large field (8 acres) containing the cellar holefrom the old farm. There’s a small wet meadow,a vernal pool and frontage on Hurricane Brook. The Keene Conservation Commission decidedin protecting the property that it is best suitedfor wildlife management and biodiversity. Tothat end, the city will delay mowing the field toallow nesting birds to fledge.McKelvie conservation easement,Jaffrey18.2 acresLin McKelvie donated a conservation easementon her Frost Pond property in Jaffrey, N.H. Theland was once part of Camp Iroquois, whichclosed in the 1960s. The mostly forested propertyfeatures more than a quarter mile (1,800feet) of undeveloped shoreline on the pond, which accounts for nearly 16 percent of thepond’s total shoreline. An open meadow isbordered by young grey birch, aspen and whitepine and provides edge habitat. Thickets ofmountain laurel edge the pond here, and thereis evidence of beaver activity in the southeastcorner of the property where a small wetland isfed by a slow-moving stream.Shattuck Farm and Shattuck Forestconservation easements, Jaffrey73.17 and 22.13 acresThe easements on the Shattuck Farm in Jaffrey,N.H., protect more than a mile of undevelopedroad frontage, five hayfields (encompassingprime agricultural soils), 8 acres of wetlands and62 acres of woods. Two of the wetlands containlocally rare black gum trees. In the shadow ofMount Monadnock, the land is owned byDaniel C. Shattuck Jr. and Travis A. Shattuck. The farm was owned from 1771 until about 1955by Dan’s ancestors. Dan bought it back in 1966and has continued the farming and stewardshiptraditions of his ancestors: harvesting firewood, growing and selling hay as well as vegetables, fruit and eggs. The property also includes asugar maple grove and the old schoolhouse lotno. 4, with stone posts in the ground still markingthe boundaries.Carbee Farm conservationeasement, Greenfield69.9 acresSheldon and Beverly Carbee wanted to conservetheir Greenfield, N.H., land both as a way tohonor their family’s roots in the community andto protect the ecological and scenic values of theland. The upper pastures are split betweenhayfields and an active Christmas tree farm, while most of the property is forested (and sustainablymanaged for timber). Rand Brook, which borders the property, is a significantheadwater tributary to the Piscataquog River;protection of the brook greatly enhances thewetlands and groundwater of the entire watershed.A corridor along the stream limits timberharvesting and ensures that the stream is notdegraded by future land uses.Great Brook Farm conservationeasement, Walpole34.6 acresOwned and operated by the Graves family for251 years (and nine generations), Great BrookFarm is a cherished landmark in Walpole, N.H.It’s where locals pick up raw milk, maple syrupand ice cream. It’s a bonus that the property alsooffers prime agricultural soils and riparianwildlife habitat. The protected portion of theproperty is fairly typical of the New Hampshirecountryside in the Connecticut River Valley: ablend of woods, pastures and crop fields. GreatBrook flows through the heart of the property, and road frontage offers passersby a scenic lookat a working dairy farm. A popular snowmobiletrail crosses the property, and the easementensures that the public will have access to thetrail in season.

FINANCIALSA robust staff and core infrastructure were key in raising the money tobegin, let alone complete, the land protection projects described in thisannual report. But a sluggish economy and depressed philanthropy had animpact on the Monadnock Conservancy in 2012, though the numbersmay not reflect this at first glance. While contributions were strong for newconservation easement purchases, these were essentially pass-throughdollars — once the goal is reached, they’re spent on closing the deal.Reserve funds filled the gap for now, but this practice can’t continueindefinitely without us reducing capacity to protect more land today. To dootherwise, such as utilizing long-term stewardship and endowment fundsfor short-term needs, would compromise our capacity to steward anddefend land tomorrow. As a land trust with a sacred commitment to thefuture, this is a sacrifice we cannot make.Financial statements reflect the calendar year, January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012.USES OF FUNDSSOURCES OF INCOMEOutreach andcommunications(6%)MonadnockCommunityConservationPartnership(7%)Land managementand recreation(1%)Management andadministration(5%)Fundraising(9%)Withdrawls fromoperating reserves andrestricted funds(22%)Program servicerevenue(5%)Endowment andinvestments(4%)Land stewardship(6%)Land protection, new aquisitions 1 (52%)Land protection, operations (14%)Donations torestricted funds(8%)Donations for landacquisitions (37%)Annual Fund andmembership(24%)USES OF FUNDSLand protection, new acquisitions 1 $740,866Land protection, operations $201,981Monadnock Community Conservation Partnership $95,249Outreach and communications $94,068Land stewardship $80,767Land management and recreation $14,610Fundraising $130,399Management and administration $74,678Total expenses $ 1,432,618SOURCES OF INCOMEAnnual Fund and membership $337,562Program service revenue $66,052Endowment and investments $58,583Donations for land acquisitions $531,068Donations to restricted funds $121,612Withdrawls from operating reserves and restricted funds $317,741Total income $1,432,6181 Direct purchase costs of conservation easements.
