Head’s Comments“Education has beena key focus of ourDepartment for manyyears now.”Over this time, members of our department, throughtheir commitment and dedication, have excelled at thisendeavor and have made significant contributions to theeducational mission of the Department, the Faculty ofMedicine, and the University. These contributions havespanned a broad spectrum, ranging from undergraduateto graduate to post-graduate and continuing medicaleducation. In addition to striving to assure excellence ineducation, members of our department not only adapt tochanging situations, requirements, or opportunities butalso seek out new ways of delivering and disseminatingour educational programs.Consideration of selected educational programs revealsthe foundational excellence and evolving landscapeof these activities. A new initiative by medicalundergraduate students resulted in the formation of aPathology Student Interest Group. This group, whichhas been actively supported by our department andselected faculty members, provides a great opportunity toeducate medical students about pathology and laboratorymedicine and to encourage them to consider it as a careerchoice. A summative report of the BMLSc program inthis issue of the newsletter gives a wonderful perspectiveof its growth and the significant impact the programhas on its students. New activities (CanMeds lectureseries), changes in leadership (Neuropathology), and theimminent opening of the Ken Berry Reading Room atthe VGH campus are highlights of recent developmentsKen Berry Reading Room reception [Feb 9, 2011]Mrs. Sally Berry, Dr. Edward S. Johnson & Dr. Michael Allardin the post-graduate (residency) program. Our graduateprogram, one of the largest in the Faculty of Medicine, continues its legacy of success and will soon (finally) havea new geographic home. The emerging Pathology Education Centre, an overview ofwhich is presented in this issue of the newsletter, is a newdevelopment in our department that will have an impacton our programs and our people. Creating and establishingthis centre, which is intended to serve as a geographic andvirtual hub for educational activities and will be intimatelylinked to the David F. Hardwick Pathology LearningCentre, is critical to enhancing our educational programs byfacilitating and enabling the incubation and developmentof new ideas and dissemination of our programs locallyand around the province. Importantly, the centre willalso function to support our faculty province-wide. As anendeavor in its early formative phase, input from students, faculty, and staff has and will continue to be solicited andencouraged to ensure it meets the needs and expectations ofall and builds upon the proud history of accomplishmentsand incredible collection of talent in the area of educationin our Department.Michael F.
