Mountain Currents
Alumni and friends are invited to join members of the Brevard College campus community for a special
Homecoming weekend on October 12-14, that will include the inauguration of Brevard College’s 13th president.
The weekend will begin with the formal inauguration ceremony for The Rev. Dr. David C. Joyce. It will include
delegates from colleges and universities across the country, and will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 12.
A campus-wide lunch will take place following the ceremony.
The inauguration celebration will kick off a special weekend of Homecoming fun. A number of activities are
planned to help alumni re-live old times and make new memories. Activities include the Golden Club Luncheon;
Distinguished Alumni & Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner; Reunion Class gatherings; student-led campus tours;
athletic competitions; alumni reunion games; and more.

Thank you Mason W. “Chip” Smith, III ’81,
President, for supporting Brevard College.
The hours are counting down to commencement (as I am writing this in the waning moments of the spring
semester…). The students have finished their exams, papers, and projects. Most have left campus for their summer
jobs or excursions. The soon-to-be graduates are finalizing their plans and preparing their regalia for the BIG event
that will take place in less than 48 hours. Faculty have turned in their grades and are wrapping up their end of
semester projects in anticipation of the BIG event as well. The campus is literally humming with activity as everyone
is preparing for the arrival of families and friends who are coming to celebrate the milestone that our soon-to-be
graduates have worked so hard to achieve: a diploma from one of North Carolina’s finest liberal arts colleges. It is
truly the highpoint of the academic year.
My wife, Lynne, and I have only been at Brevard College for five months. In that short period, the campus
community has provided a warm introduction to the college and to the wider community. The culture here is one of
an inviting and intimate learning environment. The college is serious about the charge to provide an engaging and
rigorous academic experience for our students. We recognize that learning takes place inside the classroom, but also
outside the classroom: in service to the community, in the residence halls, through internships, active research, and
through leadership opportunities. We also know that every activity, especially in the arts and athletics, enhances that
learning experience. This is an exciting and energetic place to live, learn, and play. It is all part of the unique culture that exists at Brevard College.
We absolutely love it here.
Only two more days… then we will line up in our regalia and march in procession to Sir Edgar Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance to the commencement
stage in the Betty Neale Academic Quadrangle. Reflecting on our 159 years as an institution of higher education, I will address the graduates, charging
them to never stop learning. I will also challenge them to make a positive difference in the world. Finally, I will remind them that alma mater is Latin for
“foster mother,” saying:
“Brevard College is your foster mother. She has cared for you, nurtured you, and pushed you. She truly loves you. Don’t forget her. Write often and
tell her of your adventures, your milestones, and your successes. She is proud of you and prays for your safety. Oh yes, don’t forget to visit!”
Commencement is the climax to a compelling story. But the story does not end when the
graduates file out. It is only the beginning. The graduates have a bright and productive future
ahead of them, as does Brevard College.
Our college’s story continues. We want you to visit your “foster mother” as well. Come
and help us write the next chapter of the story.

Remembering Marion Craig Nifong Clarke:
Loyal Friend and Supporter
Brevard College recently lost Marion Craig Nifong Clarke, a long time loyal friend and supporter.
Mrs. Clarke, who passed away on February 17, just 41 days shy of her 95th birthday, served as a Brevard
College Trustee member from 1965 to 2005. Her support of Brevard College went beyond her service as a Trustee.
She generously gave gifts, primarily in support of student scholarships and classroom technology.
“Marion was one of the kindest, most interesting and generous ladies that I have ever had the good fortune of
knowing,” said Vice President for Advancement Susan Cothern. “She was a tiny force of a woman who, while
well known for the smile that was ever-present on her face, was also known to stand strong and advocate for those
beliefs that she held dear. Some of her most closely held passions included Christian Education, women’s rights
advocacy, and education about and protection of the environment.”
A native of Anson County, Mrs. Clarke’s home was in Wadesboro, N.C., where she was also an active member
of First United Methodist Church.
A group of seniors enjoy a few moments on the lawn of
Green Hall before attending the College’s Baccalaureate &
Hooding Ceremony. Earlier this semester, the College purchased
adirondack-style chairs and placed them throughout campus.

Brevard College’s campus is beautiful in the spring. The flowers are blooming at every turn and as spring breezes blow through campus, you can see
the cherry blossoms dance to the ground. As another academic year comes to a close, many seniors are making decisions about what to do after they
graduate. Last year, Class of 2011 alumnus, Cole Altizer was making a similar decision.
“When I started my journey at Brevard College, I did not realize what lay ahead. I knew I would receive an excellent
education but I did not realize how my entire life would change. By the end of my four years at Brevard, I had not only
received a world-class Liberal Arts education, I had been captain of the tennis team all four years, studied abroad in Costa
Rica, received the “Senior of the Year” award, accepted a job offer as the Director of Residence Life at Brevard College
and most importantly, I met my beautiful wife, Lindsay. None of this would have been possible without scholarship aid
from the alumni and friends of Brevard College. As you consider helping Brevard, please realize that you are not just
helping a college, you are changing someone’s life! Thank you for all that you do and have done to make Brevard College
so much more than just an education!”

Brevard College is nearing its 160th anniversary. In anticipation of this milestone, the College is
planning to publish a history of the college. Dr. Brian M. du Toit, a published historian, has graciously
offered to research and prepare a manuscript for publication.

IWIL Celebrates First Graduating Class
The Institute for Women in Leadership (IWIL) recently held its 2012 Closing Celebration. During
this event, seven of the 28 women received graduation cords and special recognition as the first group of
IWIL graduates since the beginning of the Program in 2008. The theme of “Giving Back” was completed
with centerpieces of items to be donated to the local nonprofit groups, including the Bread of Life, Free
Rein, the Humane Society, and Friends for Life. A $250 check was given to Free Rein Therapeutic
Riding Center as part of a project directed by the returning IWIL women to complete service work
provided to the Center.
IWIL continues to be an on campus group of strong women who focus on collaboration, character,
community and service.
Professor Receives Fulbright Scholar
Grant to Teach in Finland
Assistant Professor of Religious
Studies Ben Zeller has received a
Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and
research at Åbo Akademi University
in Turku, Finland. This fall, Zeller will
collaborate with Finnish colleagues to
study the revival of religion in Finland,
and participate in the Post-Secular Culture
and a Changing Religious Landscape in
Finland project. He will also teach a class
on American religions at Åbo Akademi
University, and lecture on American religion and new religions at several
Nordic universities. A Brevard College faculty member since 2007, Zeller
teaches and researches the history of religion in the United States, and
the lived experiences of those religions’ adherents. He has researched
new religious movements as well as Asian religions, and teaches on
both topics. Zeller is one of approximately 1,200 U.S. faculty and
professionals who will participate in the Fulbright Program this year.

Exemplary Teaching

Experiential Education Robert
Dye was recently named the
2012-2013 Brevard College
recipient of the United Methodist
Church Award for Exemplary
Teaching. A Brevard College
faculty member since 1999,
Dye most enjoys teaching
outdoor living skills, whitewater
canoeing, coastal kayaking and
risk management for the outdoor professional. He has more than 25 years
of experience leading river and lake expeditions, including two Brevard
College Voice of the Rivers (VOR) expeditions. His first, in 2001, was
a semester long trip down the Rio Santa Cruz, Rio Limay and Rio Negro
rivers in Patagonia, Argentina. In 2009, he co-led his second VOR, which
followed the Catawba-Wateree watershed near Linville Gorge, N.C to
the Atlantic Ocean in Charleston, S.C. The award is presented annually
to recognize excellence in teaching; civility and concern for students and
colleagues; commitment to value-centered education; and outstanding
service to students, the institution and the community.

Faculty Members Receive
Promotion and Tenure
Two faculty members were recently granted promotions by the
College’s Board of Trustees. Both Dr. Jubal Tiner and Stephen Wilson
were promoted to associate professor with tenure.
Dr. Jubal Tiner
Tiner, who joined Brevard College’s faculty
in 2006, teaches creative writing as well as film,
literature and composition classes. He is founder
and editor of Pisgah Review, a national literary
journal associated with Brevard College. He is
also the current Learning In Community (LINC)
coordinator and advisor for the College’s Student
Literary and Arts journal, Chiaroscuro. Tiner writes
and publishes primarily fiction, recently placing
three stories in the Press 53 Spotlight Anthology.
His collection of stories, The Waterhouse, was a
finalist for the James Jones First Novel Fellowship
and will be published by Press 53 this fall. Tiner holds bachelor degrees in
English and chemistry from Southwestern College in Kansas as well as a
master’s degree in English (Creative Writing) from Iowa State University.
He earned his doctorate in English (Fictional Rhetoric and 20th century
American literature) from Oklahoma State University.
Stephen Wilson
Wilson, who joined the Brevard College faculty
in 2006, teaches jazz studies and applied brass.
He is also the director of the College’s Pep Band.
Wilson has an extensive career as a professional
trombonist, including appearances with Frank
Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr. and
many others as lead/solo trombonist at Harrah’s
Lake Tahoe resort casino. He has performed with
national touring companies of A Chorus Line,
Annie Get Your Gun, 42nd Street, The Producers,
Young Frankenstein and Chicago. Wilson has also
served as a clinician and soloist at workshops and
festivals around the country, including recent solo performances at the
International Trombone Festival, the Eastern Trombone Workshop, and
the North Carolina Trombone Festival. He has performed with numerous
chamber groups and orchestras in the Southeast. He currently performs
with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra (GSO) and is the front man for
the GSO Jazz Quartet. Wilson earned his bachelor’s degree in music from
California State University-Hayward and his master’s degree in music
from the University of South Carolina.

Join BC’s Summer Geological Field Trip
to Iceland: July 5-28
Brevard College Geology Professor
Dr. Jim Reynolds will lead a group from
Brevard College on a 23-day camping
trip to Iceland July 5-28.
The group will travel to most of
the classic geological sites, including
several areas along the mid-ocean rift,
Laki volcano; Eyjafjallajökull volcano;
Krafla and Askja calderas; numerous
famous waterfalls; Thingvellir, Geysir,
Vatnajökull national parks; Jökulsárlón
iceberg lagoon; the Blue Lagoon; and
many others.
This will be the sixth trip Reynolds
has led to Iceland.
“Every time I go I fall more in love with the place,” said Reynolds.
“July is, by far, the best month to travel in Iceland. The temperatures are
usually in the high 60s or low 70s and there is plenty of daylight.”

Tibetan Buddhist Monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastic
University in Karnataka, India recently created an interfaith sacred sand
mandala at Brevard College’s Porter Center for Performing Arts. Over a
three-day period, the monks painstakingly arranged grains of colored sand
into the form of a mandala, which included symbols familiar to religions
such as Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism and Islam as well as depicted the

Brevard College had six teams make the postseason in the spring.
Men’s and women’s golf; women’s tennis; baseball; and softball all
competed in 2012 Food Lion SAC Tournaments. The Tornados cycling
team also made it to the postseason, competing in the 2012 USA Cycling
Collegiate Road National Championships in Ogden, Utah.
Highlights for the Tornados from the spring season include:
• Sam MacNeil (Men’s Tennis) was the first BC athlete to earn South
Atlantic Conference Player of the Year honors.
• Kim Koivu (Men’s Golf) and Chad Funkhouser (Baseball) earned
Conference Freshman of the Year accolades.
• Claire Dillman (Women’s Tennis) and Brittany Fowler (Softball)
earned All-Conference First Team selections.
• The Cycling team also finished 18th among the 45 schools that
competed in the National Championships to end the spring year.
New Men’s Head Basketball Coach Named
We are excited to announce Lee Burgess as
Brevard College’s new Men’s Head Basketball
Coach.
Burgess comes to the Tornados from Samford
University in Birmingham, Ala. While at Samford,
Burgess served as an assistant coach for nine
years and was responsible for scouting, on-court
coaching and recruiting.
During his time with the Samford Bulldogs, the
team recorded a winning record in league play four
times and advanced to the conference semifinals
three times, making it to the finals of the conference tournament in 2006.
Burgess has also coached at Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga. as well as
Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala.
• Authored Mountain Nature: A Seasonal Natural History of the Southern Appalachians, which gives a lively and
engaging account of the ecology of the area’s vibrant mountain region and explores the animals and plants of the
southern Appalachians.

Escape From Syria:
BC Student & Family Make the Difficult Decision to Leave the Country They Love

Karam received his bachelor’s degree in art in front of his family and
friends during Brevard College’s May Commencement Ceremony.
I kept hoping that it would not reach the point where my family and
I would have to end 20 years of living in Syria by evacuating. But, due
to the escalating unrest and the government’s violent crackdown on
protestors and rebels, my worst fears came true shortly after I finished my
final semester at Brevard College and returned home last December.
Even though I was risking my life returning, I decided to do so
anyway because I had a feeling it would be the last time I would see
my home located in the Syrian capital, Damascus. For those who are
not familiar with the Syrian political crisis, it has been ongoing for over
a year since mid March of 2011. It all began rather quietly in response
to the Arab Spring, a movement that sprouted throughout the Middle
East, beginning in Tunisia in December of 2010. Soon, other countries
such as Egypt, Libya, and Yemen followed with anti government protest
against corrupt and dictatorial governments, as people demanded long
overdue change and freedom. Despite violent and repressive responses
from these governments, countries like Tunisa and Egypt were successful
in overthrowing their tyrannical leaders. Although Syrians were at first
hesitant, they too decided to join in.
Throughout the course of the conflict in Syria, Damascus remained
strangely calm, partly because it is the nation’s core where the main
headquarters of the government are located but also because most
ordinary Damascene people were peaceful and did not want to get
involved with the chaos. But soon bombing and other attacks began to
sprout in Damascus last December. Shortly thereafter, my father lost
his job as director of an American Language Center (a position he had
for 20 years) when the American Embassy, which had worked in close
cooperation with his school, shut it down due to safety concerns about
the worsening security
situation in Syria. A

the U.S. Embassy in
Damascus also closed.
Soon, my mother sold
our apartment home,
where we had lived
peacefully for 15 years,
and we were given
three months notice to
vacate the premises. By
mid March, my family

left Syria to temporarily live in West
Palm Beach, Fla.
It has been a very heartbreaking
and depressing experience for us,
to have to leave our home in
Damascus and try to temporarily
live in an unfamiliar place with no
more income. Of course we are
now safe from the increasing
dangers in Syria, but still, leaving
one’s home is never easy. My father
has especially been devastated,
mainly because of losing his dream
job and the means of supporting the
family.
Fortunately for us, while we
were in Damascus, the neighborhood
where we were living in, was
situated well away from the day to
day conflicts seen in cities like Old Damascus Alley by Karam Boesharr
Homs and Daraa, and other than
a few occasions of hearing shooting off in the distance, we were not in
harm’s way. But we knew that the inner part of Damascus, which has
avoided most of the chaos, would eventually become more dangerous. In
fact, bomb attacks and gun fights between rebels and the Syrian army are
occurring in Damascus. These are strong signs that the danger is rapidly
getting closer to the capital.
Although, it has been tough for us leaving our long-time home, we are
actually among the more fortunate ones. Most Syrians, especially those
under fire from the army or in extreme danger, do not have the chance
to leave on a plane, as we did. Those who are not killed often end up as
refugees who are forced to flee in terror to another bordering country,
such as Turkey or Lebanon. My family was more fortunate as we had the
chance to preserve our essential possessions as well as our lives.
Even so, I am heartbroken to see how many of the less fortunate
civilians are suffering, especially those in the besieged cities and towns
across Syria. May God have mercy on those poor people who are suffering
the most.
I can only hope that one day, all this fighting and destruction will cease
and that I will be able to revisit the land where I spent my childhood.
I find it ironic that as soon as I finished college, I soon got the news
that we would have to leave Syria after my dad lost his job. It is as if fate
was waiting for me to finish college before this major change in my life
would happen. Although it is upsetting that my family was forced to leave
home, I am thankful that this situation did not happen during my final year
in college, because if it had, it would have been much harder and more of
a struggle for me to finish college. In fact, it could have made me lose all
motivation in completing my studies.
Finishing college was not only an end of an era of my college life, but
also my family life in Syria. I am already beginning to miss the days of
when I was still in college and had a home in Syria. The 4 ½ years I spent
at Brevard College proved to be the best years in life. I never realized
how much I would miss living in the comfortable environment of a small
school with friendly staff and students helping each other. I will always
remember my time at Brevard, especially as I try to adapt being in the
uncertain “real world”, as I am trying to decide what I want to do with
my life. Although I majored in graphic design, I actually enjoyed drawing
cartoons and comics for the school paper, The Clarion. So I am thinking
of pursuing a career in cartooning, but nothing is for certain yet.

Life of 85-year-old BC Grad a Uniquely American Story
Simply put, 85-year-old
Summerville, S.C. High
School Football Coach John
McKissick ’49, is an amazing
human being. He is a member
of the aptly-named Greatest
Generation, and his life has
played out as a uniquely
American story.
Let’s get the most recent
reason for recognizing
him out of the way first.

Super Bowl game between
the New York Giants and
the New England Patriots
in Indianapolis, Coach
McKissick was honored as the Don Shula NFL High School Coach
of the Year. At a televised banquet the night before, McKissick ’49,
the winningest football coach in American history at any level with an
astonishing 594 career victories, received a $10,000 cash award and a
$15,000 grant for his Summerville Green Wave football program.
“We had a great Super Bowl week,” McKissick said. “My wife and I got
first class treatment all the way. The game was a good one, and I have to
admit I was pulling for the Giants, so their win made the whole experience
even better.”
Coach McKissick was nominated for the prestigious award by the
NFL’s Carolina Panthers, and when he won it over two other finalists, the
team released this statement: “Coach McKissick’s legacy of leadership
during his long career is marked by a lifelong passion and commitment to
serve others. While his win total is unsurpassed, his true contribution to
our region and to the thousands of student-athletes he has inspired, cannot
be measured. He is a man who personifies the ideals of character, integrity,
achievement and leadership that the Shula award seeks to embody.”
John McKissick was born Sept. 26, 1926 in Greenwood, S.C. When
the Great Depression began to snuff out jobs and stifle the country, his
family moved to Kingstree, S.C., just a few miles north of Summerville. At
Kingstree High, he excelled at football, baseball and boxing. “What I really
wanted to do was wrestle,” he said, “but we didn’t have a wrestling team,
so that came later.” It was also in Kingstree that McKissick met his future
wife Joan.
Following high school graduation in the World War II year of 1943, he
enrolled at Clemson for a semester and a half. The half came about when

the long arm of Uncle Sam’s military draft reached out for him and he
suddenly found himself a member of the famed 82nd Airborne Division
at Ft. Benning, Ga. After basic infantry and airborne training, the unit was
assigned to Ft. Ord, Calif. and told to prepare to be deployed to the Pacific
Theater to fight the Japanese. The conventional wisdom of the time called
for an eventual invasion of the island of Japan, with American casualties
projected to be in the hundreds of thousands.
However, a little something called an Atomic Bomb was dropped on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in August, 1945, and suddenly all bets
were off. McKissick soon found himself out of the Army, and on his way
back to higher education, this time at a little Methodist Church affiliated
school called Brevard College. The ex-GI excelled at football, baseball
and, yes, wrestling while at BC. “I had great coaches at Brevard,” he said.
“They gave me the platform for my coaching career.” McKissick added
that his grandfather was a Methodist minister and that he very much
enjoyed the church’s connection to the college at the time.
After graduation from two-year Brevard in 1949, McKissick enrolled
at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. to complete his four years of
college work. He had coaching on his mind, and after graduation accepted
the job of head football coach at Clarkton, N.C. a few miles northwest of
Wilmington.
The Clarkton job only lasted a year, however, and the young coach and
his wife moved back to his native South Carolina, taking the coaching job
at Summerville in the fall of 1951. He and Joan have been there ever since.
The 2011 football campaign marked McKissick’s 60th year as head coach
of the Green Wave, another record unlikely to be matched any time soon.
“It was my heart’s desire, from as far back as I can remember, to be a
football coach and to work with young people,” McKissick said. “It’s been
fullfilling and rewarding. Nothing makes me
happier than to see gangly young kids mature
and grow into strong, dedicated young men
who go on to college or make other choices and
become successful professionals in whatever
field they choose. I’ve even had a few who
ended up in the NFL.”
Naturally, the question of retirement had to
come up. The 85-year-old’s ready answer was
this: “My health is good. Guess I have pretty
good genes. I’m looking forward to next season
and, like they say, just taking it one year at
a time.”

Alumni Advisory Board members held our spring meeting during the College’s
recent Commencement weekend. We would like to congratulate the Class of 2012
on their accomplishments. It was special to be a part of your weekend celebrations.
I know each of you will represent Brevard College well in all you do in life. I look
forward to the Class of 2012 joining fellow alumni in support of our college.
Your Alumni Advisory Board continues to work hard, and we have many events
and opportunities to be involved in on and off campus. Mark your calendars and
join me on Oct 12-14 as we celebrate Homecoming 2012 and the Inauguration of
President Joyce. We all know that there is no better place to be in the fall than in the
mountains.
We continue our many events and activities on campus for current students, faculty
and parents like Freshman Move-in Day, Donut Breaks on campus, exam packs,
faculty receptions, graduate receptions and many more.
As we expand and broaden our activities, we need your help to build a bigger better Alumni Association.

Student yearbooks, official college catalogs and student newspapers
from Brevard College and its predecessors are now available online
through a collaborative effort by Brevard College and the North Carolina
Digital Heritage Center.

includes yearbooks from Rutherford College (1930, The Foothills);
Weaver College (The Mountaineer, 1920-1933); and Brevard College
(The Pertelote, 1935-2003).
Catalogs from Brevard Institute are available from 1906-1933;
Rutherford College, 1900-1929; Weaver College, 1875-1933; and Brevard
College 1934-2011.
More than 850 issues of student-produced newspapers from Brevard
College as well as predecessor schools Weaver College and Rutherford
College can now be searched and browsed online. The papers range in
date from 1924 to 2011, and are a fantastic resource for studying student
life in a small mountain college throughout the 20th century.

Seniors Toasted at Newly Renovated President’s House
Members of Brevard College’s 2012 graduating class were invited to toast their accomplishments at the newly-renovated President’s House. The
students celebrated their upcoming graduation with yummy treats, including ice cream sundaes and s’mores over a fire pit outside in the back yard.
The College recently used a donor-initiated grant and private gift to fund a renovation and upgrade of the College’s President’s House. The grant was
accepted by the College since the President’s House will play a key role in the new president’s and subsequent administrations’ plans to host campus,
alumni, fundraising, community and other events that are critical to Brevard College’s success.
Although the house – which was built in 1957 – was structurally sound, it had significant needs due to age. The project focused on energy updates
as well as the home’s public space. The renovation, which expanded the approximately 3,210-square-foot home to 3,810 square-feet, also allowed the
College to make the home ADA accessible.
Construction also recently began on the new Student Plaza space between Myers Dining Hall and Moore Science Building. Work will continue this
summer to turn the area into a green space for both formal and informal gatherings.
VOR Follows North Carolina’s Cape Fear
Watershed to the Atlantic Ocean
This year’s Voice of the Rivers (VOR) team has begun its nearly
300-mile expedition that will follow the Cape Fear Watershed from its
northwest-most source at the headwaters down the Haw River and Cape
Fear River to Bald Head Island where the Cape Fear River meets the
Atlantic Ocean. You can follow along on the adventure as the team travels

“Love the Arts” Fine Arts Gala
Brevard College held its second
“Love the Arts” Fine Arts Gala
benefiting the College’s Fine Arts
programs. The benefit, sponsored and
hosted by the Brevard College Board
of Visitors with support from
the College’s Friends of Fine
Arts (FOFA), featured student
performances as well as an art
gallery exhibition. Guests also
had the opportunity to bid on
one-of-a-kind auction items.
BC Group Embarks on Inaugural 11-Day
Biking Expedition
A group of students and professors have embarked on the College’s firstever
Rails-to-Trails biking expedition. The College Bikes
Rails-to-Trails team began the 11-day, 400-mile biking trip on May 14.
The eight students and two faculty members are biking along the
Virginia Creeper and New River cycling trails in Virginia, and the
multi-state GAP and C&O Canal cycling trails connecting Pittsburg, Penn.
and Washington, D.C.
The trip offers students an opportunity for the interdisciplinary study of
multi-use recreational trails, outdoor education, leadership and community
economic development. The group is also meeting with local leaders
working to develop the Ecusta Trail; Rail-to-Trail developers in Virginia;
and with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in Washington, D.C. Meetings
with the legislative staffs of U.S. Congressman Heath Shuler, U.S. Senator
Kay Hagan and U.S. Senator Richard Burr are also planned.
Rides of 25 to 50 miles each day allow time for exploration and
discussion. The group is setting up camp each night, and will also stay in
a historic Lock House on the C&O Canal.
