Dear Cannon Community, 

Last school year, our community came together to 

choose a new motto that, in a few simple words, could 

say everything about Cannon School. This annual report 

is a wonderful celebration of what that motto means 

to our school community. Our teachers go beyond to 

make this a truly unique place of learning. Our students 

go beyond in their enthusiasm for excellence. Our artists 

and athletes go beyond in pursuit of their passions. Our 

parents go beyond in building a foundation upon which 

all these things can happen. Our school leaders, with 

Head of School Matt Gossage at the helm, go beyond in 

their commitment to ensuring a fruitful future for 

Cannon School. 

Go Beyond does indeed say so much about this 

special place, but it cannot say everything. Two other 

words are needed to tell the whole story of Cannon 

School. Those two words are “thank you.” Thank you 

for the gifts honored in this annual report, or the gifts 

of your time and talent. We are so grateful for your 

generosity. Cannon School is a place where go beyond 

isn’t just a motto, it’s a commitment to exceed

Dear Cannon School Family, 

A willingness to give, support, serve, try, and work. 

As I reflect on the 2007-08 school year, I am most thankful 

for the willingness of the faculty, staff, parents, and volunteers 

to participate in so many meaningful ways to enhance the 

experience of each and every Cannon student. 

Our teachers in all three divisions willingly embraced the concept of “adaptive 

expertise” and taught toward the primary goal of preparing students for a world 

where unpredictability may be the norm. Our teachers’ commitment to their 

students forms the foundation for all that is great about Cannon. 

Throughout the year our capable staff demonstrated a willingness to do whatever 

was needed to support the education of our students. Our staff ’s dedication is the 

strength behind the scenes that makes our school such a special place. 

Our parents chose on a daily basis to form strong partnerships with the School to 

build the most important alliance for our children. The willingness on the part 

of the Cannon parent body to support the launching of the Parent Education 

Program encouraged all of us who work here. The selfless decisions our countless 

volunteers made to become involved in a parent organization, to help out in a 

classroom or office, or to speak to a prospective family about the School shaped the 

school year and strengthened our community. 

And, finally, the willingness of so many to give so generously to the Annual Fund 

and to the two capital projects, the track and Upper School addition, has literally 

facilitated a deepening of the teaching and learning at Cannon. 

I want to thank each and every one of you who gave something during the 2007-08 

school year toward the goal of supporting Cannon’s efforts to equip students to 

lead purposeful lives.

A love of learning is built one lesson at a time, each day in many 

ways. Cannon’s dedicated teachers demonstrate their commitment 

to engaging the minds of our students each time they develop 

innovative learning techniques. They show their commitment to 

our students each time they enrich our classrooms with new tools 

that make learning one-on-one and one-of-a-kind. 

Our students give in return a passion for discovery and an enthusiasm 

for adapting to each and every new challenge. They experience 

life-changing lessons that bring to light the talents within and 

inspire a lifelong love of learning. They, in then end, go beyond this 

supportive, nurturing community to take hold of the opportunities

At Cannon School, excellent facilities provide the atmosphere for taking learning to its highest level. thanks to you.

Two new campus enhancements ensure 

that our students will benefit from a personal 

and engaging educational experience for many 

years to come. 

A newly configured, modern track and field 

now accommodates Cannon’s growing athletics 

program, including our new football team. 

Just as importantly, it also gives every student 

a new place to exercise as part of Cannon’s 

physical education curriculum. The School, 

now a member of the prestigious Charlotte 

Independent Schools Athletic Association, will 

be able to host state track championships and 

regional invitational meets on a new eight-lane, 

rubberized track. 

Our Upper School students returned to 

campus in August 2008 to a new 18,000-sq. 

ft. addition to the Upper School building that 

added 18 new classrooms. Now, students 

benefit from dedicated quiet spaces for studying 

while every teacher has a classroom of their 

own in which they can plan and teach. Three 

newly renovated, state-of-the-art science labs 

are places of scientific discovery. 

The combined cost of the enhancements is 

$3.35 million, a majority of which was funded 

through charitable donations from Cannon 

School parents and friends. 

Cannon is a top school in the Charlotte area 

because of the generous commitment of our 

families and friends. It is the generosity of 

more than 40 families and friends that built the 

financial foundation upon which these worldclass 

facilities stand.

Cannon School’s beautiful 65-acre campus is home to many 

great academic, athletic, and arts facilities. Since its inception in 

1969, Cannon has depended on the generosity of parents, grandparents, 

alumni, and friends to help build and maintain the kind 

of facilities that help provide the very best educational experience

The Annual Fund 

Gifts to the Annual Fund empower the School to go 

beyond our operating budget to enrich each student’s educational 

experience. The Annual Fund supports technology, financial aid, 

classroom enhancements, competitive faculty salaries, a beautiful 

campus, modern facilities, and challenging curriculum programs for 

each and every Cannon student. 

So many in our community show their commitment to Cannon 

School by giving generously to the Annual Fund. It is our students 

who benefit most from that generosity. 

It is with our sincere appreciation that all of us in the

raising $469,136. 

• Trustees supported the 2007-08 Annual Fund with an 

average gift of $3,132 and accounted for 12% of the 

total giving. 

• Faculty and Staff supported the campaign with 100% 

participation raising over $20,000 toward the 

2007-08 Annual Fund. 

• Parent contributions accounted for 81% of the

2007 - 08 endowment Summaries and balances 

Throughout Cannon’s history, parents, alumni and 

friends of the School have established specific endowments, which 

represent funds that are invested for the long term. The goal is to 

build principal that can be invested to generate revenues that can 

support school needs of general quality-enhancing purposes. 

Endowments are vital to ensuring Cannon’s long term fulfillment 

of its mission. We are grateful to all who have generously made 

donations to these established endowments. 

General Endowment…$215,363 

The General Endowment provides the School with the financial 

flexibility to meet future challenges and take advantage of qualityenhancing 

opportunities that fall outside tuition and the operations 

budget. 

Kimbrough Family Fund For Teaching Excellence…$1,217,960 

The Kimbrough Family Fund for Teaching Excellence helps fund 

training programs for teachers, as well as supplements salaries to 

enable Cannon School to continually attract and retain the highest 

caliber faculty. 

Speedway Children’s Charities Endowment for Diversit y…$554,523 

The Speedway Children’s Charities Endowment for Diversity funds 

special scholarships for excellent students who have financial need 

and supports multicultural programs aimed to increase diversity 

awareness in the School community. 

Michael Gray, Jr. Scholarship…$692,804 

The Michael Gray, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is a full-tuition 

scholarship available to students who demonstrate strong 

character, academic dedication, and financial need. 

Excellence Fund…$132,043 

The Excellence Fund was established by the Board of Trustees to 

enable the School to be responsive to unforeseen opportunities that 

might not be planned for in the tuition-funded operating budget. 

Richard H. Snyder Fund…$507,653 

The Richard H. Snyder Fund empowers the School to make 

improvements that are not covered by tuition or the operating budget.

Leave a place better than you found it – 

Each September, our 10th graders live out this simple maxim for four days during 

their Outward Bound class trip with the hope that they carry the idea beyond their 

campsites in the woods into the communities they live in and serve. But to leave 

a place better than you found it is to also care for that place to begin with. Overwhelmingly, 

our parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, alumni, and friends demonstrated 

such care for Cannon during the 2007-08 school year. Cannon School is a better 

place this year because of the incredible generosity of the 742 people who made 

gifts to the School last year. Cannon is a better place today because of you. 

Your record-breaking contributions of more than $469,000 to the Annual Fund 

enriched professional development for our faculty and made engaged learning a 

reality. With almost $2 million in gifts and pledges for capital improvements of 

the track and field and Upper School, Cannon can better facilitate its physical 

education, athletic, and curricular programs. And with the long-term health of 

Cannon as a priority for many donors, contributions of more than $200,000 to 

the School’s endowment will have a lasting impact on the lives of our students. 

Charitable giving is a time-honored tradition at independent schools and your 

generosity enables Cannon to provide the very best educational experience possible 

for our students. We cannot thank you enough for the support of your time and 

treasure. Much as our teachers inspire our students to be curious and engaged 

learners, your continued commitment to Cannon inspires each of us who work
