Dear School Community,
Tiwi Girls Visit to Tintern Schools
Every once in a while we receive an opportunity that is truly special; an opportunity that allows us not only to
improve ourselves and our environment, but the lives and futures of others. The Tiwi College visit to Tintern Schools
is one such opportunity.
2011 Silk Cut Awards: Tiwi College students’ success!
Lucy Osman, Year 6
Thursday 8 September 2011
Partnering with The Smith Family and the Rotary Club of Nunawading,
we agreed to host ten Tiwi College girls from Monday 29 August to
Sunday 4 September, and show them the places we call home, the
school we study in, and the lives we lead.
Arriving on Monday, the girls were immediately eased into the Tintern
Schools environment with open arms. Buddies were made and the
trip had begun. The next day, a traditional Smoking Ceremony and
Welcome to Country was held with the leader of the Wurundjeri tribe,
Murrindindi. The day was then filled out with a trip to Melbourne – the
weather stayed bright, and the girls’ moods were ecstatic as they took
the big city in. Things we take for granted, such as trams, skyscrapers
and the bustling Victoria Market, were whole new experiences for the
Tiwi girls, and their wide-eyed excitement was palpable. Various classes
at Tintern filled the rest of the girls’ time, and photo journals were
completed as souvenirs of their special visit.
This visit showcases Tintern Schools ability to connect with distant
communities in special ways. The bonds made between the Tiwi girls
and their host families will last for a long time to come, as will the
connection between Tintern Schools and the Tiwi College. On that
note, many thanks must go to the host families – this visit would not
have been possible without your support, and the Tiwi girls loved every
moment of your company. Thanks must also go to Mrs Sally Eastaugh
and the other staff who made this a wonderful learning opportunity for
both communities.
On Friday 2 September, two host families and four Tiwi College students, along
with one of their teachers and Tiwi Elder, Mr Marius Puruntatameri, attended
an award evening at Caulfield Town Hall for the 2011 Silk Cut Awards for
Linocut Prints. Many individuals and schools were represented from across
the country, and the Tiwi students had submitted a collection of ceremonial
baskets in linocut.
We were all so thrilled to see the Tiwi College students win a prize of $2,500
for their Art department and the privilege of their work being shown in the
National Gallery of Canberra.

The exhibition and awards have been active for seven years and they celebrate the diversity and excellence that
exists in contemporary linocut printmaking. It is now one of the most important print awards in Australia.
Congratulations girls!
Tintern 2020
On Wednesday 7 September, Tintern Schools announced ‘Tintern 2020’: its inspiring
vision for the future of the School, based on a 100 per cent commitment to parallel
learning on a single site. This vision aims to enhance the excellence of Tintern
educational outcomes for every student, regardless of their gender, academic
abilities, or interests.
As part of Tintern 2020, we are asking suitably skilled parents to apply for roles in
five work stream groups, to give support and advice regarding the future planning
of Tintern Schools. The five groups are: Teaching and Learning; Place; Promotion;
Finances; and Community Connection. Invitations to register a submission to join a
work stream will be sent to all parents by the end of Term 3.
On Friday 9 September our new Tintern Schools website will be launched. For more information, please visit www.
tinternschools.vic.edu.au and click through to the Tintern 2020 microsite.
20 Years of Service
Reaching 20 years in any organisation is a milestone. Four of our current staff members began at Tintern in 1991 –
marking 2011 as the 20th anniversary of their commencement at Tintern Schools. These staff members are Mr Geoff
Connor, Head of Tintern Campus; Ms Patrizia Jakovljevic, Head of Performing Arts, Drama and Dance; Ms Helen
Kirkland, Coordinator of Education Support in the Tintern Junior School; and Mrs Yovi Dubberlin, After School Care
Coordinator.
Mr Geoff Connor
Geoff joined the Tintern staff at the start of 1991, initially taking one year’s leave from the State
Education System. 20 years later, he enjoyed it so much that he is still here!
Geoff has been the Year 9 and Year 10 Coordinator at separate times, and has a deep passion for
Mathematics, teaching a range of subjects in that field. In 1995, he became the Timetabler and
Daily Organiser, and held that role for 13 years. His connection to IB is strong, becoming the IB
Coordinator in 1999 and holding that position for nine years. In 2008, Geoff was appointed Head
of Tintern Campus.
Geoff has actively contributed to the co-curricular side of Tintern Schools life by being part of the backstage team at
many musicals and productions. He loves to record the results and add scores at the House Athletics and Swimming
Carnivals. He is also an inaugural staff member of Watt House, established in 1993.
Geoff has a tangible family connection to Tintern Schools: his wife, Maria Connor, commenced here in 1989, and
their two daughters, Anita and Angela, are both Tintern graduates.
Ms Patrizia Jakovljevic
Patrizia joined the Tintern Campus at the commencement of 1991, having been appointed to
lead the Drama department and to teach English and Drama. Over the years, she has taught:
Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 English; Year 12 VCE Literature; Years 7 – 12 Drama, Dance and Theatre
Studies; and IB Theatre.
An inspiring team leader, Patrizia introduced IB Theatre and VCE Theatre Studies to the
curriculum, as well as establishing a wide variety of Dance and Drama subjects across the Year
levels. She also has a major hand in leading an annual variety of Performing Arts evenings.

Patrizia has directed and co-produced countless plays including Antigone, Cosi, The Pirates of Penzance, Godspell,
Chicago, and this year’s West Side Story and Kaspar.
Her energy is infectious and bounces off the walls, and this energy brings a unique spark and sense of vitality to
Tintern Schools.
Ms Helen Kirkland
Helen began teaching Science in the Senior College in 1991, and quickly became Year 7
Coordinator. She worked part-time in the Junior School Education Support department while her
family was young, and is now the full-time Coordinator of the same area.
Helen sees the welfare and wellbeing of every student as the heart of what she does. She is
always seeking to re-evaluate and review programs and curriculum to ensure that the best
programs are being taught at all times. She is a mentor, friend and colleague to many staff
members, and an inspiration to the Education Support team.
In Helen’s own words, “The Education Support Department has always been at the cutting edge of innovative
programs and support for Tintern Schools students. It is a dynamic and collaborative team of professionals who have
always enjoyed working and learning together in order to do the very best for the students in our care.”
Helen has boundless energy, never leaves a stone unturned, is a great advocate for students with disabilities, and
loves a challenge. These are all traits any Education Support leader should have, and we are lucky to have her here at
Tintern Schools.
Mrs Yovi Dubberlin
During Yovi Dubberlin’s 20 years at Tintern Schools, she has managed After School Care and the
Holiday Program. She has overseen many venue changes with After School Care and has taken up
residency in the Colebrook Hall, the Hamilton Centre and the I J Day Centre.
A funny, animated and creative individual, Yovi is blessed with an inclusive nature that ensures
no child is ever left out. She has always been popular and well-loved by both children and
their parents. Many secondary students still drop in to reminisce and chat with her, and this is
testament to her wonderful nature.
Year 11 and 12 Practice Exam Tips
Our Year 11 and 12 students are fast approaching their practice exams. I know that all the teachers have prepared
the students extremely well for these exams, and the students should heed the very specific advice given to them in
each of their subjects.
To be as prepared as possible, students should follow these simple steps:
• Be well organised
• Get plenty of rest (around 7-8 hours a night is preferable)
• Eat healthily, and avoid sugary drinks and junk food
• Partake in regular exercise
• Have an organised workspace – a comfortable and quiet area where you can relax and focus
• Avoid social media or intrusive technologies - mobile phones, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc.
• Take five deep breaths – anywhere, anytime!
A 2010 VCE high achiever, Harrie Bantick, wrote a fantastic article in The Age on Monday 5 September outlining
some very useful techniques. Harrie’s last tip applies to “not sleeping in” during the holiday and swotvac period. By
maintaining the same sleeping/waking routine through your break, your chances of successful study in the mornings
are much higher. You can read the rest of the article at http://www.theage.com.au/national/education/how-to-clearvces-final-hurdle-20110902-1jpyr.html.

Figuring out an organised study timetable is also of the utmost importance. Make sure you have an equal focus on
both study and rest, but don’t forget to take the time to socialise with family and friends. I am sure our students will
do extremely well, and I wish them good luck.
Inspirational IB student visits Tintern Schools
Mrs Nola Brotchie, IB Coordinator
On Friday 2 September we were very fortunate to have Yvette Zegenhagen address the School Assembly. Yvette was
a well known member of the school community during her six years as a student at Tintern. She completed Year 12 in
2003, having studied the International Baccalaureate. She was Watt House Captain in her final year. Always a highly
motivated student, Yvette was involved in co-curricular activities as diverse as gymnastics and playing the trumpet in
the school orchestra. She was also keen to take on new challenges and this has continued in her life after Tintern.
After winning the Bond University Scholarship she moved to the Gold Coast to study Law and International Relations.
During her studies she completed an internship with the Australian Embassy in France. After graduating she worked
in West Africa, providing Legal Aid on a volunteer basis. Upon returning to Australia she joined a commercial law
firm in Melbourne, and was admitted as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of Victoria and High Court Australia. She
has now left commercial law to focus on international law, and is the International Humanitarian Law Officer for
Australian Red Cross. Additionally she is completing a Masters of International and Community Development and
also volunteers through various organisations including Australian Red Cross.
In her inspirational talk she reflected on what she had gained from her time at Tintern. She spoke of the important
and enduring friendships she made. Yvette also acknowledged the supportive teachers who helped her master
subjects which were not always her strength. In studying the IB, Yvette took on the challenge of senior level Maths
and Chemistry. As a Humanities student, this was not always easy, but perseverance paid off, and she learnt that
hard work can achieve great results. Yvette observed that she was, and that our current students are all, extremely
privileged in attending a school such as ours. She asked all students to recognise this and to make the very most of
their opportunities. Yvette acknowledged the dedication and expertise of the teaching staff. She ended on a note
which sums up her whole persona - that volunteering one’s time and expertise is so important to our community
and that there is much joy to be gained from doing so.
We were all inspired by this high achieving, modest and caring past Tintern student.
Everybody has a passion...
Tasmanian Netball Trip 2011
Simone Esmonde, Coach
It was wonderful to see Adrian Lazzaro display the car he is racing in at
the recent Southwood Assembly. With his support team, he took the
opportunity to bring in his Formula Ford machine to show the Southwood
community, and I was so taken by his prowess, skill and love for his sport
that I had to share it with everyone.
Just like Adrian, we all have our passions. I encourage all our students
to pursue those passions wholeheartedly, and to showcase them to the
Tintern Schools community wherever possible.
On Wednesday 3 August, ten girls representing the EISM travelled to Tasmania to
compete in five games against school teams from Launceston and Hobart. The girls
selected from Tintern were Samantha McKissack and Jamie-Lee Baker.
The first games were in Launceston against two St Patrick’s College teams. It was a
tough game, losing 24 – 56 and then another tough match up against their second
team (Tasmania’s State Premier Team for their division). The second match score

line was 34 - 34, a draw. On Thursday the match was in Launceston against Launceston Church Grammar School.
During the game there was an onlooking crowd which was quite vocal, cheering for their home team. The final score
was a 28 – 46 loss to the EISM team.
On Friday the team played against McKillop College (Hobart) with a comfortable 61 – 8 win. The last game for the trip
was against Tasmania’s best School Girls Team, Guilford Young College. What a game! The girls came out fighting and
finished fighting, only being defeated by five goals, losing 46 - 41.
The trip was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for the girls.
Interschool Snowsports 2011
Ms Oriana Constable, Head of Girls Sport
Congratulations to all students who took part in the Subaru Interschool
Snowsports Competition at Mt Buller from 21 to 26 August. While the weather
was kind to us - lots of sun and clear blue skies - the conditions were challenging
with some icy and patchy snow to contend with. It was fantastic to see the
support of families and all students willing to ‘give it a go’ in their events against
some very tough competitors from all over the state. We had students from Year
4 through to Year 12 competing in Snowboard Giant Slalom, SnowboardX, Skiing
Giant Slalom and SkierX. In addition to the events taking place on the slopes,
students and families were also able to take part in an Opening and Closing
Ceremony where there was a spectacular fireworks display.
It was great to see many students improve on their times from last year and finish competitively in their races.
Special mention must go to Sophie Moore (Year 12) who has qualified in Snowboard GS and SnowboardX at the
Nationals being held at Falls Creek in September.
Preparing for the final years of school with Andrew Fuller
On Thursday 13 October, Andrew Fuller will be discussing how to prepare for the final years of school at an open
evening at Tintern Schools.
The final years of school are often stressful – not just for the student undertaking their exams, but for the families
around them as well. Parents need to help their children to keep perspective and help them to understand that they
are not just the sum of their ATAR score. Andrew Fuller will be discussing ways of achieving success in these final
years of school and strategies that students can use to work smarter - not harder.
This is a fantastic opportunity for parents and students to learn about how to get through the final years of school
with minimal stress. Tintern Schools will be inviting members of the public as well as the community to this
informative evening. Students entering Years 10 - 12 are encouraged to attend the event.
Time: 7pm (for 7.30pm start)
Date: Thursday 13 October
Location: Tintern Schools, Hawthorn Room, 90 Alexandra Road, Ringwood East
Our Community
In the spirit of staying connected
A wonderful day at the farm
A wonderful day was enjoyed by all who attended
the Farm and Outdoor environment celebration
on Saturday 27 August. Approximately 80 people
including past students, past staff, current
Young Farmers and their families enjoyed a
sausage sizzle on the lawn and afternoon tea
in the Outdoor Ed centre. Many stories were
shared as past students, their families and staff
reminisced about their times spent at the Farm
and Agricultural shows. The weather was kind,
providing a wonderful opportunity to tour the
shearing shed, vegetable lots and paddocks.
The bountiful young lambs provided endless
entertainment for all. Many thanks are extended
to TOGA for hosting the day; to the Young
Farmers who assisted with tours and animals;
to the Young Farmers’ parents who managed
the sausage sizzle and Di Grochowska and Gavin
Wall who were available to assist on the day.
Thank you to everyone who donated photos and
memorabilia to the Archives and special thanks
to the members of our community who donated
more than $2000 to support TOGA’s Gift to the
Farm. TOGA and Friends plan to support the
purchase of ultrasound equipment to assist early
detection of sheep pregnancies. Please contact
the Community Relations Office if you would like
to make a contribution.
The Annual Spring Garden Tour for
2011 needs your help
The Annual Spring Garden tour is scheduled to
take place on Friday 4 November. Due to family
commitments, our regular volunteer organiser is
unable to coordinate this wonderful community
event this year and we are looking for a volunteer
to take on this fulfilling opportunity. There is
minimal coordination required and you would
be required to attend the day as a guest of the
Parents’ associations. As Term 4 is nearly upon
us please contact Di Lacey in the Community
Relations Office if you are interested.
FOM Munch with the Musos
Sunday 27 November
On Sunday 27 November at 10am, the Friends
of Music will host the Annual Munch with the
Musos event. This is a brunch time concert
showcasing the up and coming talent of Tintern
Schools in a relaxed atmosphere whilst enjoying
tasty treats. The event has proven to be a huge
success with attendance growing each year. If you
have not seen the musical talent of the school
and the musical community in full flight as yet,
then this is a great introduction. It is a very casual
event where families and friends book tables
and enjoy entertainment from our youngest
musical talent through to our Middle School. We
would love to see everyone there to support the
hard work of all our students and music staff in
presenting this event, but more importantly to
have a great time.
Presentation Ball 2011
After many months and hours of organising,
practising and dedicated commitment, the
Presentation Ball will take place next weekend,
Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September at the
Centre Ivanhoe. 37 couples will be presented to
8 September 2011
the Mayor of Maroondah, Cr Tony Dib. A very
big thank you is extended to the Ball organisers;
Mrs Sharyn Frisby and Mrs Kylie Spears who have
spent many volunteer hours, days and months
selflessly organising and preparing this event to
be a truly ‘Enchanted Evening’. Congratulations
and best wishes to all the participants who
eagerly await their big night next Saturday and
Sunday.
New Families to Tintern Schools
The whole School community welcomes
Keira Vandenbroeck and her family into our
Community. Keira joined Mrs Kusters’ Year 1
Class. She joins her sister Emily (Year 3) who
joined Tintern last year. If you are in Keira’s year
group please take some time to make her and
her family welcome.
Fathers Day Stalls
A big thank you is extended to all volunteers
who helped with the Father’s Day stalls at both
Junior Schools. Special thanks to Nicole O’Hare
and Sue Jane for their professional organising
and planning of this successful activity. All Junior
School children were given the opportunity to
purchase a special gift for their Fathers and other
special males in their lives. It is always a delight
to watch the girls and boys take great pride
and care in choosing their special gifts and the
School Community is appreciative to the many
volunteers who provide this opportunity.
