Scouting the Road AheadLast month while I was attending the BSA’s NationalBoard Meeting in Nashville, Robert Gates was installedas the 35th President of the Boy Scouts of America.Gates has had a distinguished career serving as theDirector of the CIA andSecretary of Defense, notto mention also being anEagle Scout from Kansas.During his commentsat the closing banquetGates remarked, “I cansay without hesitation thatmy memories of Scoutingare every bit as vivid andmeaningful as what camelater in my life. I believeevery child deserves anopportunity to experiencewhat Scouting offers.”When I heard this Ithought about that last sentence, “an opportunity to experiencewhat Scouting offers.” While I don’t believe ourstaff and the more than 15,000 registered leaders in theHeart of America Council can control what Scoutinglooks like in other cities around the country, I am veryconfident that we can provide a life changing experiencefor all Scouting youth in the Kansas City area.A recent example of the level of program and commitmentour council has to its members could be seenduring the Scouting 500 at Kansas Speedway. I couldnot be prouder of the staff and volunteers who gaveof their time and talents ensuring that the Scouting500 was more than just another camporee, or as I liketo say, “Not your father’s camporee.” All Scouts whoparticipated in the Scouting 500 had the adventureof a lifetime. Frankly, I doubt that most of the Scoutsin attendance had the time to experience or even seeall the activities that were in the infield. Making theScouting 500 a part of the council’s strategicplan, and then committing to hold this majorevent every four years was a bold step for ourExecutive Board. Like any good Scout, welearn by doing and we will take the lessonslearned from 2014 to make our 2018 eventeven bigger and better.I also wanted to share one of my favoritephotos from the event. It was sent to me by aScoutmaster whose son had just crossed overinto Boy Scouts. After Sundaymorning churchservices, thetroop packedup and wenthome. When the Scoutgot home he sat downon the couch and within5 minutes he was soundasleep. I imagine thatsomeday he will be tellinghis children about thetime he participated inthe Scouting 500 at theKansas Speedway!ADVENTURES IN SCOUTINGPublished February/March, April/May, June/July, August/September, October/November, December/January by the Heartof America Council, Boy Scouts of America.
