Thanksgiving and Remembrancefor those Ministers who have diedVRVRThe Lord is hereHis Spirit is with usLet us bless the LordThanks be to GodHYMN: 1. Come, let us join our friends aboveThat have obtained the prize,And on the eagle wings of loveTo joys celestial rise:Let all the saints terrestrial sing,With those to glory gone; For all the servants of our King,In earth and heaven, are one.2. One family we dwell in him,One church, above, beneath,Though now divided by the stream,The narrow stream of death:One army of the living God,To his command we bow;Part of his host have crossed the flood,And part are crossing now.3. Ten thousand to their endless homeThis solemn moment fly;And we are to the margin come,And we expect to die;Ev’n now by faith we join our handsWith those that went before,And greet the blood-besprinkled bandsOn the eternal shore.4. Our spirits too shall quickly join,Like theirs with glory crowned,And shout to see our captain’s sign,To hear his trumpet sound.O that we now might grasp our guide!O that the word were given!Come, Lord of hosts, the waves divide,And land us all in heaven.Charles Wesley (1707-1788)4 Methodist Conference 2013

Thanksgiving and Remembrancefor those Ministers who have diedPRAYER:God and Father of all, we praise you for your infinite love in calling us tobe a holy people, a royal priesthood, a universal Church: and in givingus your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, to be the head of the Church and theshepherd of our souls. We thank you that by his death he has overcomedeath and, having ascended into heaven, has abundantly poured forthhis gifts: making some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip your people for the work of ministryand the building up of his body. We thank you that you called our sistersand brothers whom we now remember to the ministry of your Church. Inthanksgiving and joy we celebrate their ministry, through Jesus Christ ourLord. Amen.PSALM 23: 1. The Lord is my shepherd:therefore can I lack nothing.2. He will make me lie down in green pastures:and lead me beside still waters:3. He will refresh my soul:and guide me in right pathwaysfor his name’s sake.4. Though I walk through the valley of theshadow of death, I will fear no evil:for you are with me,your rod and your staff comfort me.5. You spread a table before mein the face of those who trouble me:you have anointed my head with oiland my cup will be full.6. Surely your goodness and loving-kindnesswill follow me all the days of my life:and I shall dwell in the houseof the Lord for ever.Glory to the Father and to the Son,and to the Holy Spirit:as it was in the beginning, is now,and shall be for ever. Amen.Methodist Conference 2013 5

Thanksgiving and Remembrancefor those Ministers who have diedLESSONS: 1 Corinthians 15:50-58Matthew 5: 1-12THE CALLING OF THE ROLLDuring which candles are lit in thanksgiving to God for the life and ministryof each ministerThe souls of the just are in God’s hand; no torment will touch them.In theeyes of the foolish they seemed to be dead; their departure was reckonedas defeat; and their going from us as disaster. But they are at peace.Wisdom 3: 1-3SILENCEHYMN: 1. Sing we the song of those who standAround the eternal throne,Of every kindred, clime, and land,A multitude unknown.2. Life’s poor distinctions vanish here;Today the young, the old,Our Saviour and his flock appear,One Shepherd and one fold.3. Worthy the Lamb for sinners slain,Cry the redeemed above,Blessing and honour to obtain,And everlasting love.4. Worthy the Lamb, on earth we sing,Who died our souls to save;Henceforth, O death, where is thy sting?Thy victory, O grave?5. Then, alleluia! Power and praiseTo God in Christ be given!May all who now this anthem raiseRenew the strain in heaven.James Montgomery (1771-1854)6 Methodist Conference 2013

Thanksgiving and Remembrancefor those Ministers who have diedPRAYER:Faithful God,you are ever with your people. In the storm, you provide rainbows,in the wilderness, pillars of cloud and fire, constant reminders of your presence amongst us.Through law and prophets,in the life, death and resurrection of your Son,you have continued to shape us,filling our hearts with loveand calling us into lives of service. We remember with thanksgivingthe ministries of those we name today.Calling them into ministry, you continually sustained them;loving them to the end,you have received them into your eternal glory and rest.Gracious God,in times of grief, your people call to you.In the depths of mourning, we look for comfort,in pain and loss, we seek your peace, signs of hope that you are still with us.We give you thanks for those who walk with us,sharing our journeys of joy and pain, partners together in lives of mission and service. In the midst of sadness and darkness may our trust be renewed that,in the shadow of death may we know the joy of resurrection.Faithful and gracious God,accept our prayers and praises.Send your Spirit upon the church, that we may continue to be equipped for worship and ministry.Keep us in your grace, that, knowing your presence in our lives,we shall be brought into the fullness of your glorywith all your saints in light.Through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen.Methodist Conference 2013 7

Thanksgiving and Remembrancefor those Ministers who have diedTHE LORD’S PRAYERSILENCEHYMN: 1. Give me the wings of faith to riseWithin the veil, and seeThe saints above, how great their joys,How bright their glories be.THE BLESSING:2. Once they were mourners here below,And poured out sighs and tears; They wrestled hard, as we do now,With sins and doubts and fears.3. I ask them whence their victory came; They, with united breath,Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,Their triumph to his death.4. They marked the footsteps that he trod;(His zeal inspired their breast)And, following their incarnate God,Possess the promised rest.5. Our glorious Leader claims our praiseFor his own pattern given; While the long cloud of witnessesShow the same path to heaven.Isaac Watts (1674-1748)May the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep,by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything goodthat you may do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ,to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.8 Methodist Conference 2013
