From the C.E.O. |Bruce D. Begley
At Methodist Hospital we talk about the importance of “work-life balance.” We
understand that in healthcare, an employee must be able to free their mind of
distractions in order to provide the best care for each patient. By creating a healthy
work environment and employee benefit packages with such needs in mind, we
enable our staff members to devote their heart, mind, and soul to delivering safe,
compassionate, high-quality patient care.
In recent years, Methodist has been recognized several times by the local Society for
Human Resource Management for our Health and Benefits Programs as well as our
Work Environment and Scheduling Programs at the Annual Diversity and Family
Friendly Practices Awards. While it’s an honor to receive such accolades, it is infinitely
more important to provide a work environment that consistently puts people first.
As you will read in this publication, the Methodist organization continues to embrace
our mission of improving the health status of the people in our communities
through a variety of ways. In Fiscal Year 2010, we contributed nearly $25 million to
the benefit of our residents. We treated 1,853 children through the CATCH Program
and 2,477 adults with chronic illnesses and limited financial resources in the Continuity
Care Clinic. We were honored with two more supply chain excellence awards and
helped 400 students complete their clinical training.
While we are proud of our many accomplishments and awards, we also know that
patients don’t heal themselves. Expensive machines can’t operate independently and
supplies won’t magically appear when needed. It takes people to make these things
happen. It takes a team of skilled, devoted caregivers to function as the eyes, ears,
hands, and hearts of the patients we’re trying to heal.
So, in honor and recognition of the thousands of hospital family members who have
devoted their lives to healing and helping others, we dedicate this publication.
Methodist Hospital would not be the compassionate, generous, mission-based
organization it is today without the ongoing support of our family. To put it simply,
we couldn’t have done it without you.
Methodist Hospital takes great pride in serving
the residents of this community. While we consider
Henderson, Union, and Webster Counties
to be our primary service area, we gladly care for
our neighbors in Western Kentucky, Southern
Indiana and beyond.
In fact, during FY 2010, we treated patients from
61 counties in Kentucky, 31 counties in Indiana,
as well as patients from 38 different states and
the District of Columbia.
These figures are based on MS-DRGs performed at
Methodist Hospital and Methodist Hospital Union
Methodist Hospital | Taking Responsibility
The CATCH Program
As the community’s healthcare provider, it is our responsibility to seek out the most vulnerable
among us and ensure that they, too, receive basic medical services. In 1994, Methodist Hospital
created the CATCH program as a response to the need for greater access to primary care by children
in poverty. Through no fault of their own, these children could not afford or otherwise access
a doctor for basic medical needs such as immunizations, school physicals, and well-child check-ups.
Now, nearly two decades later, the CATCH Program has treated 16,619 children. In FY 2010 alone,
the CATCH staff cared for 1,853 children at a cost to the Methodist organization of over $370,000.
The need for primary care will not diminish any time soon, and thanks to strong partnerships with
the Henderson County School System, the Henderson Housing Authority, and the Salvation
Army, the CATCH Program is poised to continue living the mission of safe, high quality care that
seeks to improve the health status of those in our community for many years to come.
Controlling Supply Expenses
In 2010, Methodist Hospital and Methodist Hospital Union County were among 27 hospitals in the
2,300-member Premier healthcare alliance to win a Supply Chain Excellence Award. This award
recognizes hospitals who excel in the management of supplies, thus maximizing ordering, usage,
and distribution of everything from patient gowns to surgical instruments, and contributing to
financial success within the organization.
Methodist Hospital received the first-ever supply chain award at the 2007 conference and was
recognized again in 2008. This was the first recognition for Methodist Hospital Union County.
Chief Operating Officer Wayne Meriwether says, “Methodist Hospital received these awards due to
the hard work and dedication of hundreds of our employees across several departments. This award
was truly a team effort to provide quality health care at the lowest price possible.”
The CATCH
Program operates under
the direction of Medical
Director and pediatrician,
Dr. John Jenkins; Nurses
Stephanie Hagan and Lori
Caldwell; and Administrative
Clerk, Dee
Our dancing robot
video was a hit on the
Internet. Check it out on
Our robotics team: L to R: Misti Wedding, Sherri Jenkins,
Dr. Fellows, and Cindy Reynolds.
Advanced Stroke Care Close to Home (right)
Even though Dr. Lee Newberry, Medical Director of the Methodist Emergency Department, and Dr.
Kerri Remmel, M.D., Stroke Neurologist, University of Louisville Stroke Center, are physically miles apart,
they can work together to quickly assess and diagnose patients with stroke symptoms. The instrument
that enables the pair (and other physicians) to collaborate, is the Remote Presence Robot or RP-7.
When our physicians need counsel on a patient with stroke symptoms, they place a call to a physician at
the Stroke Center of the University of Louisville Hospital. At that time, the U of L physician “beams in”
to the robot and communicates with the patient, physician, or other caregiver in the Methodist ER
through the use of video cameras and microphones attached to the robot. In most cases, the patient will
receive medication, undergo treatment, and recover without ever having to leave Methodist Hospital.
Which is great, because when it comes to stroke, time saved is really brain saved.
Innovative Therapies to Save Your Life (far right)
Ginny Powers never imagined that she would have a massive heart attack at her desk let alone that the
treatment used to save her life would involve an ice blanket. That’s right, Ginny was purposely “frozen”
as part of a new treatment called Therapeutic Hypothermia. It is the process of applying ice and other
coolants to moderately lower a patient’s body temperature by about six degrees for a 24-hour period.
This procedure protects the brain from some damage by slowing the body’s metabolism and avoiding
the additional trauma of a rapid restoration of blood flow to the brain. It is used for patients whose
hearts have stopped beating and then been restarted by manual CPR, electric current, or medication.

You
We couldn’t have done it without
In the past, surgical options for women needing a hysterectomy or men needing prostate
removal brought unpleasant and very painful side effects such as heavy bleeding, 8-10 inch scars
on the abdomen, loss of urinary continence and sexual function, and months of recovery.
However, with the advancement of robotic technology, surgeons can now perform the same
procedures as before but in a more precise and less invasive way.
In January 2010, Methodist Hospital purchased the da Vinci Surgical System, a sophisticated
robotic platform designed to enable complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach. This
system allows our surgeons to elevate the level of care provided to our patients by giving them
the most advanced tools available.
Chief of the Medical Staff at Methodist Hospital and da Vinci trained surgeon Dr. James Fellows
says, “Robotics is the future of surgery. It is the gold standard for care in my field of Urology and
applications to other fields, such as Gynecology and General Surgery, are being developed at a
rapid pace. Providing patients with the best outcome is our goal, and the da Vinci system is
helping us do that.”
Methodist Hospital |Our Families
Sisters of Song (right)
Lisa Smithhart Hope (Administration) and Mei Mei Smithhart Eblen (Continuity Care Clinic)
couldn’t imagine a life without music. Their father, Les Smithhart, Their father, Les Smithhart,
was a well-known local violin maker, fiddle player, and band leader of the Super X Cowboys.
The girls grew up surrounded by music and over the years have graciously shared their musical
talents with others. It’s no wonder then, that this pair of sisters was inspired to provide healing
through song with creation of the Methodist Hospital Music Ministry. Every Thursday, Lisa and
Mei Mei (and a few of their co-workers) travel through the hospital and sing to our patients.
They even completed volunteer training for St. Anthony’s Hospice and sing for the patients in
the Lucy Smith King Care Center. We are so thankful to these ladies for filling the corridors with
song and providing such comfort to our patients, visitors, employees, and family members.
The Williams Family (far right)
Steve and Marcia Williams have been married 35 years and have spent nearly that same number of
years in service to Methodist Hospital. Marcia began her career with Methodist in 1974, as an E.R.
clerk but was moved to the switchboard just three days later due to unexpected staffing shortages
there. About 14 months later, Marcia was transferred to Medical Records. After a few years
off to stay home with her children, Marcia returned to Methodist in 1989 as a clerk receptionist/
relief transcriptionist for Radiology. Now, some 20 years later, you can still find Marcia nestled
among the imaging equipment in that department. Marcia's husband, Steve, spent 25 years at
Accuride before joining Methodist Hospital's Facilities Management Department in the early
2000's. Over the past decade, Steve has had the opportunity to help refurbish, restore, and
replace parts of the hospital as we attempt to upgrade our facilities and infrastructure.

The Beck Family
Collectively, the Beck family has contributed nearly 150 years of service to Methodist Hospital. Patriarch
of the family, Bill Beck, came to work at Methodist Hospital as an orderlie in 1950 at the age of 18. Over the
next 39 years, Bill dedicated his time and talents to the Methodist organization helping to establish many of
the practices still in use today. At the time of his death in 1989, Bill had worked his way from orderlie to
Director of Materials Management.
Bill’s wife, Rubye, began her hospital career as a nurse aide. Once she completed nursing school, Rubye
served as a floor nurse and eventually the Manager of Outpatient Surgery. At the time of her retirement,
Rubye had spent 32 years in the Methodist family.
Bill and Rubye’s daughter, Angie Beck, got an early start in the healthcare field when she became a
Candy Striper at age 14. Some years later, she was hired as a Unit Secretary, completed nursing school,
worked in the ICU, transferred to Case Management, and moved all the way up to her current position,
Vice President of Quality. She will celebrate 35 years of employment this spring.
Bill’s sister, Scarlet Beck Herron, contributed another 39 years to Methodist Hospital. She worked as a
nurse, Supervisor of the Surgical Nursing Unit, and RN for the Education Department.
Bill and Rubye’s grandson, Todd Bowley, worked in Medical Records following graduation from high
school. Todd’s wife, Nickie, now serves as a GWEN Unit Secretary and his sister-in-law Lindsay Bowley
works as a nurse in the Endoscopy Department.
We are so grateful to the Beck family for their lifetime dedication to caring for our community. We really
couldn’t have done it without you.
Methodist Hospital | Our Families
The Donahue Family
Amid the cornfields of Union County, you will not find a more delightful, caring family than the
Donahues. Pat Donahue joined the Methodist organization in 1986, as Administrator of
Methodist Hospital Union County. He has created a warm, family centered environment at
MHUC and shines as a role model for living a life of service.
Pat’s oldest daughter, Tricia, works as an RN in our Women’s Pavilion. In addition to caring for
our new moms and babies, Tricia sings the national anthem for golf outings and other events as
well as helps organize our Perinatal Loss Memorial Service each year.
Pat’s middle child, Tami, spends her days in the Medical Records Department at MHUC where
she has been an integral part of the hospital’s transition to electronic medical records.
Pat’s third child and only son, Patrick, doesn’t currently work for a Methodist Hospital entity. He
did however, spend the summer of 19xx, as an intern in the hospital’s Administration Department.
We are so grateful to this family for their years of service and devotion to our organization
and our patients. We couldn’t provide such compassionate care without you.
You
We couldn’t have done it without

The Canlas Family
In the spring of 1976, a young Noel Canlas was traveling to Tampa, Florida, for a job interview
when he stopped by Henderson to visit a friend. He never left. Instead of heading further south,
Dr. Canlas spent the next 35 years caring for the people of our community as a gastroenterologist.
Just a few years ago, Dr. Canlas brought both of his daughters back to Henderson to set up their
own physician practices.
Dr. Karen Canlas joined her father as a gastroenterologist. She is the only female GI physician in
the region and conducts advanced GI procedures learned during her Fellowship at Duke University.
Dr. Judith Canlas uses her skills to help patients recover from illness and injury as a Physiatrist, or
doctor of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Judith serves as the Medical Director for the
Methodist Hospital Therapy Services Department and has created an extensive women’s physical
health program for the benefit of the ladies in our community.
We are so thankful that the Canlas’ have dedicated their skills to increasing the wellness level of
our citizens. We are a better organization and community thanks to them.
We are indebted to
the thousands of
Methodist hospital staff
and “family” members
who have dedicated their
lives to providing
compassionate care
to our community.
