y Teresa Anderberg, ASID Industry Partner Representative for Quartz SurfacesAs a new Committee Chairwoman, I am excited to reach out toother ASID industry partners. Our society is committed tosupporting individual business growth through networking withinterior designers and suppliers, so that everyone involved issuccessful. The Industry Partner Relations Committee kicked off inApril 2008 with a variety of successful industry partner companies, ranging from the smallest business owners to representatives oflarger firms. Having been successful in other business networks, wework to achieve the same goal within the ASID Minnesota Chapter. Our goal is to ensure that the ASID Minnesota Chapter touches allindustry partners to help them learn, grow, and be successful withinthe organization. To achieve this mission, we are looking to improveindustry partner communications. Additionally, we encouragepartner suppliers to share and improve their business practices forthe design community, increase industry partner awareness throughsponsorships, track the success and failure of industry partnerinvestments at ASID sponsored events, and establish a yearlyplanner of events and sponsorships for industry partners which willincrease participation and assist ASID funding. The Maid Squad partnered with ASID as an IndustryPartner because of the shared commonality in focus,“uniting the professional designer with manufacturers ofdesign related services”, which is a good fit for us. It hasbeen our experience that the design community is aspassionate about the services that are provided to thehomeowner as we are.Carla K. Hanson, ASID Industry PartnerOwner, The Maid Squad & PersonalHome ServicesTeresa AnderbergASID Industry Partner Representative for Quartz SurfacesChairwoman Industry Partner Relations612-232-7060Teresa.anderberg@quartzsurfaces.comCurrently, the focus is on gathering information about industrypartner involvement, existing sponsorship opportunities, interiordesigner needs from industry partner members, industry partnerexpectations, and membership retention. We are sending surveysout to both the industry partners and interior designers to help usbetter understand what is successful for our chapter and where wecan focus our efforts for improvement. We come together as a team to achieve our personal andprofessional goals, help each other to learn, grow, and be successfulwithin the ASID organization. As an active member, it is exciting tobe a part of the continued growth within the society.Quotes from other committee members:I see the quality and professionalism that ASID interiordesigners deliver as a great match for the custom finishesand works that Painted Ambiance can provide. My goalin joining ASID as an Industry Partner was to more fullydevelop my company's opportunities with theprofessional designers of the organization and to realizethe synergy that can occur when working in conjunctionwith other quality companies.Stephany Eaton, ASID Industry PartnerOwner, Painted Ambiance LLCby Bonnie Birnbaum, ASID, CID andCharlene Ackley, Allied Member ASIDThe Nominating Committee is selected by the sitting board ofdirectors. y LuAnne Silvia, ASIDThe Community Service Committee has just completed their mostrecent project, Archdale Apartments in Minneapolis. It is anaffordable housing complex for homeless youth. The Committeeworked on another homeless housing project in 2004, St. BarnabasApartments, that was so successful, the non-profit developer Aeon(formerly Central Community Housing Trust) invited the AmericanSociety of Interior Designers to work with them again. Thecommittee of interior designers donated design time in developingspace plans, selecting finishes, furnishings, and decorative lightingfixtures for the public spaces and private offices.Archdale was the first apartment complex designed specificallyfor homeless youth by Aeon. The need for more housing unitsprompted them to look for another building and St. Barnabaswas created out of the old hospital near the Twins Stadium.Once completed Aeon realized that the worn spaces ofArchdale needed updating. They worked with LHB Architects toreconfigure the public spaces on the first and lower levels as wellas some of the individual apartment units. The committee members met with Aeon staff at thebeginning of the project to tour the current spaces andassess what condition they were in and determine whatdirection to take. Next, they met as a group to discussconcept, establish color and material direction and toexamine space plan options. They wanted the interiors to feelwelcome and cozy and be much lighter in feel than the darkoppressive feeling of their current environment. Multicoloredcarpeting, new furnishings with bright bold fabricsand warmer lighter wall colors were chosen to brighten theinterior.Committee Members:LuAnne Silvia, ASIDMary Dworsky, ASIDMargaret Thompson, ASIDGigi Olive ASIDJaneen Musselman, Allied Member ASIDVISUAL COMFORT& CO. y Jennifer Noden, Allied Member ASIDIt seems that you cannot open a design magazine without somemention of “green”. To the untrained eye, there appears to be anunfathomable amount of information on what “green” is and howto get there in your design. The truth is, “green” is a journey, not adestination. It is not a daunting hill that must be climbed to callyourself a “green designer”, rather it is a way of approaching yourwork that makes every decision one that incorporates a knowledgeof your choices for environmental and personal health. Thisknowledge is what the ASID Green Committee is all about. The ASID Green Committee’s mission is to educate the ASIDMinnesota membership on green design for both commercial andresidential markets. We will also expand our reach to the consumerGrandOpening!audience. We do this through a number of venues. Articles inDesign Directions and quarterly Lunch and Learn programs aredesigned to target the ASID membership with information on howto recognize green attributes for products, what questions to ask,and how to implement the design concepts. The committee hasinformation for the interior designer and consumer base ofdesign through the ASID website. Information on “Go Green” issupplied by the Green Committee for the Home and Consumerportion of the site. This site is designed to offer the consumerbase supporting information for green purchases, lifestylechanges, and design decisions. In addition, we are organizing two monthly events this year. Thefirst session will be held September 16 with Paul Murray fromHerman Miller speaking on “The Power of One”. The secondprogram will have speakers from the major Green Designprograms (LEED Commercial, LEED for Homes, B3 Guidelines,Re- Green Guidelines, Minnesota GreenStar, Minnesota GreenCommunities) presenting information on their programs, including applicability, costs, goals, and approaches. The goal of the Green Committee is to implement changethrough knowledge and education. Although we have limitedseats available on the committee, we invite any ASID memberto join who has a passion for Green Design and can committime to the programs we are involved in as they develop. TheGreen Committee is dedicated to furthering green design onedecision at a time.7433 France Avenue • Edina, Minnesota(952) 844-0696 • www.grandorientalrugs.comemail: kurosh@grandorientalrugs.comFor further information, please contact co-chairwomen:Cindy Ojczyk, LEED AP,cindy@simplygreendesign.com, orSheree Vincent, Allied Member ASID,sheree@fusiondesigned.com14Design Directions • Minnesota Chapter

y Angela Parker, Allied Member ASIDIt is with great respect that I am writing in regards to our ArchivesCommittee. G.F. (Fritz) Weber, FASID and Ann Erickson, FIDECare the co-chairs and committee members. The mission of theArchives Committee is to put into usable order the paper history ofthe Minnesota ASID Chapter. The documentation of Minnesota ASID pictures, publicity andawards are preserved for future reference. In 1931, Minnesotabecame one of the first chapters to be recognized in Grand Rapids,Michigan along with New York and Illinois. The charter granted on23 December 1931 to the Minnesota Chapter of the AmericanInstitute of Interior Decorators (A.I.I.D.) hangs proudly in our currentchapter board room to this day.The committee is archiving such items as interior designer projects, chapter history, brochures, awards, and interior design tours. Fritzand Ann are looking for an apprentice who is interested in thehistory of American Society of Interior Designers. Two pieces the committee is documenting at this time include ourchapter history from 1939 and 1942. Washington, D.C. Chapter hasrequested that these historical records be copied at their expenseand forwarded on to them for the national archive. One is the E-blast 1939 style: a typed document that lists reports from everychapter in the United States. At that time the Minnesota Chapterwas reporting on an important dinner meeting held at theprestigious Curtis Hotel with a premium dinner cost of $1.25.The second document is actually an album. Of local interest are theadvertisements of two well-regarded firms: Baker FurnitureCompany and another company, Knapp & Tubbs. Much of thealbum is directed on how to re-purpose and reuse, due to theshortages of the war. There is even an article by General Charles DeGalle. My how things have changed since 1942!Fritz’s tip of the day,“Save it and date it.”by Rita Larson, Allied Member ASIDThe ASID Minnesota Chapter Scholarship Fund was established inNovember 1985, by representatives of Minnesota ASID Chapter to helpfinance the post-secondary education of students intending to pursue acareer in interior design. The Minnesota Community Foundationadministers this fund and makes annual awards upon the advice of anindependent selection committee created for this purpose. This awardis in recognition of the promise a student shows based on their portfolioand/or complete projects sent in to be evaluated by the committee.Submissions happen in the late spring of each year, the judging takesplace in June, and a scholarship in the amount of $2,000.00 is sent tothe winning student’s school upon selection.Public recognition of this award is given at the ASID Awards Banqueteach November, where the winner receives their certificate, is given aplatform to show their actual project and/or work as well as networkwith other designers.Three members of our Minnesota ASID Chapter have unselfishly madethemselves available year after year for the judging of this award. Weare indebted to them for helping us find the worthy student of the year. This year the judges are Lyn A. Berglund, ASID; Rachelle SchoesslerLynn, ASID and Ronald R. Scolman, ASID.As we all know, schooling is demanding, not inexpensive, and therecognition of winning this award will only help each student’s chancesonce they leave their college or university. It is yet another example ofhow our volunteerism gives back to our community.18Design Directions • Minnesota Chapter

y Charlene Ackley, Allied Member ASIDSTEP (Self-Testing Exercises for Pre-Professionals) is a workshopthat is offered twice a year to assist designers preparing to take theNCIDQ examination (National Council for Interior DesignQualification). They are offered approximately two months beforethe examination dates and are usually held at the University ofMinnesota in one of their design classrooms. They are most oftenoffered over a weekend beginning on a Friday afternoon andproceeding through Sunday completing twenty hours ofinstruction. ASID recommends that a participant take the STEPclasses four to twelve months prior to taking the exam so there isadequate time for preparation. For more information about NCIDQand STEP, visit the website www.asid.org/bcdevelopment/step.The STEP Committee plans the classes, coordinates the instructor, rooms, schedules, etc. They are responsible for making theprogram run smoothly on the designated weekend. One or twonew members are needed to fill this committee. It is a committeethat requires a smaller time commitment from a volunteer becausethe workshop is offered only twice a year. The volunteer needs tohave strong organizational skills. STEP is one of the few committeesthat require coordination between the local and national ASIDorganizations. BusinessPeer Groupby Charlene Ackley, Allied Member, ASID andMolly Gilbertson, Allied Member ASIDThe Business Peer Group provides an information and businessexchange opportunity for independent interior designers to meetand discuss business strategies with their interior designer peers. The meetings are conducive to interior designers who own andoperate their own business, or are thinking of starting a business.Unlike the Lunch & Learn programs which provide an educationalopportunity for interior designers to meet industry partners andlearn about new products, the Business Peer Group is focused onstrategies for being successful at being a business owner.Topics focus on discussions regarding ongoing changes in accountingmethods, internet and website management, managing clientele, successful marketing techniques and legal issues. Discussion guestswho are experts on these topics are scheduled each month to leadthe discussion. More experienced interior designers are also invitedto attend to share their knowledge about the subject of the day. Thediscussion guest is requested to not prepare a presentation orspeech, so the flow of the discussion can remain informal. y Bonnie Birnbaum, ASIDShowcase House is one of the primary fund raisers for theMinnesota Chapter. This project has many working parts that haveto move in sync to make it happen; the steering committee, thehouse, its owner, the contractor, the interior designers, themagazine, the sponsors, and the charities that staff the house andbenefit from the proceeds. The HouseEach year begins with the search for the perfect property.Sometimes the homeowner calls ASID, sometimes a third party willsuggest a property to ASID or a homeowner, and sometimes ASIDcalls them. Three to six homes are usually visited before a decisionis made. The committee looks for a great location with ampleparking or at least a way to get visitors to the site. The next criteriaare a home that is architecturally significant with a kitchen andseveral baths that require renovation. This project is the most visiblefor the chapter to demonstrate to the public what an ASID interiordesigner can do for a client. This year for the first time, the chapter was able to do acontemporary home. Everyone who worked on it was thrilled tofinally show a more modern look. The coverage the home receivedin the media was outstanding. The interior designers wereconcerned about the public perception with the departure fromprevious more traditional projects, but people seemed to love thehouse. Many of the comments heard were: “best ever,” “breathe offresh air,” and “warm, comfortable and livable.”The Steering CommitteeThe steering committee has six to seven interior designers who siton the committee. They consist of both allied and professionalinterior designers as well as industry partners. The chair of thecommittee must be a professional member of ASID. Joining thecommittee requires a minimum three-year commitment. Manyhours are dedicated to this venture. As one year is wrapping up, thecommittee is on the search for the next house. The group meetsevery Wednesday for about eleven months of the year. Besides theinterior designers, the other members of the committee are themagazine, and when we are in construction, the contractor. In thelast two years we had the project’s architect. The committee dutiesinclude finding the next house, homeowner negotiation, staffingduring the designer viewings, assigning the spaces, setting thecriteria, hearing the presentations, acting as liaisons between theinterior designers, homeowner and contractor, and lastly, negotiating our exit from the house. The Interior Designers“How are the interior designers selected for the Showcase House?”After the contract is signed with the owners, the home is opened toall of the interior designers to visit. Members tour the home andrequest the three spaces where they would like to work. Designersare asked to complete a bid form and list the number ofaccumulated points they have received from participating in variouschapter activities. Every interior designer is assigned a total ofpoints based on their participation in chapter activities such as,serving as a board director, chairing a committee, working on acommittee, or past participation in a showcase house. All thesepoints add to their score.Sometimes interior designers work with others, or the committeewill do some matchmaking to enable newer interior designers to beincluded. Each firm or group of interior designers picks the interiordesigner with the most points to represent that group. Points arenever added together because this would favor large firms.A spreadsheet is created listing all the spaces in the home, andlisting the requests of the interior designers. The interior designerwith the most points is awarded their space of their choice. Interiordesigners that don’t get their first choice are offered other spaces. The committee always tries to be fair and give everyone a room oftheir choice, but it isn’t always possible. The best way to get a roomis to get involved and earn points by chapter participation. Thepoint span for this year’s home was from three to over 200 points.26Design Directions • Minnesota Chapter

The HomeownersIt takes a special person to be willing to vacate their home whileseveral dozen interior designers have at it. Homeowners come in allshapes and sizes. There are those that become friends and othersthat are relieved when the project is completed. This last year’shomeowner was a very articulate, artistic homeowner with a vision,Mr. Pat Fallon.Kevin Dunn of “Mpls.St. Paul Magazine” made a great analogyabout the relationship with the homeowners. He said, “It is like amarriage, first the courtship (contract signed and houseremodeled), the wedding (the gala), the honeymoon (the tourperiod) followed by the divorce (ASID moves out).” Like allrelationships, it has its challenges. The ContractorOnce the home has been selected, the homeowner has to pick acontractor. While suggestions and guidance is offered, the finaldecision is up to the homeowner because they will be paying thebills. For the last three years, Stephenson Construction hasremodeled the showcase homes and they are a wonderful group ofcontractors. Unlike most remodeling projects, this project has ahard deadline and the contractors must adhere to the schedule.“Mpls.St. Paul Magazine” and the Sponsors Since 1996, the ASIDMinnesota Chapter has partnered with “Mpls.St. Paul Magazine” toproduce the showcase home. They are the fiscal agent and guaranteethat the project will make money. This project is essential for the ASIDMinnesota Chapter budget. The magazine carries the responsibilityto secure sponsors to underwrite the project. Natasha Freimark of“Mpls.St. Paul Magazine” does an amazing job bringing in sponsors. The magazine also provides advertising, coordinates public relations, produces the collateral and tickets, secures the charities, manages thevolunteers, runs the events at the house such as the culinary and “Aps& Wine” events, publishes the Peoples Choice winners, and sits onthe steering committee for ten-plus months a year. Kirsten Johnsonof “Mpls.St. Paul Magazine” is there everyday to open and close thehouse and manage the volunteers and the events. The SponsorsThe project could not happen without all of the wonderful sponsors, especially some of whom have stepped up to the plate year afteryear. A sponsor is a business who contributes money to helpunderwrite the expenses of the project. Our ASID Industry PartnerCambria has been the Presenting Sponsor for the last five years.Kathy Ordahl Industry Partner Representative for Cambria has alsoparticipated on the steering committee for six years and is a housefinder extraordinaire. Rubble Tile, International Market Square(I.M.S.), The Galleria and Wealth Enhancement Group have alsosupported the project for several years. This year we also hadsupport from Apres, Cities 97, Domain Architecture, Heat & Glo,I.D.C., Infiniti, James Hardie, Marvin Windows, Montaggio,Outdoor Environments, Inc., Poliform, Warners’ Stellian, Sure- Lock-Homes Security & Communications, Inc. and Fireside Hearth &Home. The CharitiesThe Junior League of Saint Paul has been a beneficiary for a numberof years. They are great volunteers and ASID is happy to supportthem in their work. For the last three years, ASID is proud to havesupported the Jeremiah Project, Cornerstone and Second HarvestHeartland. Why Do a Showcase House? The home is a very public way to demonstrate the skills of aprofessional interior designer. What better way to show the publicthe distinctive and cost-effective way to remodel a home? Over theyears several of the showcase houses have been filmed by the PBStelevision series Hometime and are seen nationally. MeredithPublications the parent company of a family of home relatedpublications always scouts the show house and often publishes it intheir magazines (e.g., “Better Homes & Gardens,” “The LadiesHome Journal,” “Family Circle,” “Country Home,” “TraditionalHome,” and “Midwest Living” to name a few.) ASID gets calls fromall over the country requesting information about the project. Ofcourse, the local coverage in newspapers, radio, TV and in “Mpls.St.Paul Magazine” also promotes ASID as well as the individual interiordesigners. The marketing is the obvious benefit, but it also creates afeeling of community among the participating interior designers. Itis a great opportunity to work as part of a team. Finally, this projectallows ASID to give back to the community and support the effortsof the charities. This year’s home included many sustainable ideas.Green tours were given, and the ASID Minnesota Chapter wasfeatured on the national ASID website of “Design Daily.” This kindof coverage shows the community that ASID interior designers dealwith issues that affect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Our chapter wants these concepts associated with the ASID brand.ArtitaliaByArtitalia GroupDESIGN PROFESSIONALS, INC.International Market Square, Suite 267612.339.6898 • Fax 612.339. 6993www.dprof.comDesign Directions • Minnesota Chapter27

y ASID’s Green Committee members Carol Boyles, Allied Member ASIDand Roger Friedell, Friedell Architects & Builders, ASID Industry PartnerWe are fortunate to live in the upper Midwest withrelatively few problems related to water supplies whencompared to the southern areas of the United States. Butwe can’t live with this viewpoint forever. Waterconservation is the key link between balancing our currentand future needs. In our homes, water needs to beconserved both indoors and outdoors. As designers, ourawareness of these needs will influence our designdecisions and have a positive impact on the environment.Saving water indoors• Maybe a bit too obvious, but stopping leaks is a greatstart. Repair all leaky plumbing.• 19% of North American water usage is from showers.Specify single head showers with low flow heads andrestrictors.• Specify and install dual or low volume flush toilets. 1.3gallons per flush or less.• Minimize the use of garbage disposals. Collectvegetable-based waste and compost it in an appropriatebin outside.• Run only full loads in the washing machine anddishwasher.• Specify and install a recirculating pump on your hotwater supply or capture tap water used when waiting for hotwater. This can be used for watering plants or in your garden.Saving water outdoors• Water only when your lawn or garden needs it. Using native plantsthat require little or no additional irrigation will help the effort toreduce the amount of water we use outside.• Water your lawn and garden in the cool part of the day, especiallythe morning hours when plants will have a chance to drypreventing the spread of fungus. There is also less wind andimmediate evaporation. Use drip watering systems that directlywater the soil, and be sure to not broadcast water on windy days.• Raise the blades on your lawn higher and mow the lawn higher:longer grass means less evaporation and less water needed.• Use a broom more than a garden hose when cleaning drivewaysand sidewalks.• Have proper controls on irrigation systems and check to makesure they are functioning correctly.• Regulate irrigation systems to conserve water. Rain sensingshutoffs can be retrofitted on old systems.• Collect rain from down spouts in large barrels or a cistern forgardening use.• Grade your property to prevent rapid runoff. Be conscious ofimpervious surface runoff from driveways and roof tops. Design tominimize runoff.• Design a rain garden (bioretention system) to filter the stormwater on site and keep it out of the sewer system. Loose, deepsoils absorb water and filter pollutants. Some systems haveunderground drains to carry water away.• Use native plants in your landscape as they require less frequentwatering and withstand the extremes of our climate better. In the Midwest, the use of grey water is just beginning. This can bea huge savings and is practiced in other areas of the country. Thebest advice of conservation is quite simple: EVERY DROP COUNTS!As interior designers, it is our responsibility to help make waterconservation a reality.References: www.regreenprogram.org, www.monolake.org(Water Conservation Tips)28Design Directions • Minnesota Chapter

y Krista M Schwartz, Allied Member ASIDI recently returned from the ASID Chapter Leadership Conference heldin Calgary this year; which is the training for my upcoming MembershipBoard position starting this fall. The timing turned out to be perfectbecause upon my return I was asked to write about the duties of ourlocal chapter’s Membership Committee. “Easy enough” I thought untilI started listing all that we do; welcoming our newest members, connecting with students, reaching out to volunteers, recruiting ofprofessionals, helping members network with one another, and so thelist goes.Where to begin? Armed with all this great information from our nationalsociety I thought why not start with what they have to say “A Society’smost precious and valuable resource is its members. Members are thelifeblood of any Society. They help the Society carry out its mission andmove forward to accomplish the goals of the organization.” Our role asmembership volunteers for our local chapter is to carry out thesecharges. We do this by being knowledgeable about membershipqualification and eligibility process, developing successfulmembership campaigns, and conveying the Society’s value topotential and existing members. Our committee meets the firstTuesday of each month, but the real work happens outside ofthese meetings.give or are available for a larger commitment. Contact Mary to learnmore about the opportunities and find a good fit for your talents. No amount of time is too small. Mary is also a great resource forthose committees needing additional member support; let herknow what your needs are and she can connect you with a greatmember volunteer. Many of our members tell us that they join ASID for networking withother professionals and industry partners. And the membershipcommittee helps to play a role in this, but we could also use ourmembers help. At the next event or meeting you attend pleaseextend a welcoming hand and share your experiences to those whoare new to our chapter. Together we can make our chapter vital. Tolearn more about all membership has to offer contact Krista atinfo@asidmn.org.Last year we rolled out our New Member Welcome Event as a wayto inform our newest members about all our local chapter has tooffer in the way of programs, events, volunteer opportunities, andnetworking. We’ve found that even existing members like to attendto reconnect with the chapter and become more involved. RecentlyASID national launched an online community called ASID Connexas a way for members across the country to connect and discusstopics relating to the interior design profession. At the beginning of each school year we travel to the universitiesand colleges to meet with the students to discuss benefits, resources, and connections ASID and its members can providewhile they are in school. We also get involved with the seniors priorto graduating to promote student membership advancement andall allied membership has to offer as they are starting their career indesign. We really encourage students to be involved with theSociety at any stage of their education; it’s a great way to learnabout the real world of design and meet future employers.Recently we added the volunteer connection with Mary Carl ofFrancis King as our current volunteer coordinator.
