This hatchery ismanaged by the Manistee CountySport fishing Association. The hatchery has been in need ofa backup generator to insure thesurvival of fingerlings when thereis a power shortage.Over the years your club hasdonated well in excess of $20,000to various projects.New Research BlowsAway MythsNew research conducted by theUSFWS station near Rogers Cityis blowing away many of themyths and concepts held bysalmon fisherman over the years. While primarily know for their sealamprey studies, the research thatis attracting all the attention is anew study using implanted microdevicesto track the depth andtemperature of salmon and laketrout. The Researchers first caughtsalmon North of Rogers City, surgically implanted them with themicro-devices, put two tags with800#s on them and released thefish. The first surprise was that the 4 of5 fish subsequently capturedagain by fisherman were caughtin rivers in Georgian Bay; notSwan Bay. Another was caughtin Wisconsin. However the most surprisingfindings were relative to thetracking of the depth and thetemperature of water that thesefish had been in.While I do not yet have the officialresults my observations of theraw data were startling. One of the questions we have allhad was “Where are the kings inthe Spring?” Many of us havespeculated that they were in theSouthern part of the lake andhadn’t migrated North. The data showed that kings canwinter in deep water. Several fishrecorded depths of 400 to 500feet down over the winter months.May showed a sharp rise to waterless than 100 feet. So maybethose fish were at your port butyou were fishing about 400 feettoo shallow?Another sample of data showedthat even during the summer, kings can make short termmigrations to very deep water. Some seemed to be in less than100 and then made a dailymigration to depths of 200 to 250feet of water; but not every day!So maybe that mark on yourgraph at 200 feet is a king! One of the more interestingfindings was of five fish that wereat about 54 degree water at 5 am.Some went deeper as the suncame up and others wentshallower. The amazing thingwas they were in order of sizewith the deepest fish being thelargest. Real? Of just “the roleof the dice?” Stay tuned.Bob Mitchell – El-Lin2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
