S U M M A R Y- B A S E D A C T I V I T I E S S U M M A R Y- B A S E D A C T I V I T I E S7 Correct the mistakes!9 DictoglossThis is an oral activity, so do not give the students any photocopies.Tell them you are going to read a summary, but with some mistakes. When they hear a mistake they should correct it.In the summary below there are 10 mistakes to read out, all writtenin italics. As a quick reminder to you, the correct version is given inbrackets.About eight (eighteen) months ago Kate and Mike Sullivan had anexciting adventure at school (sea) with their parents and their friendJulie (Carlos). They were on their dad’s new plane (boat) and one nightKate saw the ghost of a pirate (boy). Then their parents were indanger and they helped them get on (off) an old Spanish ghost ship, where Mike found a pirate treasure chest (map). He hid the map in hisdesk (room) and his parents knew (didn’t know) about it.Now their dad was planning another boat trip to the Farallon Islandsto study the plants (sea life) in the area. Kate, Mike and Carlos wereexcited because they wanted to look for the pirate treasure together.8 Rub outOn the board / the interactive whiteboard, copy a short paragraphfrom the summary.Gradually, rub out individual words and even two- and three-wordphrases. Begin by rubbing out some of the important content words. After each time you rub out some words get the whole class to readout the text, supplying the missing words from their memory.Eventually, when all the words on the board have been rubbed out, theclass will – amazingly! – remember all the text.Sit the students in groups of two to five. Tell them that you are goingto read out a summary twice, and that they may note down key wordsor short phrases. Read the text once at normal speed, pause for aminute, then read it again.Tell the students to work together in their groups and use their notesto write a text which is grammatically and lexically correct but whichdoesn’t have to be the same as the original: the aim of their writing isto produce a correct text, not to show they have perfect memories! Then students compare their written texts. Groups should try to pointout any errors in the texts of other groups. Finally, show or give the students the original text; ask them toidentify any differences with their own texts, and ask them if theythink the differences are important.10 Cut it downPut the students in groups of two to five. Make sure that each grouphas a copy of the summary and a red pen/highlighter or access tocomputer. Tell them that they must cut 15 words from the summary:their shortened version must still be grammatically correct. They canchange punctuation, but they mustn’t add any words. When they have finished, they should compare their shortenedversions. They should decide which are the best cuts, and why.Next, ask students to cut another 15 words of the summary, andproceed as above.© 2010 Black Cat Publishing© 2010 Black Cat Publishing78

S U M M A R Y- B A S E D A C T I V I T I E SS U M M A R Y- B A S E D A C T I V I T I E S7Correct the mistakes! This is an oral activity, so do not give the students any photocopies. Tellthem you are going to read a summary, but with some mistakes. Whenthey hear a mistake they should correct it.In the summary below there are 10 mistakes to read out, all written initalics. As a quick reminder to you, the correct version is given inbrackets.Mike opened the treasure chest and found a skeleton. Carlos lookedinside the skeleton’s jacket (hat) and found a piece of material (paper)with the word Robles on it. Suddenly rain (water) started coming into thecave and the three friends sent Kate (Lucky) to look for help. Some girls(men) on the beach helped them get out of the cave. The next day they explored the Hacienda Estrada and a cliff (cemetery). When they got to the old lighthouse at Twin Trees (Oaks) Point, Carlosremembered that the word Robles meant oak in Spanish. They lookedunder the oak trees and found a treasure chest (tombstone). The nextday they returned to the oak trees with some archaeologists (Mr and MrsSullivan). They dug under the tombstone and found another skeleton (thepirate treasure).8Rub out9On the board / the interactive whiteboard, copy a short paragraph fromthe summary.Gradually, rub out individual words and even two- and three-wordphrases. Begin by rubbing out some of the important content words. After each time you rub out some words get the whole class to read outthe text, supplying the missing words from their memory. Eventually, when all the words on the board have been rubbed out, the class will –amazingly! – remember all the text.DictoglossSit the students in groups of two to five. Tell them that you are going toread out a summary twice, and that they may note down key words orshort phrases. Read the text once at normal speed, pause for a minute, then read it again.Tell the students to work together in their groups and use their notes towrite a text which is grammatically and lexically correct but whichdoesn’t have to be the same as the original: the aim of their writing is toproduce a correct text, not to show they have perfect memories! Thenstudents compare their written texts. Groups should try to point out anyerrors in the texts of other groups. Finally, show or give the students the original text; ask them to identifyany differences with their own texts, and ask them if they think thedifferences are important.10 Cut it downPut the students in groups of two to five. Make sure that each group hasa copy of the summary and a red pen/highlighter or access to computer.Tell them that they must cut 15 words from the summary: theirshortened version must still be grammatically correct. They can changepunctuation, but they mustn’t add any words. When they have finished, they should compare their shortened versions. They should decide which are the best cuts, and why.Next, ask students to cut another 15 words of the summary, and proceedas above.© 2010 Black Cat Publishing© 2010 Black Cat Publishing2728

Make sure that each group hasa copy of the summary and a red pen or access to computer. Tell themthat they must add two details, which they must choose themselves, tothe summary. Tell them that the details they add can be words, phrasesor even sentences. Tell them they shouldn’t write fewer than five words, and that there is no upper limit, but they probably won’t need more thanabout 25 words. When they have finished, they should compare their versions. Theyshould decide which are the most interesting added details, and why.12 Rewrite itTell the students to rewrite the summary changing some of theinformation. They should use their imagination to add details – whichcan be words, phrases or sentences – and change some of the words andphrases that are already there.SUMMARYMike opened the treasure chest and found a skeleton.
