaces round the world. I could sense their mood from the facial gestures; someone carryinga smile on their face, to start their journey to a new place or some having an expression outof fatigue and enervated long journey and some waiting to receive their relatives or closedones. I belonged to the latter category, to meet someone, someone special.Music heals...Saswat Kumar Pal2nd year, B.Tech."Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart andmakes it whole, flows from the heaven to the soul."13"Opportunities multiply as they are seized." - Sun Tzu

The ApexianWe are in constant vibration. Every molecule, cell, tissue and organ in our body has its ownfrequency. So does each chakra and layer of our electromagnetic field or aura. These energypoints and fields are of equal importance to the physical body as they reflect our physical state. The science of cymatics proves beyond a shadow of doubt that sound anywhere near the humanorganism creates a change within their electromagnetic fields. This change is only temporary, but while it lasts, certain very powerful, magical things may also take place. This is the "momentof healing".Sound therapy is based on the principle of "sympathetic resonance". Resonance is the vibratorystate of an object, and sympathetic resonance is when one vibrating object induces vibration inanother object in harmony with itself. Each part of our body has an optimum, healthy frequency. When we are ill, it is because some partof us is not harmony with other organs or its surroundings. Their dissonance or illness can behealed by the use of music therapy which restores the afflicted parts to their optimum frequency. This is done by directing sound waves of the required frequency towards the ill person. Even ournegative thoughts take on denser form as crystallized patterns of energy in our ewteric fieldswhich manifest as physical illness. Sound waves dissolve these crystals and relieve us from illness. The most powerful and effective music therapy includes overtone chanting and meditation music.Music helps relieve stress and anxiety, improves concentration, enhances creativity, improvesvision and helps in brain hemisphere balancing. Thus, it is proven that "MUSIC HEALS...."Dependency Of students on Web14Kameshwar Sa1st year, B.Tech.The impact of internet in today's livelihood is quite impressive. It may be associated to any fieldin life, from businessmen to a housewives, everyone is impressed with the impact of web andinternet on his life. In the same way today students are also interested in knowledge and instanthelp available on internet. Till the date, numerous number of website are working for thebetterment of students, so many sites provide informative material on the syllabus of the studies"Always do right- this will gratify some and astonish the rest."- Mark Twain

The Apexianas well as real life examples associated with them to enhance the understanding capacity for therelevant topics. When we are studying something in our book and we get a real life example ofthe same thing, then it creates an interest in the topic of how we are associated with it.Now-a-days internet has become a part of student's life as lots of things are done by the onlineprocess. One of the India's most prestigious and reputed examinations of C.A.T (CommonAdmission Test) is now organized online. So many university and institutions are handling theirD.L.P. (Distance learning program) via internet. Student of different field of interest are nowgetting a platform to show their talent in form of participation at online events such as debatesor quizzes. With the help of internet now students are able to decide their career. The most effective use ofthe web is in searching the better college. All the colleges have their website with all type ofgeneral information available at a single click. So it has proven as a boon for students. Sometimesit has been seen that some meritorious student, who deserve to get admission in the country'sbest college, but due to less information and knowledge they spoil their talent. Internet hashelped those kinds of students in realizing their talent.Using online services for taking examination has also helped in saving trees as they are used formaking paper. Now-a-days World's largest examination i.e. A.I.E.E.E. will be conducted online. These will help us to save tons and tons of wood which will be helpful for the environment. At last, the scenario is that most of the students are dependent on web for their knowledge andinformation based data. We can say that as today's students are taking help of the web basedstuff, they are getting self dependent; they can now decide their career by their own.Building a positive attitude15Saurabh Shashank2nd year, B.Tech.There was a man who made his living selling balloons at a fair. He had all colors of balloons, including red, yellow, blue, and green. Whenever business was slow, he would release a helium-"Sanity is a madness put to good uses." - George Santayana

The Apexianfilled balloon into the air and when the children saw it go up, they all wanted to buy one. Theywould come up to him, buy a balloon and his sales would go up again. He continued this processall day. One day, he felt someone tugging at his jacket. He turned around and saw a little boywho asked, "If you release a black balloon, would that also fly?" Moved by the boy's concern, the man replied with empathy, "Son, it is not the color of the balloon; it is what is inside thatmakes it go up." The same thing applies to our lives. It is what is inside us that counts, the thinginside us that makes us go up is our attitude.Love and Time16Khiteswari Krupaya4th year, B.Tech.Once upon a time, on an island love, knowledge, money, beauty was living together. One daythey found that a flood was going to hit the island soon. Everyone got panicked and wanted toescape. Everybody went out of the land except Love. Love remained there and waited for someoneto take him out of the island.First came Knowledge, on a boat with lot of things. Love asked him for help but Knowledgedenied and said that he had lot of things and he had no more space and went away. ThenMoney came on a huge boat along with his relatives. Love again asked for help but Moneywas such a proud that he did not even look at Love and went away in his way. At last Beautycame on a marvelous boat which was decorated with flowers. Love asked, crying, whetherBeauty would help him or no. Beauty told very politely that she didn't require anyone inthis world; hence she would not help anybody.Love was very upset and the island was about to drown. Suddenly he noticed someone come ona boat. He looked very old. He asked Love to come on the boat and they went to a safe place. When they reached they found, Knowledge, Money and Beauty were already there. Love askedthe others, "who is he and why did he help me when everyone refused?" Knowledge smiled withdeep wisdom and answered, "Its Time and he helped you because only Time is capable ofunderstanding how valuable Love is!""To sit alone with my conscience will be judgment enough for me." - Charles William Stubbs

The ApexianA Day during InternalsA.Girish Kumar4th year, B.Tech.While the normal reaction to an exam would be that of despair and agony- the annoyingand scorching heat of the summer, making us feel that we are here to bake our bodies aswell as our minds- the way we pass our time in the hall is quite interesting. We generallyleave the hall after an hour. The headache is not because of the exams…the headachestarts once we leave the hall. In the exam hall, somehow the time passes easily. In the firstfifteen to twenty minutes, instead of reading the question paper and cooking for the answer,we generally peep into the neighbour's answer sheet. Whatever rubbish he has filled, wemake a short form of his answers and fill our own papers. Then after twenty minutes whenthe mind goes blank, no more capable of finding an answer we start doing silly things. Welook each other's face expecting the same look of desperateness to write something in theanswer sheet. Sometimes we scribble on the bench where we sit and put some graffiti like, some catchy phrases or some joyous song or quotes, etc. whichever makes us feel good. The final ten minutes are the most eager and exciting moments. Everyone of us wait forthe minute hand to strike for the completion of the time, but that silly minute hand looks alot dizzier than the students appearing the exam, it seems as if some force has automaticallymade the minute hand move slowly. A sigh of relief appears in the frustrated faces aroundwhen the time gets over. The room which was once silent like anything turns out to becomplete chaos. But amongst this chaos, you still could find some lousy idiots writing, trying to add a few more marks to their account. Finally, group of our friends decided to have some snacks out of despairing hunger, so wewent out of our college to have bites (whoops! only during internals or exams, we wereallowed to go out of our college after seeking permission). We were sitting under the canopyof the mango tree besides the sweet stalls outside our college and all of a sudden one guyspotted out one big, green mango hanging on the tree. At first he was afraid that someonemight notice him plucking the mangoes. But to our utter astonishment, one monkey from17"Along with success comes a reputation for wisdom." - Euripides

The Apexiansomewhere jumped upon mango tree with that much of pressure that the mangoes felldown as if it was a mango rain. We were so fast that three of us were unable to catch all themangoes that fell down (we were able to pick 12-15 big ripe mangoes successfully). A manrolled laughing noticing the hunger, excitement and humour prevailing. We somehowcollected the mangoes in bags and quickly fled to the college premises. Then, the searchfor salt began. We went to our food court then we brought some salt in a piece of paper. And finally we settled to taste our afternoon's effort. We ripped the mangoes with our teethand then we had those 'khatta' awesome mangoes. It is said that "the mangoes taste muchawesome when we steal it from a garden". The saying proved to be correct.Mother18Chaitanya Ranjan1st year, B.Tech.The word "mother" gives birth to such qualities that no one could possess, except a mother herself.• She has the quality of sacrificing her own jewelleries by selling them for her child'sbetterment.• She has the quality of enduring the pain of her broken hand and even preparing the lunchby herself early in the morning only for her child.• She has the quality of making no differences between her two children by bringing thosesame toys, same clothes, same chocolates and the same wonderful gifts.• She has the quality of giving away her hunger by serving the left over edibles to her childrenafter seeing that they need more.• She has the quality of not thinking about herself and her health by joining a job outside thetown, and living alone, even at the age more than 45years to take care that her child pursuingB.Tech in another city would not get into deficiency of some requirements. In particular, these are the few qualities of my mother, I shared about. And she is the only God I believe in."Success is sweet: the sweeter if long delayed and attained through manifold struggles and defeats."- A. Branson Alcott

The ApexianThe Kindergarten19Nidhi Kumari1st year, B.Tech.A long time back, there was a beautiful garden situated on the outskirts of a city. The keeper hadnamed it kindergarten, because he treated his little plants as his own children. Tiny little plantsspread all over the garden. Every morning they rose with the rising sun, played with the flowingbreeze and in the rainy season danced with the drops of rain, with the remains of dew on them, they twinkled like stars in the daylight. The keeper's happiness had no limit, knew no bonds. Heused to admire them with pride and use to sing and dance along with them. One day as the keeper entered his garden, a small plant at the corner of the entrance arose inhappiness, waving in the air, with a big smile danced and said, "Hey everyone! Here are the newseeds, our new friends you see." With this, the happiness mixed air ran all throughout the gardenand all the plants bloomed with joy. The keeper started spreading the seeds all over the garden. As he had finished he knelt down bent towards the soil bed and said in a murmur, "From todayI leave my new seeds into your hands of motherhood. They too are your siblings from todaylook after them."Hours, days and weeks passed. Some seeds turned into beautiful plants, whereas the rest wereabout to. Time kept on moving. One energetic morning raised a small a charming plant with achildish yawn. Blinked his tiny-teeny eyes and looked all around. From the day itself he toostarted singing and dancing along with the other plants. Every night he used to sleep under themoon light with the cool breeze of air. But one night he tried hard yet could not sleep, so finallyhe decided to look at the stars and talk to the moon.Who knew that this would become his every day's best moment? That entire night too heplanned to watched the stars. Suddenly someone called up from the corner, "why are you stillawake?" He turned around to find that it was an old plant. "Why aren't you asleep yet?" said theold plant. "I am awake because I haven't slept yet", replied the little plant. The old plant lookedat him with surprise and laughed. The little plant did not understand anything, turned back and"I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure-which is: Try to pleaseeverybody." - Herbert Bayard Swope

The Apexianstarted staring at the moon again. The next morning as he woke up and looked around he saw allplants were gloomy with their heads down. As he turned back he saw the old plant falling on theground. It was hard for him to believe. Before he could understand what had happened thekeeper came in. Picked up the old plant and took him away saying "you had grown too old, it'sgood that I can at least make some use of you. It will be quit beneficial for the other plants tohave you a strong ingredient to grow".The little plant was shocked. That night as he was watching the stars and talking to themoon at a blink, black clouds covered the sky. It became completely dark, the night wasterrified. Nothing was visible in the sky except the black clouds. The little plant wasscared, whole night he tolerated the strong thunder storms and fought with the strongwinds. The night somehow passed. It was morning now, the little plant looked aroundhe did not take much time to realize that he was not well. He actually was thirsty, needed water, and was unable to bear the heat of the sun. The day was horrible. Nightarrived; little plant waited for the moon but where was the moon? He asked the starsand they said, "How silly of you, don't you know the moon sleeps for some time andthen awakes regularly for some time." Little plant was shattered he thought the moonhad betrayed him.The next morning as he woke up he saw the keeper standing in front of him. The keepersaid, "Don't worry my little master I am here to help you." And then the keeper took out awooden box which contained imported hybrid stuff for the plants. The little plant was afraidhe cried hard, "I just need water, nothing else, please, don't let these chemicals enter myroots, my tiny little shoulders will not be able to carry their load." The keeper refused tolisten to him and said "These are imported stuffs I brought them especially for you mychild, see how expensive they are. Trust me you are young enough to carry their load. Wateris ordinary I want you to have extra ordinary things." The little plant kept begging but thekeeper didn't listen to him even once. After some time the keeper left, the little plant was still thirsty, with the imported, expensive, chemicals at his roots. It was becoming tougher and tougher for him to stand. Even the warm20"Success does not consist in never making blunders, but in never making the same one a second time."- Josh Billings

The Apexianbreeze did not seem to be pleasant for him. He tried hard gave his best aimed to succeed butfinally fell on the ground with broken will. The night was over. The next morning, the plantsrose with the rising sun, played with the flowing breeze and in the rainy season danced withthe drops of rain. The keeper came again with new packet of seeds but the plants this timewere not happy they looked at each other with a question- "How will these new little plants bedestined, what was going to be there future?"Lost memories-Lost treasuresI decay with time, shattered and withered,See the lamp beside me turning lifeless. But the passion within me grows as the shadows of the past,The hue of those divine enlightened few,Come close to me and speaks with their wrinkled lips.My heart gets chilled,My sunken heart seeks for their warm shelters lost,And for those flowers from their lips that used to fall and revitalize meWith intense feeling in dews.In darkness I cry for a flicker,In desert for a drop of pearl,In the grave a pint of life,And that lap in my days lost with time.Like a stream it flows from my heart,Like a pebble it rolls; But never that touch,Never that day like,Shall return for which I crave and die.Kreyszig Retambra Reik3rd year, B.Tech.21"Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can helpthe man with the wrong mental attitude." - Thomas Jefferson

The ApexianOh! My little heart begs to Thee,Never thou be that brute, never that harsh,To take away those sweetness from any other heart.Higher than the Everest,Taller than the trees,Greater than the passion in lovers,My memory crimsoned with beauty creeps within, overwhelms me.I am left withered, left maimed,Chained in those golden crumbs I lay. Those treasures drag me towards themselves and I blindly move,Without any push but what?I turn back to see myself left helpless. Then I leap, struggle but all in vain,When I see myself still chained,Still a captive still maimed.Weeping in DespondencyIssa Mohanta3rd year, B.Tech.When the essence inside you dies, try not to cry.If you can't accept that the person you once knew,That's no longer the same,Then you will live for perpetuity,A perpetuity of shame. When you cry in despair,I think of what has changed.Thinking of things that are different,Thinking of things that are the same.22"Try not to become a man of success but a man of value." - Albert Einstein

The ApexianFading into the darkness,Never try to be in the past. You are not that person! So stand on your own.Do not crash separately when you are alone,Something might happen that you would regret.Your thinking may change,While weeping in despondency.RisksAditya Narayan Sahoo2nd year, B.Tech.To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach outfox another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.To place your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd is to risk their loss.To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair. To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken,Because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing does nothing,Has nothing, and is nothing.23"First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do." - Epictetus

The ApexianThey may avoid suffering and sorrow,But they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, or live.Chained by their attitudes, they are slaves,They have to forfeit their freedom.Only a person who risks is free. The Eternal WaitSaswat Kumar Pal2nd year, B.Tech.In moments of divine tranquility,She whispers into my soulA promise that she will descend one day;To wake me up and sweep me off my feetTo her abode of eternal joy.Days pass into months,Months into years,Years into millenniumShe is yet to keep her promise,I am yet to shake off the hope. This cosmic play of hide and seekGoes on between us,Beyond time and spaceLife after life, it has becomeA saga of eternal wait-So poignant yet so pleasant.24"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. The ApexianFading into DarknessMitali Behera3rd year, B.Tech.I have seen all them,"the dynamic , the stagnant, the modicum, the enuptional,But could not become one of those all,Life it seems will fade away.Drifting so further in every way,Getting caught within myself,Nothing else matters, no one else.I've lost the very will to line,I've nothing with me, that I can give,Nothing far which I may live,Now I need the end to set me free.Things are not what they used to be,A Soul seems missing within me.Feels like emptiness is filling me,To a state of agony,Darkness is becoming free.No one could have saved myself but me,Now, it's time, too late for me,I have lost my thoughts and my life,There is no reason for me to live,So I have to die,Yesterday seems non-existent, death greets me nowAnd I will just say "good bye".26"The art of being wise is knowing what to overlook." - William James

One issue that continues to dictate the electoral strategies is the politicalrole of caste and religious identity. The two parties that have dominated the political landscaperecently are the BSP with its base amongst the Dalits and the SP with its base amongst OBCs.The BJP relied on a vote bank polarized largely along the lines of 'religion' and this limits itsappeal. Congress is continuously demanding that it is a secular party but often including ofother party member clear the direction of groups. The further tension is the rise of smallerparties that tried to divide the voters according to caste configuration. This practices creatingproblems in community and force the political parties to see other as a competitor for patronageand resources. One main point, on which everyone agreed, somewhat reluctantly, was that onedidn't belong to a particular religious, caste etc to be politically active citizens of India .ofcourse, this is a truism but the role of Caste in people's private and social lives has changed a lot28"The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up." - Paul Valery

The Apexianin these 65 years. The political parties are only responsible for the agendas which fuels interintracommunity antagonism. The persistent emphasis of Caste and religious as political factorsactually demonstrates the alarming paucity of thoughts in many political parties .It is rarenowadays to hear any Politicians speech seeks to empower Indians rather than talking aboutcaste and religious group. Only in defense field, their speech are seeks to empower Indians orelse no where else. What is clear that the category of 'Indian' needs to be reclamation andstripped of all hyphens they are wrongly attached to it?Influence of Cable Television network in India- the enigmatic impact ofScience29Gopal Behera2nd year, B.Tech.Since time immemorial, science has provided us with many luxurious entities. The advent ofscience was the beginning of modern lifestyle in India. Scientific creations are like fuel toingenious progress. These majestic achievements of science have drastically changed the wholeworld. Among many of the contributions, some include Computer, Radio, Television, etc.Television is one of the largest achievements of the science to the world. It is directly related tothe grand progress of the nation and the broadening of mind. Now this invention has its progressthrough some leading network. The ancient network may include DD-1, DD-2, DD-6, ATN etc.But the hierarchy is totally made interesting by the advent of 'cable network'. It has its ownmerits & demerits but the first and foremost thing is that its merits are enormous. It was theclarion call of science to the mankind. It provides a grand benefit to the Indian society. Thoughthe news & sports is still being broadcasted in the ancients means of network i.e. DD-1, DD-2etc, but the cable networks aggregates the interests, talents & other superficial bases of a person'slife. It depicts the great relish to its achievers. The wide range of programs that are transmitted through this network add to the positive side ofenjoyment & entertainers. The Apexianstretch. One gets a suitable platform to cover up his/her abilities. The encouragements, the luxuriouslifestyles & the extra merriments of life have always been a fantasy for a common man, but activelyparticipating in the glamorous as well as educative shows, one lives his/her own dream.Besides providing boards of joy one comes to interact with social & economical lifestyle ofIndia. It aggregates the competiveness & raises a fire of challenge. On the other side leaving theglamorous & luxurious lifestyle, the interactive quiz programs, the discovery channels, routinelybroadcast the grave truth of life. The horror reflects the uneconomic blind beliefs prevalentamong the mob. The family serials reflect the social fabric of the ground land of India. Theydeepen the effect of the materialistic life in typical Indian society. The various educative and luxurious films not only bring the whole family together but alsobrings a forth bundle of joy, understanding, interaction among the family members. The filmspasteurizing our prehistoric area not only acquaint us with our history but also give us a relieffrom the bookish knowledge. But the demerits bring many dark side of this widely used inventionsis dramatic. It aggregates the problem of passiveness, violence activities among the youngstersand people take huge interest in imitating the lifestyle of actors & actresses. This disserves fromgetting eligible rewards among participants. The competitive sprit sometimes lands differently& it leads to total aggressiveness among the youngsters. So, though the scientific achievements have benefited the mankind, they have equally destroyedit. Thus it should not be misused; rather it should be for the right purpose, in such a way thatscience does not the master us but we make our minds capable to rule over science.SETICompiled by Abinash Kumar Sahu4th year, B.Tech.SETI is a scientific effort aiming to determine if there is intelligent life out in the universe. The acronym SETI stands for "Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence" a theme common30"The art of living lies less in eliminating our troubles than in growing with them." - Bernard M. The Apexianin many fictional works of films and literature, but has recently gained more realisticapplications. Founded in 1994, this is international grass-root organization dedicated tosearch for extra terrestrial life. Together, 15 hundred members in five dozen countries inall seven continents are keeping alive the quest of searching our cosmic companions. Aswe are not able to physically visit the 100,000 light years of space in our galaxy, SETIprojects rely on transmission from other civilizations. These projects use scientificmethods to search for electromagnetic transmission from civilizations on distance planets. The quest of searching alien life & to start an organization in these fields began in theyear 1959 when two scientists, namely Cocconi and Morrision suggested the possibilityof searching the microwave spectrum for detection of extra terrestrial signals. In 1960,Cornell University astronomer Frank Drake performed the first seti experiment, named"Project Ozma". He used a 26-meter diameter radio telescope at Green Bank, WestVirginia, to examine the stars Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani near the 1.420 marketfrequency. He found nothing of great interest. The first SETI conference took place atGreen Bank in 1961. In 1974, a large symbolic attempt was made at Arecibo Observatoryto send a message to the other world. It was sent towards the globular star cluster M13,which is 2500 light years from earth. And history was created when SETI received thefirst alien signal in1977.THE WOW! SIGNAL: The Wow! Signal was a strong narrowband ratio signal detectedby Dr. Jerry R. Ehman on August 15 1977, while working on a SETI project at The Big-Ear radio telescope of Ohio State University. The signal bore expected hallmarks ofpotential non-terrestrial and non-solar system origin. It lasted for the full 72 secondsthat Big Ear observed it, but has not been detected again. Amazed at how closely thesignal matched the expected signature of an interstellar signal in the antenna used, Ehmancircled the signal on the computer printout and wrote "Wow!" on its side. This commentbecame the name of the signal.31"The first and greatest commandment is, don't let them scare you." - Elmer Davis

The ApexianQuantum concept of timeDebashish Patnaik4th year, B.Tech.It seems that Quantum theory can predict how the universe will begin. Quantum theoryintroduces a new idea, that of imaginary time. Imaginary time may sound like Sciencefiction and it has been brought into by Doctor who (pun intended). But nevertheless, it isa genuine scientific concept. Rather it is very ancient concept discovered by early IndianYogis and sages in Vedic era. They pictured the cosmological time in a cyclic mannerand Perpendicular to the real time which is actually deals with the human actions. Thereal time is always linear and unidirectional which has born of human actions. The wholetime cycle known as mahayuga expanding to 4,220,000 years provides a cosmologicalframe. It encapsulates four lesser cycles, each smaller than the other and decaling in anorderly arithmetic progression, the names of cycles follow the throws of dice, introducingan element of probability into the concept of time. This concept reincarnated by eminentscientist Stephen hawking and roger Penrose. One can picture it in the following way.One can think of ordinary, real time as a horizontal line. On the left, one has the past, and on the right, the future. But there's another kind of time in the vertical direction. This is called imaginary time, because it is not the kind of time we normally experience. But in a sense, it is just as real, as what we call real time. The three directions in space, and the one direction of imaginary time, make up what iscalled a Euclidean space-time. I don't think anyone can picture a four dimensional curvespace. But it is not too difficult to visualize a two dimensional surface, like a saddle, orthe surface of a football. In fact, I have proposed that space and imaginary time together, are indeed finite in extent, but without boundary. They would be like the surface of theEarth, but with two more dimensions. The surface of the Earth is finite in extent, but itdoesn't have any boundaries or edges. I have been round the world, and I didn't fall off.If space and imaginary time are indeed like the surface of the Earth, there wouldn't beany singularities in the imaginary time direction, at which the laws of physics would32"One right and honest definition of business is mutual helpfulness." - William Feather

The Apexianbreak down. And there wouldn't be any boundaries, to the imaginary time space-time,just as there aren't any boundaries to the surface of the Earth. This absence of boundariesmeans that the laws of physics would determine the state of the universe uniquely, inimaginary time. But if one knows the state of the universe in imaginary time, one cancalculate the state of the universe in real time. One would still expect some sort of BigBang singularity in real time. So real time would still have a beginning. But one wouldn'thave to appeal to something outside the universe, to determine how the universe began.Instead, the way the universe started out at the Big Bang would be determined by thestate of the universe in imaginary time. Thus, the universe would be a completely selfcontainedsystem. It would not be determined by anything outside the physical universe, which we observe. The no boundary condition is the statement that the laws of physics hold everywhere. The no boundary proposal, predicts that the universe would start at a single point, likethe North Pole of the Earth. But this point wouldn't be a singularity, like the Big Bang.Instead, it would be an ordinary point of space and time, like the North Pole is an ordinarypoint on the Earth. According to the no boundary proposal, the universe would haveexpanded in a smooth way from a single point. As it expanded, it would have borrowedenergy from the gravitational field, to create matter. As any economist could havepredicted, the result of all that borrowing, was Inflation. Eventually, the period of inflationwould have ended, and the universe would have settled down to a stage of more moderategrowth or expansion. However, inflation would have left its mark on the universe. Theuniverse would have been almost completely smooth, but with very slight irregularities. These irregularities are so little, only one part in a hundred thousand, that for years, people looked for them in vain. But in 1992, the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite(COBE) found these irregularities in the microwave background radiation. It was a historicmoment. We saw back to the origin of the universe. The form of the fluctuations in themicrowave background agrees closely with the predictions of the no boundary proposal. These very slight irregularities in the universe would have caused some regions to haveexpanded less fast than others. Eventually, they would have stopped expanding, andwould have collapsed in on themselves, to form stars and galaxies. Thus the no boundary33"Light is the task where many share the toil." - Homer

proposal can explain all the rich and varied structure, of the world we live in. What doesthe no boundary proposal predict for the future of the universe? Because it requires thatthe universe is finite in space, as well as in imaginary time, it implies that the universewill re-collapse eventually. However, it will not re-collapse for a very long time, much longer than the 15 billionyears it has already been expanding. I thought that the collapse, would be the timereverse of the expansion. The universe will get more and more lumpy and irregular, as itgets smaller, and disorder will increase. This means that the arrow of time will not reverse. The universe has begun to contract. The conclusion of this discussion is that the universehas not existed forever. Rather, the universe, and time itself, had a beginning in the BigBang, about 15 billion years ago. The beginning of real time would have been a singularity,at which the laws of physics would have broken down. If we consider the imaginaryspace-time concept that says that in the imaginary time direction, space-time is finite inextent, but doesn't have any boundary or edge. The no boundary hypothesis also predictsthat the universe will eventually collapse again. However, the contracting phase will nothave the opposite arrow of time, to the expanding phase. So we will keep on gettingolder, and we won't return to our youth. Because time is not going to go backwards."The ability to concentrate and to use your time well is everything if you want to succeed in business- oralmost anywhere else for that matter." - Lee Iacocca
