It can’t be Week 7 already!
I am constantly surprised at how time flies! We are already
up to the third last week of the term. It has been a rather
short term with many exciting events and learning happening
along the way. Aren’t you amazed at when you get to Friday
and wonder how we got there so fast...
All parents instinctively know the importance of keeping
children occupied to stop them getting bored, but they can
now find scientific evidence to back up those instincts. Two
psychology researchers from Canada’s University of Alberta,
Dr. Anthony Chaston and Dr. Alan Kingstone, have proven
that people who are busily engaged in their tasks are less
aware of the passing of time.
Chaston and Kingstone gathered a group of people to
undertake a test that was a kind of "Where's Waldo" activity,
where they were asked to locate specific items in various
images. They were also told that upon completion of the test
they would be asked to estimate how much time had passed
during their test.
The tests had different levels of difficulty; sometimes the
items were easy to find because of easily differentiated
colours, while in other parts of the test it was much more
difficult to locate the items because of more sophisticated
camouflage, and in some cases the items were not even
present in the images.
Chaston described their findings in the following terms:
"The harder and harder the search tasks were, the smaller
and smaller the estimates became. ...The results were super
clean--we have created a new and powerful paradigm to get
at the link between time and attention."
Chaston identified two kinds of time estimations: prospective
time estimation (the estimator knows in advance that he
or she will be asked to make an estimate after a task is
completed), and retrospective time estimation (someone
has been asked to provide a time estimate after the task
has been completed). "There's generally a big difference
between prospective and retrospective time estimations,"
Chaston said. "In our society, we're pretty good with
prospective estimates. Most of us wear watches, and we're
pretty good at keeping track of the time because we have to
for most of our regular, daily lives."
Chaston summed up the results of the tests in the following
terms: "This really shows that even if you know in advance
that you're going to have to estimate the time of a task, the
more attention the task requires, the faster time flies."
AIRBORNE TRIANGLES AND SWEEPING ARCHES
Recently the Year 1 and 2 students embarked on an Art excursion to Melbourne’s Federation Square. The purpose of this
adventure was to exercise the student’s photographic knowledge taking interesting photos and making creative use of subject
matter, composition and photographic angles. As a forerunner to this excursion the students spent two lessons observing and
photographing some architectural elements on the grounds of Tintern Schools.
The Federation Square location provided inspirational subjects from the sweeping arches and buttresses of the nearby St Pauls
Cathedral and the graceful historic architecture of some of Melbourne’s prized buildings such as Flinders Street station, The
Forum theatre and the Gas Co. building. These buildings ensured a powerful contrast with the contemporary structures of
Federation Square, the Art Spire and the Rialto Tower.
The students’ photos indicate a brilliant observation of line, shape and pattern in the world around them. Be sure to visit and
marvel at their stunning results on the Junior Schools Studywiz portal.
World Maths Day
We take the subject of Mathematics very seriously here
at Tintern and study it for at least an hour a day. However,
Junior School students in Years 3 to 6 recently celebrated
and ‘let their hair down’ on World Maths Day by taking
part in a Maths themed morning tea and wore their hair in
styles with a Maths related ‘hairdo’. From the smiles and
discussions that were present on the day, it was clear that
the topic of Maths was on everyone’s mind.
Leading up to the event, students in Years 3 to 6 were invited
to strategize and guess the amount of M&Ms in a jar, the
winner being the student with the closest guess and the
prize being – you guessed it - the jar full of M&Ms.
Congratulations to Emily Vandenbroeck in Year 4 who had
this to say after being awarded the prize: “..I looked into the
jar and saw that there must be more than 100, maybe there
would be 902? I was very happy and proud when Ms Green
called out my name…and I have been sharing the M&Ms
with my mum, dad and Keira”.
In this case, Emily imagined how much space or volume 100
M&Ms would take and imagined the amount in the jar. The
answer was 938 M&Ms.
Thank you to all those who participated and I hope you all
enjoyed World Maths Day.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The annual event of the Premier’s Reading Challenge has begun for the year. Our premier, Mr. Ted Baillieu, encourages all
Victorian students to take part, and in fact all Tintern Junior School students are participating. The children are encouraged
to read a wide variety of books and to recommend books they have read to their friends. The enthusiasm amongst the girls is
conspicuous, with many having already finished the challenge and many others well underway. Some students are setting their
own personal goal to read 50 or even 100 books by the final day: September 10.
Completed books can be entered on the website: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/prc/
Prep Yoga Incursion
A fabulous hour of Yoga was enjoyed by the Preps on Friday
afternoon last week. They floated like butterflies, created
animal poses such as cat, dog and bird, became a tiny seed
and saluted the sun.
The final activity was a delightful relaxation exercise where
the Preps floated around the room on their imaginary magic
carpets amongst the fluffy clouds.
Year 4 Botanical Gardens Excursion
On Friday 9 March, a beautiful autumn day, Year 4 went on
their first excursion of the year to the Royal Botanic Gardens
in Melbourne.
Our challenge was to listen to the many interesting facts
presented by our tour guide, Jan, observe what we saw and
make brief notes. We all knew that this was going to be an
exciting day.
First we went into the Ian Potter Children’s Garden to look
at plants under microscopes. We couldn’t believe how many
spores were on the underside of a fern!
Next we went on a walk around the gardens. To our
amazement we actually saw a working bee hive that had
been growing for 5 years. The different species of plants in
the garden were very interesting; especially the Snowy Wave
succulent that grows in hot places and actually makes its own
sunscreen. We saw native plants, pre historic plants, and
many varieties of trees, grasses and flowers.
Our favourite area was the rainforest walk. The trees grew so
tall and straight. They made a beautiful shady canopy above
our heads. An old oak tree had been struck by lightning on
November 5 (Melbourne Cup Day) 1972. The tree split in half
but was saved by a tree doctor who wired it back together.
Many people believe that fairies live under the tree and
that’s why it survived. We all gave the tree a hug.
Finally we went back into the children’s garden to explore.
There we saw a Murray River Gum tree stump. Long ago, the
tree had fallen into the river and had been covered with mud.
The chemicals in the mud had turned the tree black and had
preserved it for over 9600 years.
We all agreed that this had been a fascinating excursion filled
with learning, fun and adventure.
Year 4 would like to thank Mrs Young and Mrs Edwards for
looking after us so well.
After school activities for Years 3-6
Pick-up time!
At the end of school (3.30pm), many Junior School girls (from
Years 3-6) make arrangements with their parents to be picked
up at various locations within the Junior School. However, at
the end of each after school activity, when there are a lot less
people around, all children are required to confirm with the
teacher on duty that their parent has arrived before leaving
the site.
As per our school policy – no child (at an after school
activity) should be picked up from the school site without
first notifying the teacher that the parent has arrived. It is
recommended that all parents use the ELC car park for easy
pick-ups when their child is attending an after school activity.
The safety of our girls is always the highest priority for us at
Tintern.
EARLY LEARNING CENTRE CORNER
Early Learners lead the way!
Life in the ELC has continued to gain pace over the last few weeks. With the children now settled into their new environment it
has been amazing to watch them grow in confidence as they become more familiar in their new surroundings.
The Early Learner A class have had their first Library sessions where they have read “The Great Big Enormous Turnip” by Alexei
Tolstoy. The children have planted beetroot seeds and are watching them grow. Hopefully they will grow up sweet and strong
like the turnip in the story. Perhaps the children will need to help each other to pull up The Great Big Enormous Beetroot?
Our investigations in the Early Learners A class have led to many experiences throughout the ELC, with gardening featuring in
many conversations with the children. A visit from The Very Hungry Caterpillar from Mrs Oates’s vegetable garden resulted in
some children retelling another much loved story.
Literacy development flows through all aspects of the ELC curriculum, reading a much loved story with the children has led to
science, drama, math, and language experiences. Learning is occurring in many ways with Tintern Schools youngest students.
Wendy Oates
Early Learners A Teacher
Welcome to Maria!
Mrs Bigg-Wither has just joined the ELC
as an additional assistant in the Pre-Prep
A classroom. She has had training as an
additional assistant and has experience
working in early childhood settings.
Maria will also be doing some work in the
Prep classroom.
We are delighted that Maria has joined
us!
A Visit to the Farm!
Children in the ELC are beginning to have their first farm visit for the year. For
children in the Early Learners, this will be their first ever farm visit at Tintern
Schools and they will take the minivan to the farm.
For the Pre-Prep children some are going to the farm for the first time and all are
walking there for the first time. It’s a long walk for these little legs and Pre-Prep A
who were the first to go recently did a great job all the way there and all the way
back!
While at the farm we met with Farmer Wall who took us to see the sheep, feed
the cows and take a run in one of the paddocks. We had several wonderful parent
helpers who supported the children in having a safe and happy farm experience
and asking interesting questions of Farmer Wall. The children all remembered
their Pre-Prep
behaviour and
manners and
made choices that
ensured we all
had a great time.
Seeking ELC Class Representatives!
Do you like having coffee and getting to know others? We are still looking for parent
representatives in the ELC. Parent Reps are parents who volunteer to organise social activities
for your class. This is an easy but important role that is truly valued and appreciated by the
other parents and the school.
Please contact Di Lacey in the Community Relations Office on 9845 7877 for more
information or to volunteer.

Uniform Reminders
Thought for the Week
Blazers - please remember that blazers are essentially a
garment to wear to and from school or for special occasions. In the vast expanses of Snowdonia in
It is important that all girls bring their jumper to school. We North Wales there are deep valleys and
do not normally encourage girls to wear their blazers during lakes that flow to the sea, overshadowed
normal school hours.
by rocky mountain tops that stretch to the
sky.
Hats – it is essential that all students bring a hat to school.
Students will be asked to play in the shade if they do not
have a hat at school.
Roll on sunscreen - all students (ELC to Year 6) are asked
to provide sunscreen which they should be able to selfadminister.
It is particularly important that sunscreen
is brought to school on the very hot summer days. For
Health and Safety reasons the school does not provide any
sunscreen so it is an essential item to remember now that it
is quite warm.
• Existing students can purchase items and put them on
their school account.
• Parents are also able to phone or email purchases (which
can be placed on the school account). Uniform items
can then be delivered directly to your daughter’s/son’s
classroom.
Second Hand Uniforms
• Second hand goods are sold on consignment; 80% of the
proceeds are given to parents and a 20% handling fee is
charged by the school.
• A form (available from the Uniform Shop) must be
completed by the parents listing all the goods.
• The items must be freshly laundered, in very good
condition and on wire hangers tied together with the list
attached.
• Proceeds of second hand goods are credited to school
accounts (or if from a past student a cheque will be
issued) at the end of each Term.
To walk in these valleys and climb the
high peaks is both a challenging and
exhilarating experience. In this wild and
remote encounter the adventurer is pushed headlong into
the reality of life but also invited into a new place or even
spiritual encounter.
In the experience of the desert and mountain places Jesus
was challenged to face the reality of his own possible
limitations. He was also to experience a different dimension
of his own spiritual life.
In this Lent God invites us in our deep valley and mountaintop
experiences to accept the realities and frailties of our life
and those with whom we share life’s journey.
As we travel this road may we know the love of those with
whom we share this journey. May we experience the everpresent
grace of God, Father Son and Holy Spirit.
Peace in this Lent
