H a b i t a t H o m e o w n e r s R e a l i z i ng Their Dreams Of Paying Off Their Mortgages
On July 2, 1994, Sedalia Lewis cut the ribbon across the
door of her newly-rehabbed Habitat home and held the
scissors joyfully in the air. Her realized dream of
homeownership had been a long time in coming.
Selected to be in the Habitat program in 1993, she had
faithfully invested her 330 hours of sweat equity
working alongside of other Habitat homeowners, staff
and volunteers in demolition, framing, insulating,
painting and finishing her two-story row home on
North Stricker Street. And now on this day, the ribbon
cut and keys in hand, she opened the door to her very
own home.
<strong>“I</strong>t felt wonderful to get my own home!” she
remembers today.
A little over 15 years later, Ms. Sedalia entered the
Habitat office on February 3, 2010 with a check in her
hand to pay her monthly mortgage payment…her
FINAL mortgage payment! She had paid off her 20year
0-interest mortgage in less than 16 years and would
never have to pay another mortgage payment!
This story will be frequently repeated for Sandtown
Habitat homeowner families as our affiliate approaches
the mark of 20 years since completing our first home.
When our work began in 1989, there were more than
1,000 vacant houses in our 72-square-block community
out of 4,200 housing units and a homeownership rate of
less than 20%. The median value of an owner-occupied
house was less than $20,000. Today Sandtown Habitat
has completed 275 homes, and other developers in
conjunction with the City of Baltimore and Enterprise
Community Partners have produced hundreds of
additional units for homeownership. The
homeownership rate has increased substantially, and
homes today in Sandtown consistently appraise for
more than $100,000. So for Sedalia Lewis, this means
that she owns a home in a revitalized neighborhood
with a value more than triple what she paid. <strong>“I</strong>t is so
nice to have this equity and to have no mortgage
payment,” she says.
The very first Sandtown Habitat homebuyer to pay
off her mortgage was Edna Smith. Ms. Edna moved
into her Stricker Street home in May of 1997 and
paid her final mortgage payment in December of
2006. Ms. Edna passed away in May of 2009, and
(Above) After just a little more than 15 years since her first payment,
Sedalia Lewis enters her home feeling great that she paid off her
mortgage two months ago! (Below) Sedalia Lewis works on her home
“ I D o n’ t O w e A ny t h i n g...” - continued from front page
she was able to leave her home to her family free and
clear.
Joann Fulton moved into her home with her two sons
in September of 1991. She paid off her home in
November of 2007. Reflecting back to 1991, she said
“My dedication was great! A lot of people came out to
celebrate with me. It felt like such a blessing! To rent
for so many years, never realizing that one day you will
be a homeowner.” And now she is living in a home that
she loves, and she owns it. <strong>“I</strong> don’t owe anything on my
house!”
Edna Smith was surrounded by family and love on the day of her
house dedication in May of 1997.
