Crestapol ®Resin Systemsfor Pultrusion

CRESTAPOL is a very low viscosity,methacrylate-based thermosetting resin, developed for use in pultrusion in conjunction withhigh levels (up to 200phr) of alumina trihydrate(ATH) fire retardant filler to produce profiles withexcellent low smoke, low toxicity fire performance.CRESTAPOL 1212 and 1214 use standard initiatorsand additives associated with pultrusion, and canbe processed on standard pultrusion equipmentwithout modification.CRESTAPOL 1214 is a modified urethane acrylateresin which gives a high quality surface finish andvery low shrink. Crestapol 1214 has undergonerepated flexural, torsion, flammability and electricaltesting to a variety of British Standards (BS) andNational Coal Board (NCB) approvals, andEuropean and BS fire standards.Featuresn High reactivityOffering the potential for high linespeeds compared to other typicalthermosetting resins.n Mechanical performanceThe inherent “toughness”of thecured resin matrix results in profilesexhibiting excellent mechanicalperformance despite the presenceof high levels of filler.n PIGMENTABLE1212 is pigmentable and fullycompatible with polyesterpigment pastes. The following tables give typical properties of Crestapol1212 and 1214 when tested in accordance with BS2782.PropertyAppearanceMECHANICAL PROPERTIESPropertyMECHANICAL PROPERTIESOF PULTRUDED PROFILESPropertyLIQUID PROPERTIESUnit ofMeasurementResin cast sheet properties (nonreinforced)Unit ofMeasurementUnit ofMeasurementFully curedresin*Barcol hardness 43Deflection Temperature underload (1.80MPa)#o C 92Tensile strength MPa 64Tensile modulus GPa 2.7Elongation at break % 5.1* Curing schedule- 24 hrs@ 20 o C, 3 hrs @ 80 o C# Curing schedule- 24 hrs@ 20 o C, 5 hrs @ 80 o C C, 3 hrs @ 120 o CCrestapol1212Clear yellowishbrownViscosity @ 25 o C 4500 sec-1 Poise 0.7Density @ 25 o C gcm -3 1.07Volatile Content % 49Stability in the dark @ 20 o C months >6Crestapol 1212 filled withAlumina Trihydrate (175phr) 48%wt/wt glass (CFM/ roving/ CFM)PultrusionprofileTensile strength MPa 405Tensile modulus GPa 30.0Extension to break % 1.70Flexural strength MPa 490Flexural modulus GPa 17.5Liquid and Mechnical Properties of 1214 –Mechanical properties relate to pultruded profilesPropertyUnit ofMeasurementCrestapol1214Viscosity, ICI cone and plate Poise 1.4Density @ 25°C g/cm3 1.09Gel time,* 66°C - 88°C Mins 16Gel time,* 66°C - peak exotherm Mins 18Peak exotherm temperature °C 175Flexural modulus** GPa 49.1Flexural strength** MPa 1014Flexural extension to break** % 2.10* SPI gel test at 82°C, 2% Perkadox CH50X** Tested to BS7861-1:2007

Due to the inherent low viscosity of Crestapol Resinsup to 200 phr of ATH can be incorporated to achieve a range of stringentfire, smoke & toxic fume standards. For example, 170phr ATH canachieve M1, F0 to the French Epiradeatuer standards.Fire performance will also be dependent on glass content and profilethickness.
