The AustralianTitanic ConnectionArthur McCrae was the grandsonof Georgiana McCrae, of McCraeHomestead, and tragically diedin the sinking of the Titanic. Thisis Arthur’s story.With the 100 year anniversary of the loss ofthe Titanic in April this year, we pay tributeto 32 year old Arthur McCrae who was theonly Australian passenger on the Britishluxury steamship.Born on the January 7 1880 in Adelaide,Arthur Gordon McCrae was the secondyoungest son of Farquhar Peregrine GordonMcCrae and Emily Aphasia Brown.Arthur was educated at Sydney Grammarand went on to study engineering at StPaul’s Collage at Sydney University. OnceArthur graduated he traveled overseas,accepting a position at a gold mine in SouthAfrica. He then moved to Tsarist Russia inthe post of assistant-manager of the Spaskycopper-mine, Akmolinsk, Siberia.Frequently writing to his family, Arthur oftenshared his tales and adventures, sendingsouvenirs and photos of faraway places.Arthur became engaged to the daughterof the mine manager while in Spasky. In1912, Arthur made his way to England onhis way to meet up with friends in Canada.At Southampton he purchased a secondclass ticket and was thrilled to board theTitanic on its maiden voyage on the 10thApril, 1912.Four days later, the Titanic collided withan iceberg. In catastrophic circumstances,Arthur died in the sinking and his bodywas recovered and buried at the FairviewCemetery, Halifax, Nova Scotia.The record on Body No.209 reads.NO.209-Male-Estimated Age, 45. Fair-Hair,Clothing-Blue suit; white canvas shoes;flannel shirt.Effects-Diamond and Emerald ring; goldlinks; two watches; key chain; keys; pencilcase; foreign bills; letter case.Name-Gordon McCrae.FOOTNOTE:Arthur’s grandmother was GeorgianaHuntly Gordon McCrae (1804-1890).Georgiana was the illegitimatedaughter of George, 5th Duke ofGordon and Jane Graham. Georgianamigrated to Australia in 1841 to joinher husband Andrew (1800-1874). Shebought her four young boys with her,the youngest of whom was Arthur’sfather, Farquhar. Georgiana lived atMcCrae Homestead, which is oneof the Trust’s four properties on theMornington Peninsula.A salute to SuperintendentCharles La TrobeCelebrations for Lieutenant-Governor Charles Joseph LaTrobe’s 211th birthday were heldrecently at La Trobe’s Cottage.Birthday celebrations were officiated byMartin Purslow, CEO of the National Trust,and Professor Adrienne Clark AC, Chancellorof La Trobe University. The event wasattended by a large gathering of guestsincluding the Friends of La Trobe Cottageand event organisers, the La Trobe society.The event marked new linkages betweenLa Trobe University and the La Trobe Societywhich the National Trust, as owner andmanager of La Trobe’s Cottage, fully supports.Left to right: National Trust CEO Martin Purslow, Professor Adrienne Clark AC, Chancellor ofLa Trobe University, President of the La Trobe Society Diane Gardiner, Professor Robin Williamsand Professor Richard Broome.Thanks to a Commonwealth Governmentgrant, the Cottage has undergone a recenttransformation, with a new cedar shingleroof, fence and a beautiful garden, featuringplants from La Trobe’s time.MAY 2012 19
