In FY 2010, the Methodist organization exceeded the state benchmark for employee retention and turnover rates for the sixth year in a row. Methodist Hospital |Our Families Sisters of Song (right) Lisa Smithhart Hope (Administration) and Mei Mei Smithhart Eblen (Continuity Care Clinic) couldn’t imagine a life without music. Their father, Les Smithhart, Their father, Les Smithhart, was a well-known local violin maker, fiddle player, and band leader of the Super X Cowboys. The girls grew up surrounded by music and over the years have graciously shared their musical talents with others. It’s no wonder then, that this pair of sisters was inspired to provide healing through song with creation of the Methodist Hospital Music Ministry. Every Thursday, Lisa and Mei Mei (and a few of their co-workers) travel through the hospital and sing to our patients. They even completed volunteer training for St. Anthony’s Hospice and sing for the patients in the Lucy Smith King Care Center. We are so thankful to these ladies for filling the corridors with song and providing such comfort to our patients, visitors, employees, and family members. The Williams Family (far right) Steve and Marcia Williams have been married 35 years and have spent nearly that same number of years in service to Methodist Hospital. Marcia began her career with Methodist in 1974, as an E.R. clerk but was moved to the switchboard just three days later due to unexpected staffing shortages there. About 14 months later, Marcia was transferred to Medical Records. After a few years off to stay home with her children, Marcia returned to Methodist in 1989 as a clerk receptionist/ relief transcriptionist for Radiology. Now, some 20 years later, you can still find Marcia nestled among the imaging equipment in that department. Marcia's husband, Steve, spent 25 years at Accuride before joining Methodist Hospital's Facilities Management Department in the early 2000's. Over the past decade, Steve has had the opportunity to help refurbish, restore, and replace parts of the hospital as we attempt to upgrade our facilities and infrastructure.
You We couldn’t have done it without The Beck Family Collectively, the Beck family has contributed nearly 150 years of service to Methodist Hospital. Patriarch of the family, Bill Beck, came to work at Methodist Hospital as an orderlie in 1950 at the age of 18. Over the next 39 years, Bill dedicated his time and talents to the Methodist organization helping to establish many of the practices still in use today. At the time of his death in 1989, Bill had worked his way from orderlie to Director of Materials Management. Bill’s wife, Rubye, began her hospital career as a nurse aide. Once she completed nursing school, Rubye served as a floor nurse and eventually the Manager of Outpatient Surgery. At the time of her retirement, Rubye had spent 32 years in the Methodist family. Bill and Rubye’s daughter, Angie Beck, got an early start in the healthcare field when she became a Candy Striper at age 14. Some years later, she was hired as a Unit Secretary, completed nursing school, worked in the ICU, transferred to Case Management, and moved all the way up to her current position, Vice President of Quality. She will celebrate 35 years of employment this spring. Bill’s sister, Scarlet Beck Herron, contributed another 39 years to Methodist Hospital. She worked as a nurse, Supervisor of the Surgical Nursing Unit, and RN for the Education Department. Bill and Rubye’s grandson, Todd Bowley, worked in Medical Records following graduation from high school. Todd’s wife, Nickie, now serves as a GWEN Unit Secretary and his sister-in-law Lindsay Bowley works as a nurse in the Endoscopy Department.
