BNorthstar RodsNORTHSTAR GLASS RODSNorthstar Borosilicate glass colors are saturated to prevent "boiling" and the tendency to dull in a reducingflame. The colors are vibrant and rich. They stand up to more heat and a variety of flame settings.Northstar colors can be worked uncased and easilypulled into stringers. Without fear of boiling and withminimal patience, these colors can be worked on thesurface without being remixed. Slowly and evenly heatingthe color with a gentle neutral flame is recommended. The 4 examples below show how some of the rods appear aftertorchworking, and how they appear when encased in clear glass.1547NS-04 1547NS-07 1547NS-24 1547NS-28Dark Multi Ruby Transparent Green Blue ExoticSPECIFICATIONSC.O.E. 33.2 (± 2.0)Compatible with Pyrex, Kimax & Duran GlassRod Length = 15 - 18"Diameter = 5 - 9mmAnnealing Temp. = Max. 1112°F (600°C)Suggested Annealing Temp. = 1050°F (565°C)Rod Count per lb. Blown Glass Ornament InstructionsBBLOWN GLASS ORNAMENTSfor Christmas or Year-round DecorationGlaskolben is the name for a pre-blown clear glass cylinder with ablow pipe end used for blowing glass balls or three dimensional shapes. It is the same product used throughout Europe for making Christmastree ornaments. The prefabricated cylinder saves the time consuming and tediousmethod of “pulling points” from a glass tube. Glaskolben is available intwo forms: Sealed End Cylinder and Dual Spike Cylinder. Each form isavailable with 1.0 or 1.5mm wall. The wall thickness governs themaximum blown form size.Glaskolben ornaments may be blown freehand into a ball or blown intoa mold for three dimensional shapes. Stock molds are available, however the glass artist can fabricate custom shapes. Typical stockmolds include: a Pine Cone, Fish, Strawberry and Santa Claus Head.An available Mold Clamp fits these molds.EQUIPMENTThe following is all that is needed to make attractive glass shapes withGlaskolben:1. A torch head for MAPP Gas use (the Hothead, Cat. No. 15613).2. A gas/oxygen torch such as the bushy flame capable Minor BenchBurner, Cat. No. 1602, could also be used. There are several othertypes of burners available.3. Optional—Mold Clamp and Molds, & Annealing Oven Cat. No. 15285.SUPPLIES1.Glaskolben. 2. Frit and Powders (Bullseye or Uroboros). Theseare available in an assortment of colors. 3. Ornament Caps and LoopSets. These are available in 10 or 17mm size and gold or silver color.COMPATIBILITYGlaskolben has a Coefficient of Expansion (C.O.E.) of “89” whichmakes it compatible with Uroboros and Bullseye “90” glass frit andpowders. Any other glass with a different C.O.E. will cause the finishedball or shape to fracture from stress.© 2006 Creative Craftsmen Co., Warrenville, IL 60555B29

BBlown Glass Ornament InstructionsGLASS BLOWING AN ORNAMENTBlowing an ornament with Glaskolben is easy. However, it takespractice to get the feel of the glass as it softens in the flame.TO STARTLight the torch and adjust the flame back from a sharp point. A broader flame isbetter. Select a Sealed End Cylinder and introduce it into the back of the flame,i.e. away from the torch. Rotate it as it is brought into the hotter area of the flame.Continue to rotate until the cylinder is glowing red and starts to reduce in sizeor collapse. However, do not let the neck end of the cylinder get as red or thecylinder will be hard to manipulate.Remove it from the flame, hold vertically, then give it a quick snap to alignthe cylinder. Blow steadily into the blowpipe end to a full ball, while rotating. (Seeillustration.) This is where you must “get the feel of the glass”. Overblowing cancause a blow out. The ball must be annealed at this point. See separateannealing instructions.ELONGATED BLOWN SHAPETo make an elongated shape, follow the same procedure as in blowing aball. Rotate the cylinder in the flame until it starts to glow a red color. Thenuse tweezers to pull the end as far as desired while blowing and rotating.Immediately put the ornament in an annealer.BLOWING INTO A MOLDPre-warm the mold in the flame. Prepare the cylinder in the flame as youdid in making a ball. As the cylinder softens, place it into the pre-warmed mold. With blowpipe in the mouth, blow hard to allow the hot glass to fillout against the mold walls. Open the mold and remove the molded shape.Immediately go to the annealing process. Mold blown ornaments are typicallypainted with Pebeo Vitrea 160 colors.ANNEALINGAnnealing is the process whereby we toughen brittle glass by heating and slowcooling. Each manufacturer’s glass may have a different annealing range. In thecase of Glaskolben, the annealing temperature is 950°F (510°C). There aredifferent methods of annealing:1. VermiculitePlacing a blown shape deep in a container of vermiculite warmed on a hot plate, serves well. However, care must be taken to be sure that the red glow has fadedbefore placing it in Vermiculite. Otherwise, it may stick to the glass.B30© 2006 Creative Craftsmen Co., Warrenville, IL 60555

Blown Glass Ornament InstructionsB2. Flame AnnealingMove the glass shape out of the hot area of the flame (blue color) and into theyellow range for 2 to 5 minutes to allow it to slowly cool and anneal.3. Kiln AnnealingThis is the most reliable method. The kiln control can be set for the desiredannealing temperature and run for twenty minutes or more. The amount of timeafter 20 minutes makes no difference. One cannot over anneal. Leave product inkiln to cool slowly.REMOVING THE BLOWPIPE ENDAfter the ornament has annealed, the blowpipe end can be removed. The bestmethod is using a Carbide Scoring Tool. With this tool in one hand and theornament in the other: press the sharp side of the carbide steel against theblowpipe neck and press the thumb of the same hand against the other side.Rotate the shape while scoring the neck. Still holding the ornament, tap theblowpipe end to break it off.An ornament cap can be placed on the ornament to finish it off. Don’t discard thecut-off neck! It may be decorated to make a stylized bell, etc.DECORATING THE BALLAs soon as you are comfortable with making a freehand ball, you may want tomake a colored ball. In foreign countries production ornaments are silveredinternally and surface colored with lacquers. Because silvering solutions arepoisonous and flammable, alternate methods are offered. One method is to paintthe surface with Vitrea 160 paints, designed specifically for glass. Once painted, they are “fixed” by placing in an oven and firing to 325°F. (See Pebeo Vitrea 160instructions.)Another method is to use colored frit or powders. Fill to approx. 1/5 of the cylinderor just beyond the bend. Rotate the Glaskolben in the same manner as with theglass ball. It will take a little longer to bring the ball to blowing temperature becauseof the added volume of melting frit. The result is worth the added time.A variation on the use of frit and powder is the method the production Europeanblowers use when they add sugary snow on the ornament. Place some frit orpowder in a wide flat bowl or saucer, marver (roll) the hot cylinder over the frit thenreheat the frit covered cylinder in the flame. (See photo.) Blow into shape.Stringers or Noodles (produced by Uroboros or Bullseye and available in 90C.O.E.) offer another form of surface decoration. Select one, and while rotating theHOT Glaskolben counterclockwise (turn away from you) in the flame, heat the tipof the stringer in the flame. Place it under the cylinder, attach it and then allow itto trail around the cylinder. The stringer may be burned off at the finished end. Thepoint of the stringer may also be applied to the ball at 90° to dimple the surface.© 2006 Creative Craftsmen Co., Warrenville, IL 60555B31

BBeadmaking InstructionsBEADMAKING: GETTING STARTEDSetting UpFind a well-lit, well-ventilated room. It is preferable to have a tile or concrete floor to avoid anyaccidental damage. Always wear safety or prescription glasses as eye protection. A metal worksurface is included with Beadmaking kit (Cat. No. 15951) for table surface protection. However,it should be placed on a heat resistant table surface such as tile, tile backer board or metal.Beadmaking KitMAPP gas is the preferred fuel source for this torch system. MAPP cylinders are typicallyyellow in color and found next to propane at hardware stores or MAPP retail stained glasssuppliers. Tighten the torch head on the cylinder making sure the valve is in the closedposition. Place the hose clamp around the cylinder and slip one side of the L bracket into thehose clamp. Position the L bracket directly in line with the torch head and tighten the hoseclamp on the cylinder. Fasten the L bracket to your table with the C clamp. Place your metalwork surface directly beneath the torch head.Arrange your supplies in a semi-circle around the edge of the work surface. Open and inspectthe air-dry release material (gray bottle). The consistency should be that of loose pancakebatter. Shake thoroughly. You may need to add water and shake periodically. This is the releaseagent for your stainless steel mandrel. It keeps the glass from sticking to the steel and resistsheat transmission up the steel mandrel.MAPP CylinderLighting the TorchA striker is not included with the kit because some people prefer using a fireplace or BBQbutane style lighter (often under $3.00 at a hardware store). Turn your torch on and use astriker or lighter to ignite the torch. You will notice that the flame has a center, darker blue flameapproximately 2-3" long. The tip or point of this part of the flame is the hottest and cleanestarea of the flame. Working closer to the torch creates a reduction atmosphere where the fuelis not fully burned. This causes the glass to turn slightly brown. Around that center flame is asheath of flame (image 1). The tip of the flame (approximately 10-15" from torch head) isconsidered the “back flame. Here you can anneal warm glass or dry the release on the mandrel.B32123Coating the MandrelBefore actually making beads, heat treat the steel mandrels by “browning” them in the flame(image 2), then place them on the fiber blanket to cool. This burns off any manufacturing oilsso that the release makes good contact. After cooling, coat the mandrels by plunging themstraight into the air-dry release jar and and allowing them to touch bottom. While at the bottomof the jar, give the mandrel a little twist and pull it straight out making sure not to scrape therelease off on the rim of the bottle. This technique should apply a thin, even coat of release onthe mandrel. Dry the release (turns light gray) by rotating in the back flame. Getting too closeto the flame will boil the water out of the mix and create pock marks that would cause the glassto stick to the mandrel. You can rest your arm/hand holding the mandrel but do not set the mandreldown as you may nick the coating.Melting GlassFirst it is important to use only glass that is compatible together. The Beadmakers Starter Kitincludes Italian Effetre glass with a Coefficient of Expansion (rating) of 104. There are twobeginning foundations related to the type of bead you intend to make. Seed beads (usually nogreater than 1/4" in diameter) are made by only working the tip (first 1/2") of the glass rod. Thisis first waved in and out of the flame in a rapid motion for approximately 10 seconds beforeholding in the flame. The glass will take 5-10 seconds from that point to melt. Re-warm thecoated mandrel in the flame prior to pulling the glass onto the mandrel. After warming, themandrel is held slightly under the flame and the molten tip of the glass is touched to themandrel (image 3). Rotate the mandrel away from you, thus pulling the hottest (bottom) glassonto the mandrel. The glass rod is held vertically and perpendicular to the mandrel while doingthis. If the glass stiffens (loses orange glow), stop rotation and heat the connection in the torchuntil you can proceed.© 2006 Creative Craftsmen Co., Warrenville, IL 60555

Beadmaking InstructionsB4 5 6 78 9 10 MarblesKeep about 1/4" separation between the bulk of the glass rod and the bead surface (image 4). Always rotate the mandrel away from you—itpulls molten glass on to it. Note: Rotating towards you allows the top (colder) portion to act as a plow. When you have the desired size, burnoff the glass bridge between the rod and bead in the torch. Continue smooth, even and level rotation of mandrel in the flame (images 5 & 6).Physics takes over at this time. Surface tension allows the formation of a round shape. The combination of gravity and centrifugal force withproper rotation will always make the mandrel round. Once your desired shape and size are achieved, continue rotating as you take it out of theheat. Allow the bead to cool enough to go into the fiber annealing blanket. Note that the red glow must be completely gone (outside and internalglow) prior to going into the blanket. A quick check with the bead under the table can give you a fairer reading on temperature. Cover bead andallow to cool naturally for approximately 45 minutes. DO NOT PEEK! As you insert additional beads/mandrels into the blanket, hold down theportion already containing beads so as not to expose them to a draft and shock the glass.Making Larger Beads3/8" and larger are best made by using a gather technique to accumulate glass on the mandrel. Rather than just heating the tip of the glassrod, warm and melt approximately 3/4" - 1" in from the end. As it melts ( image 7), the rod will bend down. Raise the rod out of the flamevertically, soft end up. This section will fold back onto itself. Continue this until you have 3-5 folds. Remember to warm in the back flame or wavefor 5-10 seconds in between. Place the center of this gather into the torch and heat until orange. All lines of distinction disappear and the glassbecomes an uneven molten glob. It takes practice and patience to rotate the glass rod, keeping the gather on top and preventing it from drippingoff. Continue rotating until the bead assumes a symmetrical, round shape. Continue to rotate as you slowly cool the bead.Decorating BeadsPreparation for decorating involves pulling stringers of different glass colors. The tip of the molten glass rod (removed from the flame) is graspedwith a pair of tweezers and pulled. The rate of pull is relative to how thick the stringer is. Faster—smaller, slower—thicker. These can be burnedoff the rod in the torch flame, air cooled on the blanket and stored for later decorating. When you have achieved the bead shape and are prepared to decorate, continue rotating out of the flame until the surface color changes andloses the glow from the surface. The surface is now firm enough to start adding additional colors. The glass rod or stringer is heated in the flameand the decorations are added out of the flame (image 8). Remember to continue to rotate the bead except when you are decorating. Give thebead a “walk in the park” by bringing it back into the flame every 5-10 seconds with several rotations. This keeps the bead above the shockrange. Shape change of a round bead is done at the full orange range. Then the bead can be marvered into a cylinder, flattened into a pendantor squared off into a cube (image 9). Raking also occurs at the full orange glow. Raking is done while the bead is rotating and the bottom halfof the bead is in the flame while the top half, plus the rake, is out of the flame (image 10).Other shapes can be achieved by pulling or flattening the round, hot bead. See additional images below. A top notch book for beadmaking is:Making Glass Beads by Cindy Jenkins (Cat. No. 71291). It demonstrates step-by-step techniques with hundreds of color photographs. TheBeadmakers Starter Kit (Cat. No. 15951) can also be used to make marbles, glass icicles and Glaskolben, glass blown ornaments.Raked “Feather” BeadFlattened, Cut LeafFlattened PendantCylinder BeadSquare Bead© 2006 Creative Craftsmen Co., Warrenville, IL 60555B33
