nsmcPeopleof serious patient safety events one of the organizationalgoals—and has made significant investments in thisarea over the years,” explains Page. “We haveintroduced new technologies, such as CPOM andMAK, redesigned entire care units to improve patientsafety and engaged frontline staff in a wide variety ofprocess improvement projects.”Martha Page, RN, MSN, CPHQ, Director of Patient Safety“Healthcare is an error-intolerant industry,” says Martha Page, Director ofPatient Safety. “Even a seemingly minor error can lead to an adverseoutcome for a patient.” Her job—with the help of the entire performanceimprovement and patient safety team and staff from across theorganization—is to make sure that the necessary systems and processes are inplace to decrease the likelihood of errors occurring in the first place. It is ajob that requires input from patients, families, frontline staff and physicians,not to mention vision and leadership at the highest levels.“Senior leadership at <strong>NSMC</strong> has long recognized the importance ofpatient safety—evenmaking the eliminationAll of which is paying off. As a testament to thegood work being done by Page and others throughoutthe organization, <strong>NSMC</strong> was recently recognized as aleader in patient safety among hospitals across the nation by The Leapfrog Group, one of the most respectedhealthcare quality organizations in the country.“Over the past 15 years, there has been a huge change in how hospitals address patient safety issues,”says Page. “It used to be a blame game, focusing only on the individual directly behind the error andexpecting that hard work and vigilance was sufficient. Since the publication of the Institute of Medicine’sreport To Err is Human in 1999, the focus has been on redesigning processes to prevent human error fromreaching the patient while also holding individuals and hospitals accountable for adhering to accepted safepractices. This has definitely led to safer care and better outcomes.”Page has held her current position at <strong>NSMC</strong> since 2003 and has been involved in performanceimprovement and patient safety since 1994, previously working at several other area healthcareorganizations. A nurse practitioner by training, Page has also held positions at Massachusetts RehabilitationHospital (now Spaulding Hospital) and Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital (now SpauldingHospital <strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong>) among other organizations.Achievements“Over the past 15 years,there has been a hugechange in how hospitalsaddress patient safety[issues.”The following physicians were recognized with Department of Surgery Awards for Clinical Excellenceand Professionalism at a ceremony held this past June: Terence Doorly, M.D.; Noel DeFelippo, M.D.;Ira Evans, M.D.; Richard Goodenough, M.D.; and Mark LaSpina, D.O.Alessandro Biffi, M.D., a first-year resident at <strong>NSMC</strong>, won the Princeton Early Career Award on May 19.This award is given to outstanding early-career scientists.Alain Chaoui, M.D., of Family Medicine <strong>North</strong>, received the Committee Chair Service Award from theMassachusetts <strong>Medical</strong> Society this past May, an honor recognizing exceptional leadership and service tothe Society, the statewide professional association of physicians.Donald Perlman, M.D., was honored with the <strong>2012</strong> Hope Begins Here Award this past April, given by theBoston <strong>North</strong> Cancer Association. Dr. Perlman has spent his 57-year medical career specializing in breast andskin cancer and was honored for his longtime efforts in cancer treatment and prevention on the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong>.Tobacco-Free continued from page 1Under the new policy, any employeeobserved smoking on or off <strong>NSMC</strong> groundsduring paid or unpaid times will be subject tothe <strong>NSMC</strong> Corrective Action Policy. Thepolicy also requires <strong>NSMC</strong> managers to sendemployees home to change their clothing ifthey smell like smoke. Time away from workwill be unpaid unless the employee requests touse earned time.To support employees, <strong>NSMC</strong> is providinga variety of free and discounted programs.The Quit and Quit for Good program will beoffered on both Salem and Union campusesstarting in September for the cost of $112.Employees who successfully complete theprogram will be reimbursed.“We have an impressive 62 percent successrate with this program, which is 30 percenthigher than the national average forcomparable programs,” says smoking cessationcounselor Ellen Bennett, C.R.T., T.T.S.“During the eight sessions, participantsdiscover some of the reasons why they smokeand learn relaxation techniques, coping skillsand behavioral modification strategies. Thegroup format is designed to offer support,allowing participants to share theirexperiences.” Individual counseling sessionsare available upon request. Insurance coveragewould be reviewed at the time of the request.<strong>NSMC</strong> employees also receive a 20 percentdiscount on all health and wellness programs,including acupuncture, Reike and yoga.
