Songs and Poetry for ESLSmile on the CrocodileIn key of CC … C / / / C / / / G 7 / / / G 7 / /She … sailed away on a fine and sunny day on the back of a crocodile./ C / / / C / / / G 7 / / / G 7 / /You see, said she, He's as tame as tame can be, I'll ride him down the Nile./ C / / / C / / / G 7 / / / F / /The crock winked his eye, as the lady waved goodbye, wearing a great bigsmile./ C / / / G 7 / / / F / / / C / //At the end of the ride the lady was inside and the smile was on the crocodile!Notes:The song is in common or 4/4 time, which means you count 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 as you play. (Noticewith the chord at the end of each line, the fourth strum is at the beginning of the next line.)There is only one verse, but you can sing it through several times, getting quicker each time(so practice well). There are actions for almost every word or phrase. Teach them while you say the songbefore teaching students to sing it.To start the song: Strum the C chord, then pluck the (open) 3 rd string, then the 2 nd string(which your 1 st finger is pressing on the 1 st fret). This will give the first two notes for “Shesailed …” (If you want a couple more notes – for “…away…” you need to press a finger on the2 nd fret of the 3 rd string and pluck that, and then play the open 3 rd string again.)Ruth Wickham, Brighton Education Training Fellow54
